My claim to fame was knowing Rick Fenn since 1974 when he and I were new transplants into East Jefferson HS. We were basically loners among the hundreds of others who had developed friendships from grade and middle school. Needless to say, as the new kids without a clique to include ourselves in, we bonded in what I feel has been a lifelong adventure of endless friendship. Hanging with Rick and his free-spirited personality opened doors for me to meet and befriend others who he had encountered and introduced me to. Soon, an ever expanding circle of friends allowed me to feel less introverted and more alive in my new surroundings. I smiled when I read a previous posting recalling his Duster as it was that same four wheeled rust bucket that we would roll around the streets of Metairie to shake off the curse of teenage boredom. We'd all gather at the apartment on Giuffrias and joke around with his Mom and Lori before heading out to only God knows where and share the times together like only really great friends do. Buddy, Steve, Mario and the rest of the Airline Park crew are just a few of the remarkable friends that I was introduced to by Rick's generosity. Bill, Roger, Terry can add themselves to the list of teen friends that share a great place in my aging mind as well. Sadly, whether it would be a change of job schedules, short leashes by demanding girlfriends, or a change of location that takes us further away from the friendship trail, we all began to float in different friend pools and would encounter one another less frequently. We used to hang at Obie's when it was still a one room hole in the wall years before Rick ruled the roost. Needless to say, I wasn't a bit surprised when I passed through its doors one night to find my friend of many years with a swarm of wide-eyed worshippers listening intently to his words of wisdom as if they were coming from the mouth of Christ himself. Rick was a magnetic character. By that I mean he attracted all varieties of people and would befriend some that others might actually shun. Rick wasn't always a big guy. But I suppose that his body had to expand to make room for his ever growing heart. Besides his joking manner and his way of making every life he touched that much more enjoyable...it's his loving heart that I will miss the most. I'm sad to learn of his untimely passing nearly six months after the fact. Truth is, I was just mentally reminiscing of happier times in my life and decided to Google search the names of friends that had influenced that. I'm truly sorry that I was no longer living in the area so as to attend any of the gatherings that reflected on the life and times of this great friend to all. But just reading the slew of postings on this site has caused me to feel that much more blessed to know Rick. To quote a popular song phrase..."I knew Jesus before he was a Superstar." May God be with you my Brother.

Rick you have been in my life since I was born. We just said a few weeks ago that we had at least 20 more years of dealing with each other. I remember that I told you I would always be happy to put up with you. We were kidding around, but I never thought that we wouldn't get the chance to grow old together. Thanks for showing my sister that a man, other than her father, can love her unconditionally. My heart aches. We miss you so much.

We meet when I was only 15 and you were one of my protectors all through my high school years. Even though the years have passed and I am now almost 50, the memories are still vivid in my mind. Especially the brown Duster that provide many wild rides. Even thou we did not get to see much of each other through the years, the bond of family was forever intrenched in us in those early years of our lives. The thing that will comfort me is that we had reconnect just recently (i believe it was God's way of letting us have that last moment together). My heart still aches with pain but I believe you are now somewhere peaceful hanging out with my mom I am sure. She was waiting for you to come home to her where she will watch over you until the rest of us join you. I will miss you my dear friend and brother. Your DPO Sister. Lori and Mama Joyce know you are always close to my heart. No matter the years or miles that keep us apart.

Rick, you were the first to smile. You were the first to laugh and make a joke so others could join in with you. Your joy was contagious and there will always be a void without you here. Hope you got the answer to all those "mysteries" when you got to Heaven.

Dear Joyce, My heart goes out to you. I didn't know Rick very well. Suffice that he is your son. It is such a painful journey that you never quite get over. Little by little you will begin remembering the joyful times you had with Rick and the pain will become more bearable. I hope you will allow yourself to grieve and get as much support as you need. There are many support groups out there with people like you and me to help you go through the process. You are not alone. Rick and Gary are in a better place and not suffering any more. It is just us who miss them who now feel the pain. Do take care. I am sorry that I cannot be there for you now. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers as is Rick. Edie

Rick man I miss you. He was a great, wonderful, kind friend to me. I leaned on him when I sad and he changed my sadness into laughter just by a few words or music. I will truly miss him everyday. He and I texted each other at least 3 to 4x a week just to chat or say hey how ya doin' and the Saint's game's I'd ask for his prediction for each game. When I wasn't out, he'd text me and say "where r u." I know he cared so much & always said he loved me just because and I loved him back. I never got to meet his mom Ms. Joyce but I know he truly loved his mom. He had a great heart for everyone. If anyone payed attention while he was DJ'n, he smiled & watch us all have a good time & act silly. He loved people and we loved him back. I don't know how my life will be without him but he will be alive in my heart especially when I hear music. My prayers and thoughts go out to his mom Ms. Joyce and his family through this difficult time. Rick man you are the best and I will miss my Rock. May peace be with his family and friends in the time of healing. RIP Rick, see you in heaven when I get there & save me a "professional." Love you.

I hate that I didn't get to hug you before you left and I am sorry that I cannot be there to send you off and celebrate your life with everybody but I will cherish our friendship forever. You were and always will be my "Ricky"! You always made me feel special and you were a great friend. I remember when I was moving to Memphis in 1994 and you and Leslie got on stage and sang She's got a ticket to ride for me the night before I left. Even now when I hear that song, it puts the biggest smile on my face, just as it did all those years ago! That's just the type of friend you were. Always making people smile with your kindness. I will never forget you and will love you ALWAYS!!! Rest in peace my dear friend....And as always MUAH!!!!

We were a close group of friends who eventually went our separate ways but have always held our friendships close to our hearts. The memories I/We have of you are dear to us. We will forever miss you Cuz. P.E.S.T. forever.

I pray for you and your family during this time, but I know you are in the presence of His love. God rest your soul!
Many lives that were touched by you will always hold you in our hearts.

You will be sadly missed, but never forgotten.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Rick, you were like a big brother to everyone including myself. You were my favorite bartender at OBies, and again at coachs. It didn't matter what kind of mood you were in, if you saw me walk in and others for that matter, you knew what song to play for us. Fridays will never be the same at coachs, you are missed my brother. I hope you rockin the heavens gates loose and saying cheers to all who enters with a shot of black plague. R.I.P. my friend, you are truly missed.
