Mr. Fisher was one of the four people who influenced me the most when I was growing up. He introduced me to Bob Dylan and thermodynamics . . . . what more can I say? The world will be a poorer place without him.
It was just one month ago today. Re-reading all of your kind words is a bit overwhelming. Thank you to friends and former students near and far for sharing your treasured memories. Lynn
My family and I are very sorry for your loss. I am glad I was able to meet Roger over the years... who can forget Roger and Lynn driving up to do the famous fish fries when Mark and I and others lived together in college. I also remember Roger walking thru my house in 2005 in the middle of massive renovations and him joking with me "Ron you're either really crazy or really brave to take this on!" I can tell from the entries of his students that he was a tremendous role model and mentor for many students over many years and his influence will live on. I consider myself fortunate to have met Roger.
- Ron Kim
I considered it an honor to be a student of Mr. Fisher. I admired him for his knowledge, leadership and compassion. He was fantastic teacher and an incredible person. He will be missed.
Nice turn out last night-not at all surprizing. He was proud of how his boys turned out. I owe my career in fish biology and 30-yr employment at Ohio State/Stone Lab to his Ichthyology class. He set me up with an internship my senior year with the OSU boss that I would have my entire career there, getting paid to play with fish and teach Lake Erie ecology. John Hageman, NHS Class of '77
like the wake spreading behind reflects the cut of the boat, these messages speak to the measure of the man. Roger's influence continues to spread exponentially, across generations. He is a big part of why so many of us find joy and wonder in the world around us. His wonder became our wonder. I owe much of what I know about the lakes and the rivers and the fish and the trees and the atoms and the galaxies to Roger. I understand my place in, my impact on and my responsibility to the environment because I had Roger as both teacher and friend. Fish on, Rog. May your bait box be full and your line ever taut. You live in all of us now.
Mr. Fisher was quite simply a "legend". A true educator who inspired me to also become an educator. I have so many fond memories of his Physics and Ecology classes at Northwood. He went above and beyond the curriculum to teach life lessons that are still with me 22 years later. My deepest condolences to his family...you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Chuck Jaco , Northwood ,1990
Mr. Fisher was my favorite teacher at NHS. He taught the hardest subjects in such a way that you got it. He demanded respect and you didn't dare mess around in his class. Every student should have a teacher like him in their lifetime to truly understand that a teacher can care for you and really "teach". You knew he loved what he was doing and had a real passion for it. I am so lucky to have had him! God Bless his family and may they be comforted in knowing how many people he touched in his lifetime. What a wonderful legacy!!!!!!
Stephanie (Bowman) Blazevich - Class of '89
Deepest condolences to the Fisher family. A great man will be missed. I feel lucky to have know Roger thru my father and thru his son Mark. He will be missed a great deal.
Our deepest sympathies go to the Fisher family. Roger was a good friend. He was always good at settling me down when I took basketball too seriously. Great guy that will be missed.
Mr. Fisher was an amazing educator that had a positive impact on so many, myself included.
I remember going to the family reunions at the Floods farm...he was always telling the most fascinating stories. I am sending prayers to comfort family...Roger ....say hi to my Dad in heaven.
God Bless and rest in peace Mr Fisher... He taught me algebra, chemistry and physics in high school. More importantly, he taught me to be a good and respectful student. I am grateful to have been his student at Northwood High School (Class of 1986). Mr. Fisher is one of the teachers who inspired my passion for working with youth and teaching.
As I read the notes of sympathy I am amazed that Mr. Fisher touched so many , so deeply. I saw my own son's message as he had him for a teacher 20 years after we had him. WOW, he left such a legacy of caring & being a wonderful teacher and person to hundreds of students who will miss him dearly.
This is just some of what was said on Facebook...

Marcia Ferguson Garvin Chemistry was the first subject that ever frustrated me - Mr. Fisher told me to stop doubting myself, that I knew this better than I thought. I aced my next test. I have heard that phrase, in his voice, in my head many times over the years. I hope he knew how much he touched his students' lives... Good man....

Sorry for your loss. Roger was a friend from East Toledo, where I grew up 2 blocks from the family grocery store. We played basketball at the East Toledo YMCA in the summertime. He was an inspiration to me then and still.
I am so sorry to hear of Roger's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Mr Fisher was a great science teacher. I had him for Chemistry and Ecology. He will be missed. Northwood Class of 1990
with sincere sympathy for your loss may you take comfort from the scripture
Sincere condolences to the family on this loss. Leaving such an indelible impression on hundreds of students is an achievement to be admired. Along with this, the numerous hobbies and passions he pursued throughout his life is inspiring to me, even now, years after leaving his classroom.
Lynn and family, Carolyn and I have fond memories getting together with you and Roger, at Sylvania basketball games, enjoying Roger s fish he seemed to always catch, Roger and me talking baseball or math, the get together at Sanabel Island and his search for a key lime pie for Carolyn s birthday., and the free refrigerator you gave us from your school which we still have in our basement that every time I open I think of both of you. May God bless you and your family. Gene and Carolyn Hodulik
Mr Fisher was a great teacher he made such a positive impact on so many people will be sadly missed RIP Mr Fisher Tamra Stickler Williams Class of 1983
I remember Roger and Lynn, before they married, when they were guards for the pool in Walbridge. My son, Sean DeLauder had him as a teach at Northwood, thanks Roger, you were great. He also taught our daughter, Mary Zsigray at West Side Montesorri. We were blessed at both schools by Roger. God be with you and all of your families. Until we meet again. Tony, Carla & Mary Zsigray. Sean DeLauder.
Such a legacy... "A hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in the bank...but the world may be a better place because I made a difference in the life of a child." - Forest Witcraft
Very special person loved his fish fries at school one of the good guys !!
Lynn and family,
So sorry for your loss. Fond memories of Roger and the kids.
Fisher Family, so sorry for your loss. Thinking of you and hoping that the days ahead will bring you peace and comfort.
So many memories I don't know where to start. He always volunteered as Dodgin' Rog the super Jock spinnin' tunes for the senior dance. He was awesome. Most memorable for me were field trips seining for fish and to OSU Stone LAB on Lake Erie for Ichthyology. He always said we would remember scientific names of some of the fish and I still do. It goes on and on. Through thousands of students.
RIP Mr. Fisher.
Every student throughout their academic career often has that one teacher who makes such a profound impact on them that it is never forgotten. Often the influence of this person is so great that their teachings and life lessons are referenced for many years. Roger Fisher was this person for a countless number of students who have passed through the halls of NHS. Your life, your legacy, your teaching and your influence will never be forgotten. Thanks for everything Mr. Fisher.
Roger was a very, very special person and we are the better for knowing him. He will be missed greatly by, not only his family and students, but a great many friends like us.
Mr. Fisher was an incredible teacher. His encouragement and advice were part of the reason I chose the career path that I did at the young age of 17. Science would never have been so appealing with anyone else! Thank you Mr. Fisher for your guidance...you made such an impression on so many lives.
Roger Fisher was definitely one of the best teachers I had. His influence has directed some of the choices I have made through out my life.
I'm so sorry to hear of Rogers passing. I grew up in the same neighborhood and he lived right behind me when he first was married. Always a pleasure to talk to, my parents thought the world of him too. Have many fond memories of Roger,Mary and their parents corner store.
Sorry to hear that Mr Fisher has passed. He was one of my favorite teachers. Northwood HS Class of 1975-1979
He was an older cousin of mine that I also looked up to.
So sad to hear of Mr. Fisher passing. I had him for Chemistry and although it is the only class I did not excel at he always pushed me to do my best knowing however it was probably hopeless. You were a good man Mr. Fisher. You will be sorely missed by generations to come who were not as lucky as me to have you as a teacher.
Mr. Fisher was the finest teacher I have ever known . Condolences to the family. Hope Raether Nevins, Class of 94
I've just learned of your passing and wish that I could have let you know how much you've influenced my life. I often reference your Ecology and Advanced Chemistry classes whenever asked what landed me in my current career. No other teacher has influenced me as much.
I'm pleasantly surprised to learn of your involvement with West Side Montessori. During my brief return to Toledo in 2005, I enrolled my boys into WSM. We loved our experience there. None of the Montessori schools here in Denver compare. I'm thinking you and WSM have a lot in common.
Lynn, I am so sorry to hear about Roger. He was truly a great man with his vast knowledge of all things "nature", as well as the other sciences, math and athletics. Roger's sharp sense of humor made him so likeable and he was very patient, as evidenced the day he tried to teach me to swim many years ago-- which he brought up at every school gathering! May God help your whole family through this difficult time.
Mr Fisher, you were truly one of the finest teachers I ever had. It was an honor and a privilege to have been in your classes. Your devotion to the natural world inspired us and taught us that it is our responsibility to take care of it.
Every time I see I Monarch butterfly, I think of you.
I am truly blessed to be part of the Fisher family. Roger was an incredible husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be deeply missed. But he left a wonderful legacy behind. I will miss you, Roger. Rest in peace.
Mrs. Fisher and family: All of these people have paid tribute to our teacher, coach, and friend to your husband, father, and grandfather. As HB Adams said, ‘A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.' Mr. Fisher was a great teacher who inspired all of us into the fields of Science and Mathematics. Yet, he never took himself too seriously when he would participate in Star Wars Skits and plays. He always wanted the best for his students and pushed them to succeed; when I graduated with my PhD, he asked me what was next and how would I help others. And for all that he did, he was most proud of your work and efforts at the West Side Montessori. Just know that Mr. Fisher may not have seen the fruit of a day's work but these tributes are testaments to his character, influence, and inspiration. My deepest condolences to you and your family. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Rest in peace Mr. Fisher.... You were one of my favorite teachers and made chemistry fun. I will never forget your humor and smile! I am so sorry I was never able to come and visit you, my loss. God Bless to your family. I know you will be truly missed.... Diane(Fleitz)Coy, NHS Class of 1970
We are so sorry for you loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.. Love Gail & Roy
Mr.Fisher was my Chemistry teacher my first year at Northwood, having just moved from the Waite district to Northwood in my sophomore year. I in no way wanted to take Chemistry but had to for science credit to graduate. I went into the class with the attitude "I'll do just enough to pass" Mr. Fisher in no way let me do "just enough to pass" he challenged me daily and by the end of the year I actually liked chemistry. He was a very well respected teacher. My sympathies to the Fisher family, God's peace & blessings be with you at this time.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. Never again will we look at a monarch butterfly the same :)
Mark & Nikki Meyers
Mr. Fisher was one of my favorite teachers @ NHS and really challenged me to work hard in his classes. Even when Mr. Fisher was on vocal rest and had to lecture by writing out the lessons on the board we still learned more from him than we would've had It been any other teacher. He was amazing and a treasure.
What a great man and teacher. He commanded attention and respect from his students, but also had the gift of making learning fun, and had a likable personality. You could tell that he cared for the kids, and that they understood the studies and what it meant in the real world.
Mr. Fisher was an inspiring teacher in every way. His physics and chemistry courses were second to none, and he was a great personal example.
mr.Fisher i did not have you as a teacher. but going down the halls of NHS i could always hear all your classes and some times i would catch my self just listing to your classes when i was across the hall in another class. My friends who had you as a teacher would always talk about how cool and fun your classes were. prayers to the fisher family during this time of their loss. class of 99 NHS
There are no words, thoughts and prayers to your Family Mr. Fisher was truly a wonderful teacher and all of us that had him were very blessed.. May you find peace knowing god has him with him now..
Sherry Farrell (Murphy class of 81)
A truly no nonsense man. Never mess with Mr.Fisher. I remember him comming to the rescue of the weaker teachers. Laying the law down to unruly students Most all I remember that grin and hi how you doing Yock? Rest in peace Mr.Fisher One of the finest educators I have ever known.
Mr. Fisher was a positive influence during the late 60's, early 70's when we students needed mentors such as him. He will be sorely missed by the Class of '70....we were so glad to be able to speak with him via phone during our latest reunion in 2011. God Bless him and his family is in my prayers.
Mr. Fisher was a great teacher! His teaching style made you want to learn more & do better. I also remember him as our "trainer" for football. His ankle-taping skills were excellent. What a guy!
Mr. Fisher was a great teacher. His style made learning fun. I also remember him being our "trainer" in football & his excellent ankle-taping skills.
So sorry for your great loss Mrs. Fisher & family. Mr. Fisher was an inspiration to so many. He was a person to be respected, a person you can have a good laugh with, & a person that you can learn so many lessons from....lastly, he was a person that was a good friend. I sincerely hope that his next journey will be peaceful & joyous....
My sympathies to you Lynn, Roger and I taught across the hall from each other for many years. Even occasionally car pooled and when I drove he was comfortable enough to nap. I'm living in Littleton, Colorado now; heard of his passing from Linda Grant(another Northwood teacher)So sorry for your loss.
Charlotte Miller (Home Ec.)'62-'88
YOU WILL BE MISSED !!!! Mr.Fisher, He was a great man. Thanks for your help when I needed it. Thank you
Deepest sympathies to the Fisher family. I would've never made it through college science without being prepared by his wonderful teaching. Til this day, Ecology with Mr. Fisher remains my ultimate, most favorite class. He deeply impacted all of his students!
Mr. Fisher, you were my favorite teacher. I would have never dared to take physics if it wasn't you teaching it. You had the talent to explain it all in the most fun, engaging way (and you'd never let us get away with daydreaming!). Your students were blessed to have you. Thank you so much.
RIP MR Fisher u was an awsome teacher and u will never be forgotten. ur family is my thoughts and prayers.
Rest Peacefully, Mr. Fisher. You taught, influenced, and infected so many of us with, passion for science and nature. The world is trully a better place because you were here.
I never cared much for science in school, but that changed when I had Mr. Fisher as a teacher. He had a wonderful way of making even the most obtuse subjects sound so simple. I still think of him every time I see light bending through water or hear about the South Bass Islands and their ability to grow grapes.
Even more than that, he possessed an incredible way to take control of a room and teach lessons that had nothing to do with school.
Simply put, he was wonderful, and he will be missed by the hundreds and hundreds of students who had the honor of learning from him. -NHS class of 2001
Mr. Fisher was the best teacher I ever had. He had taught my whole family. He will be deeply missed. Heaven just received a special angel.
More than just a great teacher (and my favorite teacher) he was a great man. His ability to connect with his students and the respect that students had for him was unmatched. God bless.
Lynn, I'm so sorry to hear of Roger's passing. I had a long talk last night with Dan Wilkins, and we talked a lot of all the fun times with Roger. Thank you both for the great life memories.
May you still have many sweet September Sundays.
Roger was a great teacher of science and athletics and he will be missed tremendously.
Mr. Fisher was the greatest teacher I ever had. His impact went far beyond the classroom; he made us all better people, and better stewards of our world.
There are truly no words that can express the depth of loss that must be felt by all who were touched by Mr. Fisher's incredibly bright light, and love for life with all it's infinite mysteries (and scientific adventures).
He will be missed, but every time I see a Monarch Butterfly, I will smile and remember him.
I pass over the Maumee river when I drive out to WSM. One year I remember sharing with Roger that I was surprised to see guys fishing for walleye alreday, it was way too early. He said with some excitement that people ice fish on the Maumee and asked if I would want to go down and give it a try with him.I said sure, that would be fun! After the conversation I thought no, that would not be fun and what was I thinking?!!
Roger didn't bring it up again with me...phew!!!
I appreciated how Roger, not really knowing me, offered to spend some time and introduce something new to me:) He also conveyed his zest for life in that short conversation!
Love and prayers of comfort to Lynn and all the family.
You were my favorite Mr. Fisher. I will always remember when you "made the light come on." you have definitely turned the light on for a great deal of us. We will never forget Roger Fisher.
Rip mr fisher I went to Northwood high school I never had you in class but I always saw you walking the halls
Thank you for making science fun,and for teaching life lessons as well, truly my favorite teacher. Thoughts and prayers to the Fisher family.
Mr. Fisher not only taught so many students during his teaching career at Northwood, but he did so with great passion. Those of us who were lucky to have this man as a teacher; have forever been blessed in many ways.
My condolences to his family. Mr. Fisher was a great man and a remarkable teacher; someone that you meet very briefly but that has a profound impact. I've thought of him many times over the years and I still regret not taking his ecology class. Rest in Peace Mr. Fisher. You will be missed.
To the Fisher family,My brother Mark and I knew the Fishers when they lived on Delence,I used to watch Mark when you lived on Greenwood, our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
My condolences to his family. Mr. Fisher was a good man and a remarkable teacher; someone that you meet very briefly but that has a profound impact. I've thought of him many times over the years and I still regret not taking his ecology class. Rest in Peace Mr. Fisher. You will be missed.
This was the best teacher I had. Wouldn't let you cop out with "I don't know", he would lead you to the right answer. A wonderful and great man. You will be missed.
Mr. Fisher (he will always be Mr. Fisher to me) had a profound influence on my life. He was a mentor before I knew what a mentor was. He helped guide my interest in math and science, leading to my career as a mechanical engineer. The world is definitely a better place because of him.
Distance will keep me from attending his service but I will be there in thought. My condolences to his family and friends at this sad time.
- David Polakowski, Northwood Class of 1970
Dear Lynn and family, I am so sorry to hear this news. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I can still see the expression on Roger's face the day that Barb James and I, dressed as detectives, arrived at his classroom to "arrest" and "kidnap" him for the surprise you had planned for him to celebrate your anniversary. He was a wonderful man and will be missed by so many.
Rest in peace Mr. Fisher. You were the best math teacher I ever had. I always looked forward to learning from you. Prayers for your family.
My heartfelt thoughts and prayers go to the entire Fisher family as this incredible man will most certainly be missed. Roger was exceptionally intelligent, witty, curious, kind and very much respected. Fond memories of a wonderful man will always remain in the hearts of so many.
Rest in peace Mr. Fisher. I had the pleasure of having you as a teacher over the course of several years and multiply courses, and your impact on my life was immense. You will truly be missed.
I am Blessed and Honored to have had Mr. Fisher as my teacher from 1975 to 1978. He was my Mentor. I went into Radiology due to his great teaching of Physics and Chemistry. May he always be remembered by Northwood Schools in the highest of standards. My sympathies to the Fisher family.
Mary I was very sorry to hear about the passing of your brother. Don and I will hold your family in our prayers.
It was a pleasure to be a part of the Fisher family, heartwarming to witness the unconditional love that Lynn had for Rog and quite an honor to hear so many wonderful stories from friends and family through the "open door policy" at the Fisher home. I will never forget the monthly lunch gatherings with his Waite high school friends, seeing his face light up, hearing more great stories and feeling so much love as his friends would line up to take turns saying hello to him then departed with a peck on his forehead. At home with Rog I would put the jukebox oldies on and honestly I can't carry a tune across the street but that never mattered to him, I'd sing my heart out and he'd smile and say " I love you, you're cool" and I'd laugh and say "no Rog, you are the cool one and I love you right back !" Thanks for the memories, I'm sure gonna miss ya. Luv ya Bud
Rest in peace Mr. Fisher. Condolences to his family. He was the best science teacher imaginable. I loved going to his class every day.
The Roger Fisher Show was my favorite show at NHS. Mr Fisher was an awesome educator and mentor. As one of the students who owes her science related career to him, he will be missed. Prayers to his family and thank you for sharing him with the students of Northwood for so many years.
Kellie (Bishop) Morris class of 1988
Mr Fisher. One of the best teachers ever. You will truly be missed. God bless.
Rodger was a great Teacher who impacted many of his studends lifes. He will be sadly missed by many. Steve Schiffler class of 1970
God Bless and prayers to the Fisher family, Mr. Fisher or Rodge as he was sometimes referred to as will never be forgotten. He has touched so many lives at Northwood High School for three and a half decades. Rest in Peace Mr. Fisher and we will be thinking about you, because all of your students have so many great memories to share.
Roger stands out as the most influential teacher I ever had, not because of his course content but because of the way he challenged me, prodded me, to be something. While this was over 45 years ago, his lessons about life still are so valuable to me now.
Lynn, We have recently spoken of how Roger had been regenerated by his multivitamins and I am sure that all is a shock that has died. Never enough time and where now to put that Love? We will not beable to be ther on the 1st ( my Ben's birthday! but I will be thinking of you all & will try to connect after my stay in Jamaica!
