One of the most significant events to occur during Roger's time as Chief was the Presidential Activation of the 128th Air Refueling Squadron for Operation Allied Force, the liberation of Kosovo.

Sergeant Steckhan was one of the first unit boomers to undergo conversion training to the KC-135 aircraft in January 1978. Following the conversion, Roger found himself even busier with the numerous deployments involved in the Strategic Air Command's worldwide commitment.

Roger's dedication to his military career was shown in his quick progression through the Career Development Courses and Skill Levels. His efforts resulted in promotion to the rank of Technical Sergeant in April 1970.

1969 - Roger took a position as an inflight-refueling specialist, better known as a boom operator. His first flight was in April 1969 and within 90 days he was fully checked out as a boomer. Roger became fully combat and mission ready on July 16, 1969.

Gone But Not Forgotten - Sylvester Sweeney (1914 - 1977) and Dolores Sweeney (Nee Ircink - Twin of Roger's Mother) (1918 - 2003). Sylvester passed away from bone marrow cancer. Dolores died 26 years later from multiple causes related to osteoporosis and advanced age.

Upon completion of Basic, Roger was sent to Sheppard AFB to attend the Reciprocating Engine Specialist Technical Course. He graduated as the Outstanding Graduate and was promoted to Airman Second Class on June 18, 1964.

1961 - Plans to widen Hwy 100 had begun. But it meant taking away 1/2 of our pine trees and the entire entrance to our family owned Pine View Motel. We were compensated $65,000 and we used that money to build the Timbers Restaurant.

A lady selling $100 Schnauzers arrived at the motel. Mom and Dad okayed the purchase if they didn't have to pay for it. I gathered $50 but did not have more money. When Roger saw my sadness, he paid the remainder and bought the dog for me. It was one of my finest moments in life.

Hales Corners: Arthur and Mae Steckhan. When not with my folks, our children came to work with us at the Steckhan Curtain Company in the summer months. They went to downtown movie theaters, out to eat, and liked to watch the bridge open and close over the Milwaukee River.

Roger walked Jean to my parents home and waited for us to pick them up after work.
They all played cards and pool. Roger also helped my dad with shovelling snow, cutting lawn or raking leaves. He was always eager to help.

Hales Corners - While growing up, Roger and I went sledding and tobogganing at Whitnall Park. Having an older brother allowed me to overcome fear at an early age. I hung on for dear life, too afraid to scream.

While growing up, Roger and I enjoyed our family tradition to attend the 4th of July festivities in Hales Corners. Our whole family, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, met in front of Grandpa Ircink's Tavern. This tradition carried into adulthood and we continued to bring our own children to the Parade and Fireworks.

Rodger will be greatly missed, my prayers are with you all. I was blessed to have had precious memories. Just returned from Nellis AF base, and all Airmen, old and new lost one of there own. I look at my son in Uniform and will always remember Rodger.
