My dear brother. A year has passed since you left us and I still think of you every day. A lot of dramatic things have happened since then and I have wished so many times that you were here with us. I know from your place in Heaven that you truly are with us but how I long for the comfort of your physical presence. We all love you and miss you terribly! Save a seat for daddy Jerry and show him the way in when he gets there. With love from your youngest sister .

I just found out COL Tait passed away. He will be sorely missed. What a great soldier, officer, mentor, and human being. I served with him when he was the III Corps G2 and I was the Deputy G-2, III Corps Artillery. He was a great sounding board and always willing to listen and offer his advice. I became his Operations OIC on various exercises and then as the OIC, C2 Operations FWD in Iraq. I specifically asked to work for him when we deployed and he accommodated me. As you can imagine in the whirlwind that was Iraq, his was always a calming reasoned voice amongst the noise. I was glad to call him a "friend". I last saw him on the steps of INSCOM HQs as he was departing. I was then serving as the XO to MG Lacquement, which was my last assignment before I retired. Even then he offered me words of encouragement and wisdom. What an immaculate professional,,,, what a Great American!! The Army, the MI Corps, and the human race will miss him. You have my most sincerest of condolences

My dear brother,I have missed you so much and think of you every day. I have part of a prayer for you, Psalm 23:6 Ye though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I shall fear no evil .... 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of The Lord forever and ever..... Rest on peace brother !!! You were so loved and respected by everyone who knew you(and even by some who didn't ). Our grief is only a testament to what a fine person you are. I love and miss you every day, Catherine

Rebecca, So sorry to hear of Jerry's passing. We are saddened his bright spirit left this life so early, but very thankful we knew him. We served together as young LTs at Ft Ord and bumped into each other throughout our Army careers, the last time in Iraq in 2005. He was always full of energy and ideas--which we all benefited from. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Hoping you find comfort and joy in his memories very soon.

I just found out that Col Tait passed and I am so sorry for your loss. He was a wonderful man and leader that always made you want to do your best. I served with him at 104th MI BN and then ran into him in Iraq in 2004. He gave me many opportunities to succeed and made sure I had all the tools I needed. I'm sure in heaven he is training angels to be the best they can.

Sir,
Unfortunately, I am just finding out about your passing. You seemed to like me when you met me while working for CGI Federal as the Foundry Program's Intelligence Developer & Trainer at NGIC (Charlottesville, VA). We realized I went to high school with your daughters in Harker Heights, and we shared some laughs and memories. Thank you for putting in a good word for me to my bosses at the time, and for sharing a brief memory that day. From what I gather, you were an upstanding Military Intelligence Officer and intelligence professional; one I will continually attempt to emulate. Thank you for your service to this great nation, and may God Bless you in eternity, and your family who is left behind.
-Intelligence Analyst, US Army

Rebecca, I just found out today about my great friends passing, My heart is heavy with sadness if you ever need anything Pam I am here for you. He meant so much to me as a New CSM he treated me like a brother, I was proud to be his CSM and friend. Lessons learned from Jerry served me well through out my career and life. When ever he visited Fort Huachuca he made time to have dinner with me and Pam. I will miss him.
October 24, 2013
I was shocked to learn of COL Tait's passing. He was my former Battalion Commander. What a fantastic leader. He was an inspiration to me and my fellow soldiers at the time. I will miss him dearly.
October 18, 2013
I was passed the sad news of COL Tait's passing by a fellow Soldier - we both had the privilege to serve under COL Tait. If there was ever a "copy-paste" function developed to make officers for our military, COL Tait would the model use. Reading through the condolence guide you see a "who's who" of our military spanning decades, some names are missing but COL Tait was a strong influence in our MI Corps across all ranks. He was a rock for me and my family during a medical crisis overseas and I was very pleased that he was able to meet the result of that crisis (my son!) some years later at Ft Hood. This is a huge loss not just to our community, but to the world that he impacted through those who knew him because in knowing him he changed all of us for the better. May God bless and keep you and your family Rebecca and may the memory of Jerry always warm your heart.
October 01, 2013
Mrs. Tait, I just received this sad news. My prayers are with you and your family. I served with COL Tait when he was the 104th intelligence battalion commander and then again in Iraq. He was a good and honorable man; moreover, I always valued his opinion and respected his selfless service. Again, your family is in our prayers.

I knew Colonel (then Captain) Tait when he was a Company Commander for the 5th MI Company in Munich, Germany. Captain Tait was an extremely competent & fine officer, who truly cared for the soldiers under his command. I consider it an honor to have known him, & am very proud to have served in the 5th MI Company while he was the Commanding Officer! I wish to extend my condolences to his entire family over their loss. Colonel Jerry Tait ... May You REST IN PEACE!

We loved to tease Jerry and make him smile. I still remember him washing everyone's cars every weekend, and how much he loved Krystal burgers. Jerry was like a second father to me, and I will never forget how humble and selfless he was. My thoughts and prayers are with you all, and I hope that you know how much I love you. May The Lord bring peace into your lives and may your tears of sadness reflect the great memories that we all shared with The great "Jer Bear."

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to William Jerry Tait, Jr. our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Jerry. And to Jerry it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during Operations Desert Storm, Iraqi Freeedom and Enduring Freedom while serving in the U.S. Army. Jerry, we commend you for your honorable service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, Generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. You were a true friend. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

Rebecca and family,
Craig and Terry Hanson here--we were in Munich and the 66th MI with you from 1990-92.
We were so saddened to hear of Jerry's passing. I still remember his friendliness, and kindness, and calming presence whenever I would have occasion to need his help down in the 18th MI as I flailed in my bde staff position, very much in a steep learning curb.
And that gentle smile! We saw each other only a few times over the ensuing years, but that smile was the same!
Please accept our deepest condolences for your very difficult loss.
September 18, 2013

Rebecca, Mary Beth and Carol Ann, My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with you now and always. Jerry was the one more than anyone who taught me what it was to really be an Army officer. I doubt I ever lived up to what he would have expected and worked so hard to nurture, but I knew in my heart just the same what the standard was. Yes, in terms of competence and leadership, but more importantly in terms of kindness and real friendship. Deep regards to the Tait family. Love and prayers, Betsy Barron

September 18, 2013
In a lifetime, you meet a handful of individuals by whom you measure all others. Jerry Tait was one of those benchmark people for me. We met at MIOBC and subsequently served together in the 107th MI Bn before I switched career tracks to become a JAG officer, where the critical observation of leaders, both military and civilian, has been a major facet of my job. In nearly thirty years, only a few have met the standard set by Jerry, the consummate officer and gentleman. While nothing will fill the void created by Jerry's untimely death, I hope that you can find some solace in the fact that our lives are filled with people who Jerry mentored and nurtured; those who will carry on the legacy of service, which was so important to him.
September 18, 2013
To the Tait Family: Our condolences on your loss. We enjoyed very much the time we used to spend talking with Jerry.
September 18, 2013
Our thoughts and prayers reach out to you. May the peace of our Heavenly Father be with you and may Jerry rest in peace until you can be reunited as a family. Jerry will always hold a special place in our hearts as a true friend, professional mentor, and Brother-in-Arms. We always knew he cared about all with whom it worked. It has been our honor to have known him.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of COL Jerry Tait, a consumate professional and lifelong selfless servant.

I was privileged to work closely with Jerry as part of his team delivering professional services to the Intelligence community during his most recent professional engagement.

I will remember him as the "quiet professional". Jerry cared deeply about his team and the Gov't end-users and brought a deep understanding of the complexities of the mission to each and every circumstance.

He will be remembered for the example he set and for his basic human decency in the face a career filled with challenging assignments and environments.

Rest in Peace COL Tait.

Rest in peace, my friend. You truly made a difference to so many people with your compassion and leadership in the too short of time you were with us. It seems like yesterday we were doing wargames - and I couldn't have picked a better buddy to work with. Always calm, cool and collect, you inspired me, and everyone else, with your voice of reason. I served with COL William Tait during the Surge 06-08 My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family now Sir. One of my fondest memories of COL Tait was in garrison. I went into his office to drop some documents off and noticed his coffee cup collection on the wall. At that time he walked in from a meeting. I asked him where he had gotten the wooden display that held each cup as I too was a coffee cup collector. What I got instead was time with a man that proceeded to tell me about each cup. I was enthusiastic as well since there is always a good story behind every item every Soldier has displayed in their office. It was not long before a Soldier was sent up from the second floor to come get me. Before I left he asked if I was ready for my assignment as his Platoon SGT. I said Yes Sir I am. After that it was comforting to know when I came to see him in his office in Iraq to discuss products it was mission first but I knew I could also speak to him as well about the world in general…But if we got to talking football, it was all about Alabama…Every person finds some comfort in words…Sir, I find comfort in thinking of you now with these…Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”…You are home now Sir, rest in peace...It was an honor serving with you, and for you I say, ROLL TIDE!

I remember the army gave me orders on a Friday afternoon to report to a TDY in Monterey the following Monday. Obviously I couldn't file a travel voucher or receive a travel advance. And back then we didn't have military travel credit cards. So Col. Tait gave me his own personal credit card and told me to use it and pay him back. I was a corporal at the time. He was my batallion commander! That's what kind of man he was!

Dear God - Thank you for Jerry – for his spirit that endures and the many ways that he loved those around him.

Lord, we pray for those who mourn Jerry's death: Rebecca, Mary Beth, Carol Ann, Erline, Jerry, Beth and Catherine and his family and friends. Surround them with your love. Be gentle with them in their grief. Show them the depths of your love, that they may not be overwhelmed by their loss, but have confidence in your goodness and strength to meet the days to come.

You know our hearts and share our sorrows. Jerry's death hurts. When we are angry at the loss we have sustained, when we long for words of comfort, yet find them hard to hear, turn our grief to truer living, our affliction to firmer hope.

Father, Jerry's death also brings an emptiness into our lives. We are separated from him and feel broken. Give us confidence that he is safe and his life complete with you, and bring us together at the last to the wholeness and fullness of your presence in heaven, where your saints and angels enjoy you forever and ever.

My heart aches for the Tait family. Jerry was a true friend, an exceptional man, and an American Hero. I feel fortunate to have known him since our 2LT days in 1980 at Fort Huachuca. I found some solace in a quote a dear friend sent me: "death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal." Rest in Peace Jerry, the world is a better place because of your presence.
