I have loved Anne since I helped to organize a play-reading group in my home six years ago and Anne soon joined. I immediately found her to be extraordinarily bright, yes, and beautiful as well. When the group disbanded, I called her to ask her whether she would meet me for Sunday brunch at the Lake Shore Bistro. After some hemming and a little hawing, she agreed, and so we met there and I confirmed my suspicion that I: might love her. It was nearly Valentine's Day, and she accepted my invitation to dinner at Il Mito on that day, when I gave her flowers and a book of poetry. One good thing led to the next as it often does in these situations, and soon we were going to plays, concerts, and more dinners together. By and by, a number of her good friends became mine as well (and still are), and we spent more and more time in each other's company, even having dinner together most evenings. Soon I realized that I was undeniably in love with her and told her so; I cannot claim that she seemed pleased at that for quite some time, but in the meanwhile we traveled together through the Midwest and eventully to the Galapagos as my love was deepening. When she needed a liver transplant, her beloved son Mark and I sped her to University Hospital in Madison, where Mark slept on a sofa down the hall and Anne and I stayed up all night on a hospital bed asking each other questions about poets and their poetry. The surgery the next morning was successful, but Anne had to spend the next two weeks in recovery there before I could drive her home. Over the following years as my love for her deepened we continued the life that we had established, until she was diagnosed with liver cancer that had already advanced when it was discovered. We spent many long days over the next several months at Froedtert Hospital's Cancer Center, but they did not seem very long to me because we had those days together. As the months progressed, other friends, including Mary Ward and Caroll Gregg began to transport her to the hospital, a good thing since Caroll is an experienced nurse. All that time my love for Anne continued to grow as her disease intensified. I will always be grateful to not only Caroll and Mary but to all of Anne's army of friends who helpled her in every way they knew how and to Mark, whom Anne loved deeply and had every reason to love. Anne dear, I will survive this deep tragedy in my life, but with your memory in my heart and mind and my love for you undiminished, Alan, aka Doc
