She is looking into the camera with an impish baby-toothed smile crowning her face from ear to ear.

Her eyes, they look to be green, are sparkling and a pretty little barrette holds back the bangs of her pixie haircut.

On her right forearm, you can see are what appears to be a couple of sticker tattoos that little girls just love, most likely depicting a fairy or unicorn or a cute little animal of some sort. I can almost hear her giggles as she and her friends pressed them onto their tiny arms......

She looks so delightfully happy.

The caption says she's working on an art project at the local library just this past summer, no doubt a nice break from a hot dry summer we experienced here in the northeast. I'm guessing a lunch and a nice swim topped off her day and she shared it in great little girl detail with her family that evening.

And the smile on her face has hypnotized me.

Is it because she so reminds me of my own little girls, now grown and mothers of babies themselves? Or myself, a Tom-boy at 6 who loved to laugh and joke and be silly like all little kids of 6......

Or is it the feeling of such hope and promise that radiates from her face that pierces my heart.

Maybe it's because she reminds me so much of the students I work with. When i see them through the day, they flash a smile and share a splayed finger wave at me as I pass by. Once in while, one will rush to me for a hug and jump back in line....

On their way to lunch or the playground, they are so innocent, so trusting, so perfect. They are the joy in my day....

Just like Caroline.

But Caroline won't be at school on Monday nor will 19 of her classmates and 6 of the adults who tried so valiantly to save them all. Her tiny hand was wrenched from the hands of her parents and family and friends on the morning of December 14, eleven short days til Christmas....and our tears will not stop.

But I resolve to keep Caroline in my heart for the rest of my life. And when my time comes to pass over, I'll look for that beautiful little girl with the impish smile and those sparkling eyes.....

And when I find her, I'll say "Hello, sweetheart! How wonderful to see you!"

And give her a great big lingering hug....

Til then, rest in peace, dear angel......
