COL Eugene C. Camp, U.S. Army (ret.)

Although I didn't know, I am sure my father did. He was with the 251st from Pearl Harbor to Bougainville. And may very well have attended OCS with Gene on Fiji. He was the XO of Battery C on Bougainville. My Daad didn't talk of that time much. Through Gene's writings I got to know some of the horrors my Dad went through. They were a tough breed. My condolences. David Hendren

While we knew him only briefly and mostly through our association with the ROMEO group, Pat and I had great admiration for Gene and members of his family we met. I felt akin to him as a soldier and an officer because we came up in similar ways. We have a copy of one of the stories he wrote; about a humorous adventure he had while a Lt. during WWII. It described how he and a Navy friend borrowed the Colonel's fishing boat and equipment, went to an island lacking drinking water, went swimming on the other side, lost communications with their home base, and returned to their boat to find that it had washed out to sea with the tide. Rescued by a native boatman, they finally got back, made their apologies to the Colonel and went off to determine if there would be a Report of Survey and how much they would have to pay. Since it was war time, supply wrote it off as a loss at sea. When we think of Gene, we will remember that story. He came up the hard way, did what he had to do and in so doing helped make the, "..greatest generation..", great. May the memory of his life, the love he shared with you, and the Love and Comfort of God sustain you.

My late husband, Richard Farley, always thought of Col. Gene Camp as one of his uncles. Gene and Margaret both were considered extended family among the Farleys, and I will always remember Gene's quick, sinsere smile and easy laughter whenever we were around him. He was a great patriot and a wonderful man. Lana Farley (San Antonio, TX)
