I am saddened by the news of Dave's passing. He was a very good man! My prayers go out to Scott, Lynn, Pat, and all of Dave's friends and family.

I am Tom Reichard now living in St. Louis, and Dave was one of my best friends in grade school. My younger brother Jerry who still lives in Dayton sent me Dave's obituary with the Subject Line: "This Name Sounds Familiar", and the message: "I seem to remember that 'Dave Costello' was the name of a friend of yours in our youth. This guy was apparently 5 days older than you so this may be the same person."

My reply was: Yes indeed, Dave was one third of our self-appointed 'Triple Terror' gang, along with Dan Gaston and me in 5th-6th grade at Our Lady of Mercy school. Dave was the 2nd-smallest guy in the class, I was next-smallest, and Dan wasn't much bigger. A new, pretty big guy moved into our class and began to bully some of us around, so we thus teamed up and let him know that if he hurt any one of us, all three would gang up and 'get him back'. It worked !
At a reunion in 1988 for the 44th anniversary of 8th-grade graduation, each person told favorite memories. I told about the 'Triple Terror' episode and added: "We didn't take on the really tough guys like Carl Cramer and Eddie Hess". Dave got a good big laugh by commenting: "We were just small, not stupid."

It was my privilege and pleasure to share just a bit of the life of David Lee Costello (as he was known in those days). I offer my empathy and sympathy to you who shared the rest of it.

Dave was very special to me after my wife passed away. We met at Hospice while attending grieving support sessions after our wives passed away. He was always there for me to share our thoughts and feelings. Avery understanding and supportive friend. He will be missed.

"God Bless You Dave".

David was born when I was three years old living in Indianapolis. My mother, Catharine Harriman Tomlinson, and David's mother, Catharine Bailey Costello, were first cousins. Our grandmothers were sisters, Birdie Blanche Bailey Harriman and Ivy Pearl Bailey Boyer. While I was growing up, we often visited the family in Dayton. I saw Dan as a baby. I left Indianapolis when I married Frank Lanaman at the age of 17, but I continued to keep in touch with the Boyer family. Dave even came to see us when we lived in Atlanta. I heard from him when Frank died in 2011 and learned that Rose had died, too. Dave and I both said that it was good to have family. He was in a retirement home as I am in Columbus. I know he will be missed. My love to all, Grace Iola Tomlinson Lanaman.
