Dr. Donald Joseph Eastmead
Drew, I remember you as a little baby when I worked with your father at Hahn. He was a very special man. I remember his warm smile and gentle manner and I can't help but smile.
My memories of him will always include the love he demonstrated for his calling as a physician. It seemed to matter not whether his patient was a child or grown up. It is my pleasure to have worked beside him in Germany. Thanks Dr Eastmead.
Drew, I remember when you were born at Hahn AB, Germany. I worked with your father, providing care for newborn infants. He was the medical officer of the day (MOD) one night when I admitted a patient experiencing a critical obstetrical emergency. He was a calming influence, helping me to call in both Obstetricians and the surgical crew to save the mother's life. He was a good man, kind, and so easy to work with. My heart goes out to you in your time of sorrow.
I saw Dr. Eastmead as a patient for most of my youth. Those appointments are the only time I've ever looked forward to going to the doctor. It's only now that I'm older and looking back that I can truly appreciate how much he cared about his patients. From keeping track of my personal aspirations, to the conversing with me like a friend instead of a young child, I've yet to meet a physician who fully measures up to his ability to interact with patients. He had a gift, and made a career out of sharing it to help others; his was truly a life well lived.
Drew and Family,
I am so incredibly sorry for your loss, our loss. I had the privilege of working with Don as residents at Travis and again in Germany. He was such a wonderful physician, just a really fabulous guy. One of the last times I saw Don, he was grinning ear to ear, and had a delightfully mischievous twinkle in his eye...classic Don. He has finally "slipped the surly bonds of earth" and will be missed...but, when I look at the stars tonight, I know I will find him there.
