Frank Bailey

September 28, 2011
It has taken me some time to address Frank's death. I was at my desk today and thinking about how a message from him would pop up when I wasn't expecting one. I miss that.

Frank was one of those students that every professor would want. He was committed, focused, engaged, and compassionate.
From the first day he walked into the Office of Adult and Returning Students(OARS), to the day he received his master's degree, Frank grew from a nervous returning student into a leader and accomplished professional. During his years working in the OARS Office, he not only assisted students in any way he could, but he organized the first OARS student association, played Santa Claus for the children during the OARS Christmas parties, and organized trips and activities, among other activities.

Frank was not only my student; he became my friend and then my colleague. I was so proud of him when he was hired at NWACC, a dream of his to work at a college. Then his first year at the college he went on and received the Rehabilitant of the Year award from the National Rehabilitation Association (NRA). He wrote to me and said that he never thought there would be a chance he would be joining the NRA, and here he was receiving an award.

When he wrote that the State Rehabilitation Agency in Benton County wanted him to apply, he was torn, but what an accomplishment for him. He told me to keep my fingers crossed, but there was no need to. Frank's ability was always apparent, as well as his passion for assisting those with disabilities.

Frank, I will always have a place for you in my heart. You thanked me all the time for assisting you, but I thank you, as you are the one that always made me feel successful.

P.J., Frank volunteered for me at Peachtree Hospice in the past. I dont know if I ever met you, but I feel as if I know you from all the times Frank spoke of you. I was shocked to hear yesterday of Frank's home going. I am asking God to give you comfort P.J. - words are so inadequate at times like these - only God can minister adequately to us. I can only tell you how very sorry I am.

Frank was a lifelong family friend who, just like his parents, was always there to provide love and support to everyone in our family. He was truly a remarkable person who made a positive impact on everyone's life he touched, no matter how brief. Although I very rarely had the opportunity to see Frank, the last time being when my dad passed in January 2008, and even though it had been literally decades since I'd seen him last, he had a hug and comforting words that made me feel as if I had just spoken to him yesterday. I will genuinely miss him, but it makes me smile to know that he is reunited with his mom & dad and many other loved ones who went before him.
