Gary Guss was born in Spokane, WA, on June 24, 1942. He was the oldest of three children of Jack and Sylvia Guss, and grew up mostly in Denver, Colorado. As a child, Gary played football, bowled, and even competed in archery. He attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, before moving out to California and graduating from UCLA with undergraduate and graduate degrees. While attending UCLA, he met Bonnie Cochran and married her in January of 1964. Bonnie and Gary had two sons, Greg and Brad. They moved to Westlake Village in 1973 and lived in the same home for over 40 years.
Gary had long, successful career at Hughes Aircraft where he was one of the first computer programmer in the company, writing custom financial planning software for the multi-billion dollar company. In 1982, Gary was diagnosed with leukemia, but was able to fight it off for 30 years, giving him time to enjoy life and see the birth of his two grandchildren, Ian and Julia. Unfortunately, the medicine that treated one form of leukemia caused another, more severe form of the disease. Just days before entering the hospital to fight his leukemia, Gary and Bonnie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their sons, daughters-in-law, Amy and Tina, and grandchildren. He passed on March 1, 2014, surrounded by family, at the age of 71. Gary is greatly missed by a wide circle of family and friends and will never be forgotten.
He is survived by his wife Bonnie, his son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Amy, son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Tina, his grandchildren, Ian and Julia, and his sister Jackie (Derrol) Moorhead.
