Heywood "Woody" Sommers

Wednesday, February 13, 2013
A life well lived, and a loss to us and to the world in general. Woody was one of the good guys..... Personally, he was a reinforcing influence to my own still-uninformed idealism way back when in the newsroom of the mid-70s. Woody seemed an Old Soul even back then, given the depth of his insights and quickness of wit in drilling down to the essence of the thing at hand. His was one of the sharpest minds -- and searing wits (which made Woody a truly funny guy) -- I've had the privilege to encounter. It says everything about him, too, how he is so remembered here foremost for his devotion to his friends and family in his closest circle, and to this planet and its many forms of life in the wider scope. ... Condolences to Di and his family ... and let's all memorialize his life a bit more by staying, or getting back, in touch with those from yesteryear who made us better. That is, after all, what this passage we call life is all about...

Diane, Liz and Darthy: Marianne and I wish to express our deepest condolences on your loss. While I worked for Woody for several years, I really got know him on a more personal level in recent years when we would run into each other at the Stop & Shop. Woody was one of the 'good guys' and loved his family. So sorry that his retirement was so short. Our prayers are with you.

Dianne, Elizabeth, Darthy, and the rest of the Sommers family: I am so sorry that Woody is no longer with us. I think of those Sunday nights often when he'd grace our kitchen table with his presence with Elizabeth in tow to play with the other children at our home. I know he'll be terribly missed by all of you. It's hard now and will be for some time, but at least he didn't suffer a long illness. You're in my prayers now and always. Grace and Peace.
