Dear Mama, I still miss you so much and I cant believe it is 3 years since I saw you. The pain of your absence is not eased at all and I don't think it ever will. I cant believe this happened and my life will NEVER be the same. I love you more than anything and I cant believe that they would take you at 83,you should of lived much longer....Im working as a intake clinician at a hospital and working on my private practice in Waukegan...All these accomplishments pale without you to be here to celebrate my becoming a doctor. I am writing this to say goodbye to Iris a truly wonderful and warm person who wanted to take everyone she met under her wing. Yia Yia as she liked to be called had great energy and a zest for life and spent most of her time doting over her children and grandchildren. She had spent most of her life in Real Estate sales and showed her expertise in this time and again both managing a large office and working is someone elses. Yia Yia loved to cook for her family and others but was quite fussy about what ingredients others put in her food. Sometimes I would cook and she would look over my shoulder to see what I was adding. I thought it was funny because really she would want to do the cooking. Yia Yia told me many stories about when she was young like when her older sister would take her in her stroller to the train station when the military personel whould get off during WWII. Her sister told her which good looking sailors to say "Hi ya Sailor" to to get their attention. Another story she told which said a lot about her courage and seance of social justice was when she went to Florida and the age of 18 to work in her brothers restaurant. This was a time of legal segregation in the south and there was a bus boy who worked there that was over 40 years old and had childern. The other staff at the restaurant was very cruel to this man calling him to help using racial slurs of the worst kind. Her brother had made her a manager of the restaurant and she felt so bad at the treatment this man had to suffer that she called all the staff together and told them that the next time she heard any staff member use those slurs against this man she would fire them. To take a stand like this at a time of legal segregation was very couragous and she kept this attitude throughout her life. She lived all her life with her daughter Athanasia and instilled this same sense of social justice in her. Yia Yia was the kind of person that if you met her she would leave a lasting impression with you. She loved her children John, Elaine, Georganne and Athanasia her grandchildren and her great grandchildren and most everyone she met. You will be missed Yia Yia we love you and know that you are among the saints and angels watching over your family.

Your adopted son,
Joe
