Leo Donald Brevard 1921 - 2013

Leo Donald Brevard

Tuesday, December 24, 2013
Mr. Brevard was my tenth grade biology teacher at South Meck in 69-70. He was the hardest, strictest teacher I ever had, and one of the best. We had to have our biology book every day, which we had to place on the front left corner of our lab desks. We could never, ever touch that book. I did a perfect impression of him, and my friends talked me into doing it in front of the class on the last day. I wore white socks with sandals and said Mr. Brevard lines: "You're nothing but a bunch of warm bodies! You're nothing but a bunch of cabbage heads! There's not a student amongst you!" Fortunately for me, Mr. Brevard laughed. A few years later, in college, I needed another science class. I told the biology department I wanted to challenge the class by test to get credit. When I told them the only biology I had was in the tenth grade, they laughed at me. I passed that test and got full college credit for the course. I saw Mr. Brevard a few years after that and thanked him. Our weekly tests on Latin roots and syllables taught me lessons about language that I still use today as a college English professor. Mr. Brevard was an inspiration to me and to thousands of other students. What a hard teacher he was, but what a great one! I thank him for his lifetime of service, in the military, as a conservationist, as a coach, and most of all as a teacher. Please know that in the midst of your loss, many, many people honor his memory.

Eleanor:

It was with great sadness that I learned of Leo's passing. He was one of the main reasons that I studied Biology and received a bachelors and masters degree in biology at UNC Chapel Hill. Although I spent most of my professional career with the State Board of Education, it was the time spent teaching biology that was the most rewarding. I have him to thank for a number of things while at Valdese High School, class of 1961.

I am so sorry that such a vibrant man has left this earthly home. I was in awe of both Brevards when they taught us at Valdese High School. They were the epitome of fine teachers, and I have never forgotten them. I will have Eleanor and the entire family in my prayers and pray that God will hold you in His mighty hands especially during this very sad time. He will be missed.

Coach Brevard was a great man, teacher, and coach. He impacted my life in a huge positive way, teaching me about respect, determination, and the results of hard work and self discipline. Class of VHS '53 was undefeated in regular season B BALL. AM IN Oregon at this time and cannot attend memorial service.

Respectfully,
CDR ED BLEYNAT, USN(Ret.)
