It became a lasting tradition for more than two decades that Merle and I would wish each other a Merry Christmas greeting on the phone every December 24th--this year being the exception.
Merle and I worked side by side for seven years at Aden & Josi. I mentioned to him recently that the time I spent working with him at that store was truly one of the highlights of my life. Not only was he my boss, he was also my mentor and excellent friend.
In recent years, we have spent great afternoons over coffee sharing laughs and recounting stories and good memories of long ago.
God bless you, Merle, I will never forget you.

We were very blessed to enjoy and find inspiration in Merle, here at Sunset Athletic Club. For years his commitment to a healthy lifestyle were admirable, but as the years past and his physical challenges developed it was his positive outlook on life that gave us inspiration. Even now, when I see the sports page sitting on the table I look for the friendly notes other members and staff would write on it for Merle to see. Those notes would always put a smile on his face as he sat down each day and read the sports page from top to bottom.
We miss you Merle.

One of my fondest memories of Uncle Merle is going to Duck football games with him and my parents in the late 80's. His seat was in another section but we always squeezed him in our row so he could sit with us. He always joked about why it was so overcrowded in our row like he didn't know why. He liked to go get a hot dog at the alumni center at half time too, he talked about that a lot, I think it was free. The Ducks were really starting to improve dramatically by about 1989 and we saw lots of historic games including Kenny Wheaton's pick six against the Huskies and beating BYU with Ty Detmer at quarter back. That was a pretty big deal back then. It made it a very special time that I will always remember experiencing with Uncle Merle.

Rest in Peace Uncle Merle, GO DUCKS!
