Dear Mary, Kate and Kelsey,

My thoughts and prayers continue to be with you. It is hard for me to believe that Mike has been gone almost a month. I very much miss him; especially in our boss's Monday afternoon staff meetings. I can only imagine how difficult it must be for the three of you.

In the twelve years that I worked with Mike, I came to have great affection for him. He was quite a guy. One of my favorite “Trahan” remembrances happened one workday afternoon. I was visiting with Mike in his corner office on the seventh floor; I think the topic started out on the status of Docuware software implementation but evolved into sharing tidbits about our personal lives and families as it usually did. (Mike was so proud of each of you.) Just as the conversation was winding down and I was preparing to leave his office, the emergency lights in the hallway started blinking and smoke was billowing out of the room where the company's computer equipment was housed. I felt completely panicked and started race walking toward the stairway exist. I looked back over my shoulder and saw that Mike had turned and was heading TOWARD the source of the smoke. The incident did turn out to be minor but Mike didn't know that when he was headed toward the smoke. I later told him that I thought he was taking an unnecessary risk and that he should have evacuated to safety. He completely dismissed my point of view. He said those were “his guys” in harms way (all of the people reporting to him were “his guys”) and his equipment and he was responsible for the well being of all. He would not have ever shirked that responsibility. That was just the way he was. There just will never be another like Mike Trahan.
