I was a student in Dr. Fink's homiletics classes at Grace Theological Seminary between 1973-1976. His lasting legacy in my ministry was his insistence that we preachers give strict attention to the details of the text. I will never forget constructing an outline of the entire book of Jonah in which every word of the text had its own outline point, or the notorious commentary on 3 John. The discipline of faithfulness to the written text of Scripture on the part of the preacher as taught by Dr. Fink in his homiletics classes is one which has been formative to my entire ministry of nearly 40 years now. As hard as it was at the time, I have been grateful for it ever since. A whole generation of expositors can rise up and call him blessed.
