When I became editor of the Religious Herald in 1992, Gene was one of the first persons who called to offer good wishes and friendship. On many other occasions he called to affirm my work, lament some event in our denomination or chat about our mutual work as Baptist state paper editors. He wrote clear prose and challenging ideas even when he knew his candor would come back at him in the form of critics. His commitment to a free press among Baptists made us better. I am grateful for his faithfulness to the Gospel, his authentic witness and his devotion to family. It is an honor to have been his friend. God bless you Robbie and family. Know that Vivian and I have you in our prayers.
