I was sad to see the notice of my Captain's passing. Dick was my first Commanding Officer as a newly commissioned Ensign. He was a profound influence on my wife's and my life even though we only served together for three months. His counsel on balancing family and professional priorities in our life turned out to be a cornerstone of how we conducted our lives. I will always remember the sight of my "tough as nails" CO with his wife and four little girls. What an excellent example for a young officer and wife expecting their first child. Dick had served in my hometown in the mid 1950s and that created a bond that provided an opening to serious discussions regarding what's important in life. The leadership example provided by Dick was a model for my 40 plus year career. I am most grateful.
Rest in Peace shipmate. Fair winds, following seas and Godspeed.
