Robert H. Akins 1931 - 2013

Robert H. Akins

July 06, 2013
Yesterday I learned of the passing of my friend, Bob Akins. I know Bob as an opposing coach at Waltrip H.S. and friend. His teams were well coached and conducted themselves as gentleman. My parents, players, and fans held Coach Akin in high esteem as he and his teams came to Victoria over the Easter Holidays or Spring Break. We would travel to Houston on alternating years. We all hold those years as very special. Other teams who took part in this exchange were Westbury and Sharpstown.

My heart goes out to Coach Akins's family and all who loved this great man.

The world is a better because of Bob Akins.

Stacy, I am so sorry for your loss. Your Dad was always smiling and never met a stranger. I always enjoyed his visits when came to New Boston. I know you have many special memories of him and your Mom. Hold them close, and let them guide you during this time of sadness.

Though I believe Coach Akins' family members are well aware of the character of Coach, I don't want to let this opportunity pass. I put Coach Akins in the special catagory men&mentors along with Black's Coach Callan. Both were less interested in the final score of the game than how the young men under their charge lived their lives. Callan took us in young adolescence and Akins in late. Some know the story of Coach Akins presenting me with my letter jacket 37 years post earning it. He was like the father I never had who waited patiently for me to return to the living. His passing leaves a great loss in the moment, yet a lasting legacy of love and faith. I hope I'm able to do the same.
