Robert Hankey

One of the last great gentlemen I've ever known. He was a good friend for years, and inspired me with his love of the sea, his expansive love of books and his capacity to recount a memory or tell a story with passion..He had impeccable taste in music and the art, and a fervor for grass-roots government which shaped me. He was a surrogate grandfather to my children who will always hold them in their memories with eidetic detail. One can never replace people like Robert, only enjoy the consolation that they never really die. He was a wonderful man, and I will miss him greatly.

I will truly miss Bob. I had the pure pleasure of working with him for many years while he was a member of the ZBA. He was an absolute gentleman, and I was always glad to see him. Wellfleet has lost the finest kind. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

While most will remember Robert for his activism and concern for Wellfleet, I feel fortunate to have spent time relaxing and talking with him over a beer. He was a walking history lesson and he had a great sense of humor. I will greatly miss those days at the Colony.

Robert was kind and highly intelligent man, impassioned. He cared deeply about others, and was committed to his town, friends, neighbors and the social and environmental issues that were important to him and the Town of Wellfleet. He always took time to stop and chat, ask you about how you were doing, and showed an honest concern and interest in others. He set the bar impossibly high for the rest of us. It was an honor to have known him, spent time with him, and to have been his friend and neighbor.
