Betty Rae Basey Ayers

Betty Ayers Obituary

AYERS Betty Rae Basey Ayers, 82, was called home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 14, 2011. She was born January 2, 1929 in Cleveland, Ohio and was the only child of Fred and Kitty Mae (Murphy) Basey. She was a resident at New Albany Garden and Care Center in Gahanna, Ohio at the time of her death. As a teenager, Betty moved from Cleveland to Dorset and graduated from Dorset High School as valedictorian of her class. After moving to Springfield, Ohio she married Franklin R. Ayers, Sr. and divorced after thirteen years of marriage. Betty was employed as a domestic worker for many years in the Springfield area. She also worked at the Guidance Center where she counseled and advocated for single mothers in Springfield and throughout Ohio. Betty cherished her work as a Founding Director of the Citizens Opportunity Program (COP). While pursuing a degree from Central State University, Betty became a therapist at Mental Health Services of Clark County. Betty was honored by former Governor Richard Celeste in 1987 as one of Ohio's top therapist in the field of mental health. She retired from her profession in 1989. Countless Springfield residents still remember her as one of Ohio's top specialists in the field of mental health and a tireless support system that helped them through difficult times. Betty was a faithful member of Good Shepherd Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio. While at Good Shepherd, she was chairperson of the Women's Ministry, a member of the Senior Saints Ministry and served on the kitchen staff. She was also a former member of Second Baptist Missionary Church in Springfield Ohio where she served on the Mother's Club, the Usher Board, homecoming and women's day committees. She was member of the Urban League Guild and Springfield Chapter of the National Council of Negro Women. As a single mother, she instilled a love of life, faith, education, family and often echoed her favorite community activist, Mary McLeod Bethune's motto, "I leave you love", "a thirst for education" and "leave no one behind". She leaves behind 8 children, Harry (Angela) Basey of Boston, Massachusetts, Mark (Stephanie) of Hayward, California, Kareem Shaheed-Ayers of Woodbridge, Virginia, Adrianne (Kenneth) Leonard of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Randy (Carol) of Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, Judy of Madison, Alabama, Timothy of Englewood, Ohio and Melanie of Columbus, Ohio. In addition to her immediate family, she leaves a special cousin, Mary Ann Cummings-Mitchell of Cincinnati, Ohio; 18 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; a special friend, Clarence Dorn; a host of nieces, nephews; cousins, co-workers and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her aunt Elizabeth Cummings. The family will receive friends 4-6 p.m., Thursday, July 21, 2011 at the Good Shepherd Baptist Church, 1555 Hudson St., Columbus, OH 43211. Funeral service to follow at the church immediately after the visitation period, at 6 p.m. A second family visitation period will held 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Friday, July 22, 2011 at the Second Baptist Missionary Church, 615 S. Wittenberg Ave., Springfield, OH 45506. Interment to follow in Ferncliff Cemetery, Springfield, OH. To the Ayers Family, Your mother was a expression of love and family, she gave a lot of both. Being a member of the Second Baptist Church family, she was very active in our lives from sunday school to the dinners after church services. Thank you for all the kind words you express to me and my family, and as a husband and father, when we met you continue to express that same love and concern...May God continue to keep a warm spot in your heart....Thank you for the time shared... In Springfield, through Mrs Ayer's leadership, love and hard work, the Ayer's family set the standard for academic and athletic excellence. The Ayer's family worked hard in school and in athletics. The beauty of this is, even with a family of her own, Mrs. Ayer's found time to encourage and love all the other children who crossed her path. I was one of those children. Throughout school, undergrad, graduate school and even law school, Mrs. Ayers encouraged me and always told me I could do it. Her approval, encouragement and love meant and always will mean a lot to me. The way she treated you just made you feel you were special and could do whatever you worked at. I hope I can be the type of parent she has been. God Bless you all. Ed Peal

To all of you. We grew up as family, we often mocked in secret when referencing her as "Betty Rae." We called her Aunt Betty publicly, and there are far too many memories to state when I remember our being in Sunday school, the angel choir, etc. at Second Baptist Church and the many times we received her praise, or scoldings, whichever was deemed necessary. The throaty laugh when we said something silly or made little sense. It had been a long time since I last seen her (the time Randy was coaching Ohio State and provided us with tickets at the tournament at U.K.) and we all convened together to watch him and O. State. However, I will always remember her, and her interactions with her children, our families, our lives.
RIP, Aunt Betty.

Betty has been that kind of person, even as far back when we were at 2nd Bapt Sunday School classes together. She was a beautiful person on this earth and now a beautiful angel. What a legacy for you all and all of us. God bless and let all she put into you shine for the world to see.

My Grandmother was beautiful inside and out. I have been blessed to have nothing but fond memories of her. If you ever met her you were guaranteed a smile, kiss, hug, hot meal, or words of wisdom. If you were lucky all of the above. She never met a stranger. Never turned anyone away. Heaven has received an angel. RIP Grandma Betty. We love you!!!
