I know this is almost 13 years before Albert Engel died but I always wondered what happened to this wonderful family that lived across the street from us on Forest Avenue. Joey and Katie were my best friends and I recall sitting on the front steps waving as they moved to a new house in Norton Shores. I was so sad and missed this family so much. It was so kind of Katie´s mom to invite me to Katie´s birthday party after she moved. It was so much fun! Now here it is so many years later and I turned 70 this year, I still have such good memories of you all. I hope you are all well and pray that we will all see each other again-whether on earth or in heaven.
Here is a picture of my mom who passed during COVID. The other is of my husband Stan and myself this fall traveling through the UP.

Still missing you, dad, but glad you don't have to go through the craziness of the past few years and, especially now. If there is an afterlife, I hope you are all playing a great game of bridge! Miss you.....

Albert was one of my favorite cousins and a great inspiration to me growing up. he was 11 years older than me. I remember how kind and humble he was. He had so many great qualities and influenced so many.

Dad,
It's been a year today since you left us. You would be happy to know that we all think of you quite often and when we get together, we talk about you and how wonderfully you affected each of our lives...you must know that we still laugh, cry, and miss you greatly. We are all still 'around-ge-fooling' and remain even closer as a family. We're taking care of mom.... ooh dad, I love you so much..... your Katie

Prayers and thoughts to the Engel family as the one year mark approaches. Working for you both was a privilege. Thank you for the opportunity. I briefly helped out with whatever you needed at your home in Beaufort in 2011. You were the nicest couple to work for.

So many memories of a great man and a great family. New Years Eve football, diving off the dock, the wall of pictures, the laughter. Mr. Engel - you were one loved man!

Dear Eloise, Joe and family, I happened to meet with your old neighbor Larry Flaherty yesterday and mentioned that I had attended the funeral. He had wanted to attend but was unable, but was delighted that I could give him a copy of the funeral service program. The funeral service was memorable, and the display of photos was wonderful. My sympathies to all.

I'm sorry for your loss, Mrs Engel. Your husband was instrumental in having my son brought back to Muskegon when he was illegally taken to Az back in 1964. I never had a chance to THANK him. Now, with you in his place, I say: THANK YOU, MR. ENGEL! THANK YOU!

To my friend Joe: My condolences on the passing of your father. As I read through his scroll of life, I realized that he was part of the greatest generation to whom we owe great gratitude. I also realized that you and your family (and your boys in particular) are a wonderful legacy. Although I never had the privilege of meeting your dad, I suspect that my knowing you gives me a glimpse of what your dad was like and that the world is a better place because he was here. May his legacy live on.

Dear Engel Family,
Having grown up in Muskegon, I was familiar with Judge Engel's name. He wrote some memories of his youth in a GR Press article a few years ago that I thought was very poignantly written. My sympathies.

my dear cousin Albert was an inspiration to me, as I remember him coming to our house in Lansing when he was 22 years old, my mother Grace was 33. and my dad Arthur was 44 I was 11. He played Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin by memory. He was always kind and approachable in all of our many conversations. I gave him a scrapbook collection of my father's that he had compiled of his father Albert Sr. my sympathy to Eloise and all the family

Dear Eloise and kids-
My sympathies are with you. Judge Engel was a great man. He instilled in me many of his great qualities, including patience and compassion for all. As his first law clerk, he took me under his wing and treated me as a member of the family. I will always remember the great times in the Upper Peninsula sitting on the beaches of Lake Superior, after a hard days work,
watching the sunset.

Dear Eloise and Family--What a loss. The Judge set the standard for what it means to be a lawyer and a jurist. Fair, intelligent, diligent, caring, funny--I can't imagine a better person to have as a mentor in the legal profession. Thanks for the wonderful gatherings at your home and for the great year we spent in Grand Rapids in 1983-84. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Dan and Cathy Kobil

Mrs. Engel and family -
Judge Engel was a gentleman, through and through -- brimming with curiosity, enthusiasm and fundamental decency. Clerking for him was an honor, a privilege, hard work, and just a whole lot of fun. I don't see his spirit resting in peace -- I think he'll be revelling in peace. God bless him.

Dear Eloise, Joe, Jim, Kate and Mary -
I am very sorry to hear of your loss. While I worked as a law clerk for only one year with the Judge, I came to know that he was an exceptional human being, a thoughtful and careful jurist, and a wonderful mentor and employer. I learned much from him - objectivity in legal assesssment, the importance of understanding details before making a judgment, and care in listening to all points of view. I don't think I ever worked harder in my life before that year with Judge Engel, but he gave me the opportunity to participate in his work, and he inspired us to do our best. He provided a wonderful experience to many young, aspiring lawyers; and he did so with energy and attention to us as individuals. Judge Engel also welcomed me (and my fellow law clerks) into your family. My fondest memories are of his many personal interests, his good humor and caring nature, his love of family, and his genuine care for his clerks and staff. The year I spent with Judge Engel was one of the most enjoyable of my life. And he helped me in many ways, and I will always be thankful to him. I send my heartfelt condolences to you all. With deepest sympathy, Ed Krauland

Dear Eloise and family, As you already know, the Judge (he'll always be "the Judge" to me!) was a great man. He taught me a great deal - both legal and otherwise. I know that his memory is held dear to so many people he touched over the years. I'm sorry that I won't be in town on Thursday to attend the service but my thoughts will be with you. Best, Barrie Loeks

I only had one blood uncle and was blessed that it was Albert. As a child, I enjoyed his puckish sense of humor and as an adult, I was able to have many conversations with him about a wide variety of topics. He was a joy to have in my life and I will miss him more than I can express.
My love and hugs to Eloise and my cousins...I know how much you will miss him.
Love,
Anne
