Jack Sanderson Obituary

SANDERSON, JACK CLINTON Fremont Jack Clinton Sanderson was born to George Harrison and Frances Elizabeth (Nixon) (Proper) Sanderson August 2, 1930, near Chesaning, MI. He grew up on a farm in Fowlerville, MI where he excelled in track in High School and also played the tuba. Jack is survived by wife, Lois (Riker) Sanderson, of Fremont, MI and by six children: Tanya Beth (Cliff Clark) Sanderson of Newaygo, MI, Jackie Lynn (Michael Cole) Sanderson of Sedalia, CO, Kurt Lee Sanderson and his wife, Susan Kay (Morgan) of Fremont, MI, Kay Tee (Sanderson) Rottman and her husband, Alan of Hudsonville, MI, John Scott Sanderson and his wife, Amanda (Heath) of Walker, MI, and Kristin Jo (Sanderson) Watson and her husband, Todd of Bergheim, TX. Jack has been blessed with nine grandchildren, Derek (Taylor), Brent, and Jared Rottman; Bryce, Carson, Luke, Hallie (Michael), and Kirsten Sanderson; and Ryan (Cris) Loughridge; and one great-granddaughter, Madelyn. Jack leaves one surviving sister, Lola Jean Thomas of Grand Rapids. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Gale, Leonard G. of Vero Beach, FL, and Marlo Edwin of Alachua, FL; half brother, Harley Proper of Edwardsburg, MI; and half sister, Myrle Robinson. Jack graduated from Michigan State University in 1952, a legacy of Spartan pride that was followed by several of his children and grandchildren. He started teaching vocational agriculture when he met Lois Riker. They were united in marriage June 14, 1953 and enjoyed over 60 years together. Jack was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served two years in Germany. Upon his return, he earned his Masters degree and taught for five years in Bath, MI before moving to Fremont where he was the vocational agriculture teacher and FFA advisor for 28 years. He enjoyed farm visits to see student's projects and the yearly FFA conventions. During that time, he also served as superintendent of the junior livestock program at the Michigan State Fair, Chairman of the Michigan State Fair, served on the board of the Newaygo County Fair, was chosen as the Fremont Jaycee "Young Man of the Year," served on the Sheridan Township board, and served on many political and education committees at local and state levels. He was selected as an alternate at the national convention in Detroit in 1980. Jack was a founder of the Newaygo County Employees Credit Union. A very giving and trusting man, Jack would be the first one to lend a tool, his car, money or anything that a friend needed and he never met a stranger. Jack was passionate about his hobbies and interests, and put fun as the top priority of his life. On his farm, he involved his family in raising horses, pigs, cattle, and an incredible garden that supplied a roadside stand on "Sanderson Farm". He also grew produce for Gerber and for local grocery stores and farmers markets. Jack built a camper and took his family on extended road trips across the country and often over the borders each year, and encouraged his children to travel as exchange students and also hosted several exchange students of his own over the years: Hugo Tilly from Chile, Birgit Sobol from Germany, and Claes Uvesten from Sweden. Jack kept his pilot license current over the years and owned a little plane that he called "the Red Baron". Before retiring from teaching, Jack started to build his Standardbred horse herd for his second career. He trained and drove the harness horses for many years across tracks in Michigan. He and Lois used their winnings to travel even more, and always made plenty of new friends along the way. After racing and encountering several leg injuries, he built Meadowbrook horse carts at his farm and enjoyed delivering them to their new owners, which he called his "new friends". A celebration of Jack's life will be held in this summer on Sunday, June 1 2014, from 2-5 PM at Camp Newaygo. Please consider remembering Jack by donating to the Fremont Future Farmers of America (FFA), Fremont High School, 5421 S. Warner, Fremont, MI 49412. Their programs will support leadership experiences, hands-on projects, and field trips. Friends may share memories and condolences online at www.crandellfh.com.

Please know of my sadness on learning of the death of Jack Sanderson. He was my FFA/agriculture teacher for 3-years in Bath. While I was blessed to have some wonderful people as teachers I have, over the years, remembered "Mr. Sanderson" as a special teacher in so many ways. I remember, for example, a late-night outing to Owosso where he drove 5 of his students to a school event. I also remember getting ready for Farmer's Week at MSU (I raised pigs as my project). He was always a gentleman, never raised his voice, always patient, understanding and a great mentor. It was only recently that I learned that he resided in Fremont. Unfortunately, before I could make my way to see him I learned of his passing.

To his family I extend my sincere condolences. I could not have asked for a better teacher than Mr. Jack Sanderson!

My connection with the family has been thru Kristry and Todd. We did have the opportunity of meeting Jack and his wife on one if their trips to Texas. What a delight and enthusiasm. It sounds like he lived life and left his fingerprints behind. My sympathies to the family I'm sure you will miss a great Dad.

Fox family sympathies to the Sanderson family. My parents loved spending time with Jack and Lois and Kurt, et al, at the Methodists' breakfasts on Saturday mornings. I remember when the Sandersons first moved to Fremont in the early 60's and lived in a house on Darling Street next door to my gramma's. To me, your family was as cool as the Kennedy's. Jack had the same charisma as JFK. What a great life, what a great family. He influenced so many, he will be missed by so many. The world is a lesser place without him in it. Our condolences.

Sorry to Jack's family for their loss. Jack was a giant among educators in Newaygo County. He sincerely believed in public education and the benefit of serving all students regardless of the student's position in life. I got to know Jack starting in 1972 when I came to the Career-Tech Center in Fremont as a teacher. He was a mentor to many of us and believed in serving “in the best interest of students,” that I carry on as a school board member at NCRESA to this day. May God bless him for he was one of a kind.

In the fall of 1961 I brought my future wife to my father's farm on 64th St., south of Fremont. As it happened Jack came by with horse and buggy and gave my (then) girlfriend a ride. I took a picture of her in the buggy with Jack, a big smile on his face; it has long been one of my favorite photos.

The world lost a wonderful man, father, grandfather and great teacher Mr. Sanderson was one of those teacher you could never forget, he would never judge anyone and was willing to help you with anything you needed. He could make you laugh even if you were not in the mood to laugh. He made learning fun and it is hard to find someone like that. He was the one teacher that my dad had him his first year of teaching at Fremont and I was lucky enough to have him as a teacher for all 4 years and my younger brother had him for his last year of teaching. I think I speak for so many of his students when I say he taught all of us in one way or another and made differences in our lives. Mr. Sanderson I am sure you are on a buggy behind a horse up there right now and you will be missed by all who knew him.

Many of Jack's family, Christmas 2013

So sorry for your loss. I met Jack when we stopped by the farm to ask if he would show us around. My granfather Ed Gebben built the farm in his youth and sold it to the Sanderson family. He was very gracious and showed us around. God bless

I never had the opportunity to take a class at Fremont HS with Mr. Sanderson, but always felt he was a class guy, with a quick smile. A fond memory while growing up was when Kevin & I visited the Sanderson farm enjoying our time with Kurt & Jackie. My thoughts and prayers are with the Sanderson family.

We could not have asked for a better uncle. We always felt like immediate family when we visited, cause he put us to work. John 4:35 talks about farmers. "and the fields are already white unto harvest" God needs a few good farmers to take care of his fields.

I was in Mr. Sandersons VoAg class through high school in the basement. My sympathy to all of you. Its always sad to see them go but neither schould we wish them back. Read John 14:27 and claim it for your very own.
