Jacob Lindhout Obituary

LINDHOUT, JACOB "JACK" Las Vegas formerly of Comstock Park Jacob "Jack" Lindhout, of Las Vegas, NV, formerly of Comstock Park, MI, passed away on October 6, 2012, three minutes shy of his 81st birthday. He was born on October 7, 1931 in Fort Myers, FL to the late Gilbert and Sophia (Vander-Muelen) Lindhout. Jack enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 17 and served his country proudly as a Corporal during the Korean War. During his service to his country, he earned two Purple Heart Medals, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, the Combat Infantry Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal. On April 23, 1955 Jack married the love of his life, Frances "Sue" Mahaffy. They made their home in Comstock Park, MI where they raised their three children, Cindy, Debbie, and Mike. In 1983, Jack and Sue moved to Las Vegas to "retire". During his life Jack worked in many professions including owning his own Union 76 service station, working in management in various companies, being a shift boss in Las Vegas poker rooms, and what he always said was his favorite job, driving truck. Many people remember him most for his outstanding career driving racecars. Jack started his racing career in the 1950's at Berlin Raceway and the Grand Rapids Speedrome in Comstock Park, MI. Over the years he competed in the jalopies, super modifieds, midgets and USAC sprint cars. Jack won at least 200 feature events and gathered three season championships at the Grand Rapids Speedrome, two in the coupes and one in the midgets. Over the years he had won many special races, Mid-Season Championships and the like, but the biggest win got away as he once was leading the Oswego Classic with 24 laps to go when something went wrong. Jack raced at over 50 different tracks in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, New York and Ontario, over a span of four decades. In 1994, he was inducted into the Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame. Jack also enjoyed classic cars. He had previously owned a 1935 cherry red Ford Coupe and 1953 Hudson Hornet that he restored. Jack and Sue were former members of the Charioteers Classic Car Club of Southern Nevada and they enjoyed attending various car shows with their son Mike. He was an avid sports fan of almost all sports, but his favorite one to watch was NASCAR racing. Jack could be found cheering on his favorite racers with his daughter Cindy every weekend. In June he and Sue hosted a family dream vacation by taking their whole family, children and grandchildren, to Charlotte, NC - the heart of NASCAR. Jack's greatest joy in life was his family. He was a devoted husband, dad, and grandpa. His grandchildren lovingly called him Bompa. Nothing made him happier than having happy children and grandchildren. His playful teasing, loving laughter, and devilish smile will forever be in the hearts of his family and his many friends. Jack was a friend to all and he will be deeply missed by all those that knew and loved him. Jack is survived by devoted wife of 57 years, Sue; his loving daughters, Cindy Lindhout of Henderson, NV and Debbie Perkins of Kalkaska, MI; his cherished grandchildren, Molly Shepherd of Las Vegas, NV, Katie Perkins, Jacob Perkins, Emily Perkins, and Bobby Perkins all of Kalkaska; his dear daughter-in-law, Therese Reddy of Eugene, OR; his dear sister-in-law, Harriet Lindhout of Panama City, FL; his step-granddaughters, Natalie Shepherd of Henderson, NV and Amber Shepherd of Greenville, OH; his precious step-great-grandchildren, Christina, Jaden, and Bryce; and many, many close and dear friends and extended family. He was preceded in death by his son, Mike Lindhout who passed away in 1998 and his brother Bill "Rusty" Lindhout who passed away in 2010. A memorial service honoring Jack will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Comstock Park Congregational Church, 62 Lamoreaux Dr., with visitation being held one hour prior to the service. Pastor Dick Woodward, Jr. will be officiating. Memorial contributions may be made in Jack's memory to the American Cancer Society. Condolences may be left online at www.wolfeoneill.com.

Dad, it's hard to believe it's been nine years since we last talked. You remain in my thoughts and my heart, everyday. You were the best dad I could've asked for. I've always been so proud of you, and still am today. I can't wait until we meet again. I love you, Dad!

October 3, 2013

Dear Jack, today I received a birthday phone call from Sue. We talked about how my birthday and yours were only 3 days apart (and a few years, as you were so much older than I) and how you would call and wish me Happy Birthday and then on Oct 7th I would call you. That was something that we did for the better part of 40 years. I miss hearing you "tease" me about getting old and your mischievous sense of humor. Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers as the first anniversay of your passing approaches and also your 82nd birthday. Sue, Cindy and Debbie have shown amazing strength during this past year. You would be so very proud of them. R.I.P. dear friend and know that you are missed very much and thought about with love.

I met him at Oswego Speedway back in the 60's and what a great driver and person!!! Fans don't realize he almost won the 1967 Classic when his car broke while leading. I spoke with him several years ago when we were organizing the Old Timers Reunion at Oswego. We talked for about 45 minutes and what a thrill it was for me. My sincere sympathies to his family.

As a young race fan at Oswego Speedway, Jack was one of my favorite drivers. I first met him back at the 1967 International Classic when he drove the Behnke Trucking Special #60, I love the car and went over to the pits after the race and introduced myself to him at the ripe old age of 14-LOL! Every time he came after that I would stop by and talk with him. He was a real nice guy, one of my racing heroes.
I am currently one of the promoters for the Oswego Speedway Old-Timers Reunion, I have added Jack's name to our Heavenly Heroes Page- http://www.oswegospeedwayoldtimers.com/Our-Heavenly-Heroes.html

My sincerest sympathies to the entire Lindhout Family.

Jack drove Bud Van Unen's Offy midget quite often in the late 70's. I worked with this car and found Jack to be a delight to have driving the car. He was competitive and never, ever did stupid things on the track. He was a pleasure to be around.

All of us in motor sports will miss him.

I miss you so much already, Dad. I hope you know how much I love you, and how much you meant to me. There will be a big hole in my life without you. But I know you are with God, and not suffering anymore. Give Mike, Rick, and my grandparents a hug for me. I hope to see you all again, some day. And, yes, in the meantime, Deb and I will take good care of Mom.
Love Always,
