A great Loss
August 11, 2013
Lorraine and John, we are sorry for your loss. From the stories you told about your dad, Lorraine, I know he was a special man. We are thinking of you. Shelli and Bill Otten

My condolences to your whole family. I have so many fond memories of your Dad and his twinkling blue eyes, so full of life, always so interested in engaging the people around him. Your Dad and Mom used to come to our house for dinner parties and I would love to hear your Dad's stories and laughter and your Mom's beautiful accent. I recall our families chartered a bus to a Michigan-Michigan State football game at The Big House and MSU won ( my favorite) and I would have been more excited except our dads were so glum - true blue all the way! We have your parents at the cottage on some of our Super 8 movies, too! Your Dad was always the gentleman and I am forever grateful for how attentive he remained to my father post - stroke. May they both rest in peace. Maureen Mika Eberly

My condolences to you in the death of your father and grandfather. He gave me the opportunity to clerk for him in 1990 and 1991, and that clerkship qualifies as one of the most rewarding experiences of my legal career to date, due in large part to Judge Miles's kindness, good humor, great stories, and honest, hard-working example. The worst epithet he could apply to a person, by his own account, was "phony," and he was the exact opposite, an honest public servant of high integrity.

Though small in stature, Judge Miles was a giant among those in the legal field. A gentleman, a scholar , and an outstanding jurist. His life story reads like a novel. He was also an outstanding example of " The Greatest Generation", the vets who served to protect our freedoms in WWII. He will be sorely missed by those of us who were privileged to know him and appear before him in court. Well done Judge Miles, you served your country well. John F. Salan, AUSA Retired and Past District Governor of Rotary District 6290.

Dear family,
My sincerest condolences on the loss of Judge Miles. I was privileged to work for him as a law clerk and will never forget his kindness, energy, knowledge, and unwavering professionalism. What a respected lawyer and judge he was! My thoughts and prayers as you grieve his loss.

Wendell was a friend of our father Judge Raymond L. Smith and also our friend. We honor him for a life well lived in public service and as a very honorable man in private life. A life well lived. Condolences to the family. Tom and Julie Carey and family.
