Jason G. Defrenn's father said the military gave his son the excitement he had sought as a boy while hunting and fishing. "When he was young, he had a spirit of wanting to be a hero," Garth DeFrenn said. "He was one of those kids who wanted adventure." Defrenn, 34, of Barnwell, S.C., died Feb. 2 when his helicopter went down in Taji. He was assigned to Fort Hood. DeFrenn, a nine-year Army veteran, was on his second tour of duty in Iraq. He had been flying military helicopters for approximately five years. "My son was fearless but he was thoughtful," said Garth DeFrenn. "I think all soldiers are like that - fearless and thoughtful. They do something we can't do." After learning of her husband's death, his pregnant wife, Jenny, was taken to a hospital, where doctors worked to induce labor. Christopher Andrew DeFrenn was born Feb. 6. He also is survived by three other children, Alex, 15, Jessica, 10, and Michael, 5. "Alexander looks like him, acts like and smells like him. Jessica has her father's heart," said his father. "Michael has his father's spirit. He is a warrior and wants to grow up to be a soldier, too."

I never knew you, but I think about you and Keith a lot. I flew with Keith in Korea and went to Iraq one year after that fateful day and I feel guilty every day that Im still here and two good men with families are not. It really hurts me still to this day. I just want you to know that I have not, and will never forget about you. - Alan

Jason I didn't have the honor of meeting you but at one time was Keith's crewchief and friend. Groundhog day is always a long day around here for both of you guys. As I wrote in Keith page....runway is clear, hanger door is open....just leave the logbook on my desk. Curtis

To the family and friends of Chief Warrant Officer Jason G. Defrenn:
It has truly been my honor to sign Jason's guest book these past few years. Unfortunately, due to complications from my Multiple Sclerosis, this may be the last message I'm able to write. Please forgive me and know that Jason will always be remembered in my home.
With love and respect ~ Peggy

Was just made aware of Jason's death and can't find the words to express how sorry I am. I served as Jason's first company commander when he arrived in Hawaii and found him to be polite, engaged, well informed, mature, STRONG and clearly ready for greatness. No doubt he fulfilled his potential by becoming an Apache Attack Helicopter pilot. God Bless Jason, his Family and all those who knew him. Just found this out. He was a great leader and human to have known. He taught me many things when I came in as an E-2. He'll never be forgotten
