Karina S. Lau Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Pfc. Karina Lau sang and played clarinet and saxophone, and won awards for music and math. She dreamed of returning to school after her military service and someday setting up her own music shop. "I prayed for her every day telling her to be careful," said her mother, Ruth Lau, of Livingston, Calif. "She said she was safe. We never expected that anything would happen to her." Lau, 20, was one of 16 soldiers killed in the Nov. 2 downing of a helicopter carrying troops home on leave. Lau attended the University of Pacific on a music scholarship before joining the Army in January 2002. She received training as a radio operator at Fort Hood during boot camp before she was deployed to Iraq at the beginning of the war. Just a few hours before boarding the helicopter, Lau sent an e-mail to her half-sister, Martha Rivera. "Don''t worry," it read. "I''ll be careful."

I did not have the privilege of knowing PFC Lau. I am retired military and sometimes I review the records and memorials of those that gave their life. I feel it's important that they are never forgotten or taken for granted. I read, imagine the lives such as her dream of having a music shop of her own and pray for the family. Her loss, and your loss, is all of our loss. May God bless you.

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Karina S. Lau US Army Private 1st Class. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

Dear Karina,
Your passing was the most devastating I have experienced. As your music teacher 5th through 8th grade in band and choir I watched you flourish. You were enthralled with Phantom of the Opera and sat next to me when we took a VIA bus trip to SF to see it. You received the Eighth Grade Award for Band. You returned for visits to sing standards and you sang better than I ever had, as I told you then. On 9/11/13 at Livingston Middle School, this is the 10th year after your passing, we will have a dedication of our music performed by band and choir to your memory. It won't be Judy Garland, your most recent favorite, but something fitting; Call to Valor by the band and Imagine by the choir. We have a new principal who is very supportive of music and appointed me to announce the dedication of the music in your memory. I think of you often, I thank you for serving our country, and I feel honored to have been your teacher. With love, Ms. Whittaker

Kerina, hey. sorry its the first time ive publicly spoken to you or even acknowladged you. thats my twisted way of thinking. its me jones. remember we joined the same day, jan. 7 2001. you are a 31 fox, i am a 31 uniform. remember sgt taylor, we used to call harry potter? good times. i do want to say, when drill sgt manning, in basic, had you stand and sing the national anthem, that first week or so, you almost had me in tears. deffinently goosebumbs though. i know atwater is 15 minutes away from atwater, i want you to know i am proud to have been alive to know you for the time that i did. thank you for your service, and as an American, a soldier, a veteran, and a friend, i dedicate my freedom to you, and the countless others, whose sacrafice paved the way for the freedom we happily enjoy today.
Spc Jones,
over and out.

I miss you so much, I promised myself that I would never forget all that you thaught me, I admired you soooo much, as a musician, a student, a singer and a loving daughter. There is no one in this world that can take your spot... no one who will watch musicals with me, walk around the block with, go on band trips with. Six years ago I gave up on music, cause you wouldn't be there for me... Cause you weren't there to encourage me, you left me with so many memories and dreams, and I miss your laugh, your smile, your voice... there's so much to say, so much I never got to tell you...

Tribute to the Veteran

Did they really die in vain?
So many good lives lost
While people live a life of freedom
Without a clue of the massive cost
Blood and tears are paid by us
The patriots of our time
Lives are lost so quickly
On the battle lines
We sacrifice without thanks
From those of whom we serve
We die alone on the front lines
In way No human deserves
We go away to far-off lands
And fight with every ounce
We travel through cities and towns
Whose names we can’t pronounce
“Support Our Troop” is a popular slogan
But do know what we’ve seen
When you see the colors half-mast
Do you really know what it means?
We are the soldiers past and present
With pride we fight for your rights
We do it all without any hesitation
Without regard for our own life
So the next time you see a veteran
Please take them to the side
Give them a hug and thank them
For the service they did provide

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Karina was on my husband's team. He actually drove her to the airfield that tragic day. Her loss took a huge toll on him because he was suppose to bring his team back home alive and for the longest time he felt like he failed at his mission. Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

To Karina's family - You are always in our thoughts, please know that you are not alone in your grief. We loved Karina and we think of her often, with the same feelings of love and sorrow that we know you are going through. We remember the last few days before she left for UOP college, that she stayed with us, enjoying spending time with her friend, our daughter, Selena. It made us happy to see the girls having fun, going out, staying up late and just being young. We all miss her very much.

Karina was just one of the brave soldiers that was in Iraq representing our beautiful country of USA. I also had a niece in Iraq, which just recently came back safely (thank our dear GOD). Karina thankyou for your braveness for everyone here. It's because of You that we live our lifes in safety. Thankyou for being such a wonderful beautiful person, and hopefully with time your family's pain will ease with God beside them all.

Please accept my deepest, deepest sympathy to all of you.

I did not personally know Karina, but I have read so much about her since her death that I feel that I did know this wonderful soldier who sacrificed so much for her country. My prayers are with this family in rememberance of this special treasure that you lost far too soon.
