Margery McEown Obituary


McEOWN, Margery Muriel The daughter of John and Elsie Victoria Halliday was born in Winnipeg in 1924. She leaves her loving and devoted husband of 64 years John, Victoria, son Jeffrey Toronto, daughter Catherine Cincinnati and grandchildren Michael and Laura McEown, Gregory, Jessica and Ian Beckman. Margery attended Daniel McIntyre Collegiate and United College in Winnipeg. She was a member of the Junior League in Battle Creek Michigan, Winnipeg and New York City. Always active in her church and community she worked for several years as a volunteer at Abilities Unlimited, a school on Long Island N.Y. for severely handicapped children. She also served as the coordinator of a large volunteer program at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York city for teaching English to foreign students. In later years she was an active member of the Outreach Mission program of First Presbyterian Church in Naples, Florida. An avid supporter of the performing and visual arts Margery was a member of the guilds of the Metropolitan Opera and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She was an enthusiastic follower of virtually all performances on Broadway as well as those at the Philharmonic Center in Naples, Florida. Margery, a professional model for some years, was widely acclaimed for her appearance by a great number of her acquaintances and for the beauty of her being by those who knew her well. Her friendly smile, compassionate nature, listening skills and non judgemental attitude brought her many close friends. A Celebration of her life, to which all of her friends are cordially invited, will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, March 4 at the Victoria Golf Club. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Victoria Epilepsy & Parkinson's Society at 813 Darwin Street, Victoria. 618861

Margery's smile will always be a light in our hearts. She had a wonderful combination of gentleness and strength. A great sense of humour. Thank you Margery for being such an important part of our lives.

Such a lovely, gracious person, I wanted to be just like her as a child - maybe still as an adult. I will miss her.
My many trips to visit Margery and John in New York City and all of their support in graduate school are just memories I cherish still to this day.
Good journey to you Margery and our prayers and support, along with warm hugs to John, Jeff, and Cath and their families - I know you will miss her greatly.
