Colleagues at Freddie Mac - the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. - remembered Mark Schurmeier as a soothing presence.

When hammering out business deals as director of strategic engineering, "he was just very calm all the time, always smiling," said Usha Chaudhary, a vice president at Freddie Mac.

Schurmeier, 44, a former Wheaton resident, oversaw 50 Freddie Mac employees.

He expressed a certain unease about his trips to the World Trade Center, said his father, Jerry.

"He didn't like it too much," his father said. "He just commented that it wasn't his favorite place to go."

Schurmeier was a 1975 graduate of Wheaton North High School, where he developed an interest in musical theater as a senior and landed leading roles in "Hello, Dolly!" "Godspell" and other student productions.

But he decided to pursue a career in business like his father, a retired investment portfolio manager, and received a master's degree in business administration from American University in Washington.

At the U.S. Treasury Department he served on a three-person team that developed a system allowing online and telephone investment in treasury securities, his father said. He joined Freddie Mac about 10 years ago.

He was a resident of McLean, Va., and was attending a financial technology conference on the 106th floor of the World Trade Center's north tower when it was slammed by American Airlines Flight 11.

He leaves behind his wife, Ayako, and son, Mason, 5.

Not sure what to say?

Mark - I'm thinking about you today - 19 years later. And remembering you as my Theta Chi Big Brother. Your spirit and smile live on. We miss you!

Mark, you were well loved, and now very much missed. Thank you for being my friend.
Love you Brother.

Mark, all of your Theta Chi fraternity brothers are thinking of you on this anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy. We remember you as a great friend -- always in good spirits and fun. Bless you and your family.

What a gift Mark was to this world. In high school, his many talents made it clear that he could have been or done anything in this life. But what makes him unforgettable to me is that, whatever he did, he did with kindness. Thank you, Mark. The presence of your kindness lives on.

Remembering you today.

Thinking of Mark's family today. Mark and I attended school together in Wheaton, IL. I remember the friendly, smiling, funny, tall guy from grade school thru high school. It's just sad he was taken from this life so young and tragically. I wish peace and love to you all.

I rode my motorcycle representing Mark in the 9/11 Foundation Memorial Ride. It was very emotional for me as it was for just under 3000 of us each representing with honor a victim of 9/11. Bob Bell Nashua, NH

I never knew Mark or his family. But I live in Galena, Illinois, the county seat of Jo Daviess County, the northwestern-most county of Illinois. Yesterday I went hiking at the Schurmeier Forest, a beautiful area of wilderness that has been preserved under the auspices of the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation in memory of Mark. This incredibly peaceful place is several miles southeast of the small town of Elizabeth. It includes about 2 miles of hiking trails. For one trail, there is a...

My mind cannot conjure an image of Mark without a smile on his face. Even today, his smile, his humor, and his good hearted friendship make the pains of the 9/11 tragedy easier to bear. Thank you Mark for touching all our lives and for the continuing joy your memory brings.
