Elizabeth Hill Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" Hill
Jan. 25, 1925 - Nov. 19, 2010

Ah Mom, I will miss you deeply. With a Masters Degree in the Humanities, she touched so many students lives as their teacher at Mariner High. A world traveler, you had such an insight to many different cultures. Mom was a Radar Operator in the R.A.F. for her native country of England in WWII. During night training in a pitch black field she ran into something, she said, "excuse me" and at that point the cow mooed. Mom met my dad in Berlin as part of the Occupation Forces. Thoughtful and intuitive, she taught me well. I honor you. Your son, Mark.

I'm 70 now, and I still remember her so fondly. She was my English teacher in the 8th, 11th and 12th grades, and remained my friend well into adulthood.

Thanks Mrs. Hill for the fun in class. I was lucky enough to have her in Junior High and high school. I often relate to my family of the bond we shared. You will be missed. Rich Littleton, Ephrata, wa

I’m yet another who had Mrs. Hill in 8th and then again in 11th grade. Always classy, she changed the way I approached language. With her frequent comments on my papers to “improve your handwriting”, I suspect she had an inkling that I was composing them on the morning school bus ride. She lives on in many hearts. Our thoughts are with your family in your time of loss.

I was one of the lucky ones to have Mrs. Hill as a teacher at Snohomish Jr. High, then "moved" with her for two more years of English and Literature at Snohomish High School. She's the one who learnt me to right so good!

Her passionate and free-spirited approach inspires me to this day. I gave her a hard time, but it was just my "little boy" telling her how much I loved her.

Be at peace, Mrs. Hill. You led a wonderful and meaningful life!

I too was blessed to have " Mrs. Hill"
as a teacher twice in Snohomish with Keith and Kathi and Renee and our classmates (I'll bet you're cringing at that one !)
More so, I'm Blessed to have had you, Betty as my friend, guide and molder of my thinking and expression.
The likes of "Little Rat Rotten Hood" and "Candy's Dandy but Liquor's Quicker" stay with me forever!
I so look forward to our next meeting so that I can hear the rest of the stories. You are Loved !
I look forward to your "margin notes"

Mrs. Hill was my advisor 1974-1977. Thanks to her I graduated from high school. She was one of the best teachers I had, she made you feel important. She took me out to dinner after graduation which meant a lot to me, she was special. Peace be to her family.

Another Mariner faculty meeting - mid eighties. Administrator instruction method of dealing with the "little buggers". Again, Betty popped to attention and said, "Are you able to define little bugger? If not, I will be happy to provide the appropriate definition."

Mariner faculty mid eighties: We had just been ordered to "do something". Betty popped to attention and said, "I won't do it, and you can't make me". The order was withdrawn.

Thank you Mrs. Hill for making English fun! I had a blast in your class and loved how you taught us to learn instead of just memorizing things and reciting them back. You were by far the best english teacher that I ever had. And to your family, my prayers are with you.

I, too, have really fond memories of her and of being in her class. I remember when she came back from a weekend and had dyed her hair this copper color to cover the gray...she asked our class how we liked it, and I said out loud, "Little Orphan Granny...." Without missing a beat, she replied, "Yes, well Mr. Ummel, I shall hold onto that dear endorsement until your own ebony hair turns to snow or until you figure out how to raise your grade above a 'B'. I shall, no doubt, be waiting a long time either way." Beautiful. As a high school English teacher for 18 years now, I have stolen and used that comeback more than once. Thanks, Mrs. Hill--With Love, Jon Ummel

I was also fortunate enough to have Mrs. Hill for a teacher both in junior high and as a senior in high school. She was one of my favorite teachers; always caring, approachable, and supportive. She wrote me a glowing letter of recommendation for nursing school. Keith said it best; she truly brought class to the classroom.

Mrs. Hill was my advisor from 1980-1983 and my AP English instructor in 1984. I still have my papers with her red markings all over them and many happy memories. Now I'm trying to instill the love of writing and literature in my own students. I'm sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you.

Mrs. Hill was an inspiration to me, always kind, with wry humor and a learning challenging spirit. We used to come into the room and say "It's the Betty Hill Show" in our terrible theatrical english accent, and she seemed to love it. She instilled a life long joy in the Humanities for me, my sisters and so many friends. I wish I had taken the time to let her know how important to me she was. Take solace in the fact that she touched so many lives worldwide.

Mrs. Hill was a wonderful teacher. I had her in the 8th grade at Snohomish Jr. High, and then again as a Jr. and a Senior. I not only remember her fondly from school, we kept in contact for many years. She attended one of my book signings, and was always supportive of my writing. She will be missed.

Last week I stumbled upon high school literature class essays while emptying a file drawer. I've spent the better part of my worklife writing and analyzing the writing of others. Mrs. Hill's lengthy and thoughtful comments on my essays show me a teacher who had a keen mind balanced with the kindness to be gentle with young and proud writers. Such a gift you gave to me and countless others. God Bless.

Mrs. Hill was my favorite teacher in high school. She was always a joyful inspiration to me. She will always hold a tender spot in my heart for all her kindnesses and generosity. May her family find peace and comfort during this sorrowful time.

Mrs. Hill was one of my favorite teachers. She once said in class that while most words have synonyms, no two words always mean exactly the same thing, and only that thing. This has kept me thinking about words for 26 years. Also, she was my advisor, and talked me into taking a physics class in 10th grade because it fit in my schedule. "What's physics?" I asked her. "I have no idea," she said. "It will be an adventure." Thanks, Mrs. Hill! You'll be missed.

I fondley remember Mrs Hill. She taught English Literature in my Senior of High Schoo back in 1969-70. I remember reading Beowolf and the Lord of the Flys. May God's comfort you at this time of loss
of your beloved mother.

I remember Betty as a great lady and wonderful teacher during my school days in Snohomish. Very caring, engaging and sincere, she encouraged us to read more and reflect on different perspectives; in short, she inspired us to think. She brought class to the classroom.

My teacher in 8th grade and as a Senior, Mrs. Hill taught me iambic pentameter when she learned I liked writing free verse. I loved her. So sorry for your loss.
