Richard Reed Obituary

REED, RICHARD WAYNE "DICK" - Of Clarklake, MI, age 69, passed away at Allegiance Hospice Sunday, December 12, 2010, after a long and hard fought 7 plus year battle with cancer. Surviving are his loving, devoted wife of 36 years, Gretchen; daughters, Tami Reed, Shelley (Ken) Mannor; son, Stephen (Myrna) Reed; grandchildren, Cori King, Kelsi Wells, Zachary Mannor, Rachelle Mannor; great-grandson, Liam King; brother, Walter (Joy) Reed; sisters, Patti (Don) Ritchie, Cheri Reed; close friend and the world's best hugger, Nancy Thatcher; nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends more numerous than the trees "down east". He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Patricia "Bea" Reed. A lifelong farmer from an extended tradition of men of strong work ethic, Dick also barbered, built tires for Goodyear, and worked at Adco Products as a Production Engineer for 23 years. He was a life member of the NRA and of the Brooklyn Masonic Lodge #169. Dick was a passionate hunter and an excellent marksman, the woods and fields of his farm were his haven. Dick showed his renowned headstrong strength right up until his last days. He truly believed that if you worked hard, treated people right, and with a little luck from God, you could have a good life. We know he lived his entire life to the fullest. His family would like to extend their gratitude to Allegiance Oncology staff, Allegiance Hospice Home; also to the congregations of First Church of the Nazarene and Clarklake Community Church for their support and continual prayers. According to his wishes, Mr. Reed has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at the Clarklake Community Church on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, or the charity of one's choice. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and again from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 15, 2010. www.Mlive.com/obits

To my dear friend Tami. My prayers go out to you and your family in the very recent loss of your father. Losing a parent is SO hard, and no matter what the circumstances, we are never ready to say goodbye to those we love so dearly. As you cherish all the memories you have with your dad... hold them close in your heart... and he will be with you always. Blessings, my friend.

Dick... I just talked to you a couple of weeks ago on the telephone and you never mentioned your affliction. We spent so many thousands of hours supervising the tire room at Goodyear, and I hadn't seen you for several years, yet you spared me what you were going through. You never told me, or I would have been there for you. You were a special person to me, and I will never forget you. Colleen, Robin, Kathy and I will always have a special place in our hearts for you. Rest in peace ole buddy. Until we meet again. Jack and Colleen Clore.

Dear Gretchen, The years are many that I've known you and Dick. Neither of us knew the outcome of the guys we married. I feel your loss as I did my own. I will miss Dick's smiling face and warm hugs at the auctions we frequently attended. I wish you the very best and hope you know that you will one day be able to join him again. God be with you and give you peace. If you need anything just pick up the phone. My condolences to you. Mrs. William (Eleanor) Creger

Dear Gretchen,

I was heartbroken to hear of Dick's passing. You have both been wonderful neighbors for the last 30 years. When Dick's parents died, there was a significant hole of their lost presence. Now that Dick is gone too, the hole is even bigger. I shall miss him herding cows up and down the road every spring and fall. Miss watching him plan the summer garden. Miss him just being there.
Praying for the whole family,
Amy (Lamoreaux) Wise

To the family of Dick Reed:

Sorry to hear of your loss . I remember Dick from my younger days at Clarklake. I used to get my hair cut at his barber shop.. He always had a set of weights in there and if you could beat Dick in arm wrestling you didn't pay for the haircut. He let me and my brother Jim try to beat him, with us both on one of his arms. He still beat us. He was always friendly and good natured. So sorry for your loss. May God draw near to your family. All of the Reed familys of Clarklake were good folks.

Gretchen and family. I am so sorry for the loss of your husband, father, grandfather. I worked with Dick for 23 years and for those years we shared a lot of memories and stories. The last few years I saw Dick come to work, when he probably should have stayed home. Dick's taught me a few things some will be kept between the two of us, but what I can share is the Love he had for all of you. Gretchen make sure you change the oil in the tractor.
My heart and prayer to out to all of you. God Bless all of you.
