Maxine Jane (Maury) Lake of Kalamazoo, passed away at her home on December 17th, 2011 surrounded by her family.
Maxine was a beloved mother and grandmother and will be missed by many.
Born Lena Maxine Jane Maury on January 17th, 1929 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Roy Victor and Trena "Tillie" (TALMA) Maury.
On the evening of August 12th, 1950 Maxine entered into marriage to John Earl Lake, son of Russell Warren and Hazel Pearl (Denniston) Lake at the Third Reformed Church of Kalamazoo.
She was employed by the Upjohn Company at the time of her marriage and later became a bus driver for the Comstock Public Schools for over 8 years while raising her four children, Sue, Kathy, Karen & Ken. Many will remember "Max" driving them to school, countless sports events and band trips over the years. Where the kids went, Max drove them. She was later on employed by Bronson Hospital for 10 years before moving to Borgess Hospital where she retired in 1993 after 14 years of service.
She is a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Comstock Post 6252. Maxine spent many years working Bingo, preparing dinners and luncheons for our veterans and their families and for just as many years worked at the local voting precinct in Comstock for Kalamazoo County during election years.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, Roy & Trena, one brother Charles "Pat" Maury and her daughter, Kathleen J. (Lake) Gibbs. Surviving are three children, 2 daughters, Susan Lake of Kalamazoo, and Karen (Kevin) Murphy of Gulf Breeze, Fl, a son, Kenneth Lake of Kalamazoo and son-in-law Doug Gibbs, also of Kalamazoo.
Her surviving 6 grandchildren are Ensign Sam C. (Amanda) Murphy, Virginia Beach, VA, Ensign Scott T. (Alyssa) Murphy, NAS Pensacola, Cameren Kenneth Lake, Patricia Maxine, Katelyn Hazel and Christine Michelle Gibbs.
Also surviving is a sister, Martha (George) Agate of Kalamazoo and two brothers, Peter (Linda) Maury of Lakewood, CA, Terry (Patrice) Maury of Vicksburg, MI. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Bertha Maury of Kalamazoo.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 22nd, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. in the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 21st, 2011 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. A private family interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery.
