James Meeks Obituary

It is with great sadness and regret we announce the passing of James "Mike" Meeks. Mike passed away quietly and peacefully the afternoon of Thursday, April 21, 2011. Mike was preceded in death by his loving brother Clayton "Taylor" Meeks, Father Clayton Meeks, and Mother Morine (Lewis) Archebeque. Survivors include a brother William Patrick "Pat" Meeks and wife Carol of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Taylor's partner Patricia Anderson and son Ryan and daughter Holli of San Antonio, TX. Nephews include Preston Kipp Meeks, wife Kim of Denver Colorado and sons Tanner Clayton Meeks, Tucker Cole Meeks, and Terner Carlos Meeks, Nephew Patrick Keith Meeks of Memphis, Tennessee, Nieces Merien "Bit" Dorothea Alexander and daughter Cassandra Hooten, Martha "Sam" Maurine Watson and children Tyler, Terral, Tanessa, and Trinity Watson, niece Margaret "Shelly" Michele Meeks. Cousins include Larry Meeks wife Norma, Charlie Fagan wife Pam, and Mary Lou Weller husband Joe.

Mike was born to Clayton and Morine Meeks of Vaughn New Mexico on November 17 1943, the second of three boys, Mike found his way to Las Cruces in 1961 at the age of 18 where he first enrolled into New Mexico State University (NMSU) and started a job as a sales man with economy TV. In 1972 Mike began his career at New Mexico State University where he was initially hired as the first male secretary in the College of Agriculture (a fact that Mike was very proud of.) He went on to hold many other positions at NMSU in the departments of EEO, Special Events, Registrar's Office, and The Parking Office, before he retired in 2003. After a brief hiatus Mike returned to NMSU and back to Registrar's Office where he officially retired after 2 years as the Assistant Registrar. Additionally, Mike served as an Advisor to the NMSU Rodeo club in the late 80's and early 90's and, more recently, he served as a proud member of the NMSU Pioneers Club.

Mike also served his community as a member of the Sunrise Lion's Club of Las Cruces, an organization whose mission he endorsed and whose membership he thoroughly enjoyed. Apart from being a dedicated employee of NMSU and an avid supporter of Aggie athletics, Mike was a man whom you could always count on to greet you with a smile, a firm hand shake and a great big hug. Mike was befriended and beloved by many at NMSU and in the Las Cruces community. He was always ready and willing to lend a hand, or a shoulder to cry on, to anyone that was in need of it. Never a truer friend, a more respected colleague, nor a more spirited Aggie existed. Mike, you will always be remembered, you will always be loved, and you will be missed. Be in peace my friend. At Mike's request there will be no "official" memorial held but you are strongly encouraged to memorialize Mike in your own way. It is also encouraged that in lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Sunrise Lion's Club of Las Cruces. Mike's cremains will be interred with the rest of the family in Vaughn, NM at a date yet to be determined. Arrangements by Getz Funeral Home corner of Solano and Bowman Ave., Las Cruces, NM 526-2419. Mike was a great friend and mentor to so many people in Las Cruces for so many years. The world is poorer today, because of his loss. But heaven is richer.

Mike will definitely be missed. His great smile and laugh were always enjoyed by me and others. He was a very good client of mine for many years with his pets, as he really loved and cared for animals.

Our greatest Aggie has gone before us. He helped make NMSU a great institution. Guide us home Mike, when our time comes. If you are there, we will know we are in the right place! Thank you for all you gave, all you did, for loving all of us. You are THE BEST and will never be forgotten!

My sincere condolences to the Meeks Family. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Meeks when I was given the opportunity to work with him at the Registrar's Office many years ago. Little did I know that he knew my parents from their home town of Vaughn (what a small world). He was a very loving and caring person, always with a smile to share. I know he will be greatly missed.

In 1998, Mike hired a young 18 year old girl at the Parking Office and encouraged her to follow her dreams in so many ways. That young girl was me. He was there to listen, to help and even to offer advice. I worked under Mike until 2002 when I graduated from NMSU. He was there for me through happy tears, sad tears, financial difficulties and stresses. My fondest memory of him is when he dressed like the Trashy from Fraggle Rock for Halloween. You will always be in my heart Mike and I miss your smile and laugh! Keep watch over us all who still need you today.

I'm so sorry to hear about Mike. I first met Mike when he was at Registrar's Office and I was in the Business Office. He sure made me laugh - what a great guy, always smiling and teasing people. May you rest in peace, and many condolences to the family. Love Viola

Mike's obituary really expresses how many of us at NMSU felt about him. Sincere condolences to the Meeks family. He loved to talk about being a native New Mexican from Vaughn, had an incredibly positive spirit and should have been a comedian. Vaya con Dios to one of the "good guys"! T Cook

Mike was a good friend, in good times and bad. I met him when he became by boss at the Registrar's Office. He encouraged my professional development, and rejoiced in my marriage. He was a person with a loving heart, a wicked sense of humor, and twinkle in his eye. He will be missed. My prayers to his family and friends.

To the Meeks Family go my best wishes for recovery from your sadness. Mike was a cherishe neighbor on Roberts Drive and cared for our friend Jane Shore as if he were her son. From Chuck Kandle who was at his side until the end, to Luz Colorbio, to Jeanne and Barney Reeves, he will be missed.
He was the only other "Redskins" fan on the street and I will miss our chats about the team. Now he is on God's team.
