Columbus, GA- Mrs. Clara Seldon Pullins Carter, 82, of 1330 22nd Street, Columbus, died June 12, 2011 at her home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 11AM at Greater Ward Chapel AME Church with Rev. O.L. Duncan, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Green Acres Cemetery. Viewing and visitation will be Friday from 12Noon-6PM. Zeta Phi Beta's Omega Omega service will be held Friday from 6-7PM at the funeral home, according to Sconiers Funeral Home, 836 5th Avenue, Columbus.
Mrs. Carter was born October 8, 1928 in Columbus the daughter of the late W.C. Seldon and Clara Mae Farley Seldon. She joined Greater Ward Chapel AME Church at the age of 12 and was active in all youth organization including in the Jr. Choir. She was founder and member of the M.B. McClendon Stewardess Board #4, was a member of the Missionary Society, the prayer band and was a former teacher for Sunday School Class #4.
Clara was a 1945 graduate of Spencer High School . With Studies at Albany State and in Cleveland, OH Clara soon received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and her Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling from Ft. Valley State University. Mrs. Carter served 32 years in Harris and Muscogee Counties. She taught 3rd, 5th and 6th grade classes at Carver, St. Mary's Rd and Cusseta Rd. Elementary Schools, respectively and was a counselor for Carver High School. Clara was the founder of the Rhonda Seldon-Carter Developmental Center for "special ladies" and was also founder of the Loving Care Assisted Living Home, a place for people going through life-changing situations. Clara's loving husband, the late Sgt. Ret. John L. Carter, Sr. was always by her side helping these organizations work. She was also a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. in which she founded the local sorority house and the home for Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Clara was formerly married to Douglas Clemon Pullins, Jr. To this union, 2 children were born, Gregory Douglas Pullins, who preceded her in death and Rhonda Pullins of Columbus. She later married Sgt. Ret. John. L. Carter. To this union, one son was born, Darryl Greginald Carter of Columbus. In addition to her children, survivors include a loving step-son, John L. Carter, Jr. (Martina) Las Vegas, NV; one brother, Farley James Seldon (A. Marie) of Cleveland; 5 grandchildren; 3 God-daughters, Alexis King, Karen Serrano and Kendra Evans; sisters and brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews, including Angela Seldon of Cleveland and Derrick Antonio Seldon (Tina) of Hartford, CT; and a devoted cousin, Dr. N. Charles West of Atlanta, GA.

Clara, you will always have a special place in my heart!!! Earth has no sorrow that heaven can't heal. Though I moved away from Columbus we we were still friends in heart. I enjoyed working with you at Carver High and Carver Elementary. See you on the other side some day....

Mrs. Pullins-Carter taught me in the 3rd grade at Carver Elementary. I appreciate the nuturing we all received from those excellent teachers. May GOD bless you all until you see her again.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I worked for Mrs. Carter several years ago taking care of her and Mr. Carter. She was a take charge women. I know that she will be greatly missed by all.
