Eulogy for my brother. I'd like to thank and acknowledge Debbie for all you've done here and for being there for Jack through this 14 month ordeal. He found his soul mate in you.
John L., Jack, Jackie, Big Boy, Buck- Son, Father, Husband (often a husband) Brother, Friend. He lived as he chose, offered no explanation of it nor sought any forgiveness for it. He was generous to the maximum of his ability and it made you feel more significant to be in his presence.
I believe I knew my brother well; we spoke often, but more important was the time we spent in duck blinds or fishing boats. Times like those give you access to a man's heart and Jack had a big heart. He loved his children more than anything in this world. He was proud of each and every one of you.
We have all heard men described as having "marched to the beat of a different drummer" Ya think? If you said this to Jack he would tell you:
1. The origin of the phrase
2. to whom it was first directed
3. from whom it was offered
4. he'd explain the theory of the shape of a drum
5. the use of animal skins across a cylinder to create the drum surface
6. the favorite skin used by various indigenous tribes
7. the foot pounds of tension needed to stretch the skin
8. and the diameter and cylinder length required to give the desired tone
9. he may even explain how this instrument appeared simultaneously around the globe before human ability to travel or possess widespread communication
10. and if you got to the topic of communication look out! because Jack knew about communication.
Lacey mentioned that she knew little of her father's childhood. He was the oldest of 5 children born to Naomi and John L. II We lived in a small town with a population measured in the hundreds. Baby boomers, coming of age in the idyllic 50's. It was as close as you could get to Tom Sayer and Huckleberry Finn. One block away from the forest and a short walk to fishing and swimming holes. We'd hunt in the fall and skate in the winter. Jack learned to work hard at an early age and was soon to outgrow our little town. He was a great big brother always leading the way and willing to slow down and wait for a little brother. And then, as now- he left us too soon. He was off to the Air Force at 17 years old, and we missed him dearly as I miss him now. There will be no more long phone calls or hunting trips, no more days spent in a fishing boat- no one to lead the way- except this last time- I only wish you could have waited a while longer Jackie. Your battle is over, you fought it well Big Brother and I know where to find you. I will see you soon.
"Our Lost Guide"
I rode in a boat with a man one day.
he said we were off to fish.
Whether we did I truly can't say,
but I ended that trip with a wish.
Show me the sun off the water once more.
Give sound to his voice again.
Peaceful we two as we drift from the shore,
My guide, my brother, my friend.
Now here on the land with only a tear
as our guide has left us today.
In time we go to the mist without fear,
as our brother again leads the way.

Uncle Jack- You were a man that made quite an impression on everyone you met. You lived life your way- and God bless you for that. You have left behind some wonderful children and grandchildren to carry on your legacy, and for that we thank you. You will be missed by all that knew and loved you.

To my dad, the one that I always respected the most. I feel lucky to have had you as a dad, you always knew how to keep things interesting. I learned so much from you, and will dearly miss your advice and our Sunday talks. Thank you for always taking the time to make us all feel so loved and important. I miss you and love you always dad.

Your going leaves a void that can never be filled. You were the quintessential irreplaceable person so unique and treasured we will always remember with love, affection and good humor. I am grateful to have shared the time and experiences we had - both the good and the not so good of the past 14-15 months of your courageous struggle. We will hold you in our hearts. Daddy I love you so much. I am so grateful I was blessed to be your daughter for so many wonderful years. Thank you for teaching me how to be the most generous person I know how to be. You always gave to everyone, you would give the shirt off your back to make someone else smile. I am grateful for all of the memories I have and will cherish them always. I know you will be will me, watching over me until we are reunited. All of my love dad, may you finally rest.
