Staff Sgt. Vincent Wayne Ashlock was Dec. 4, 2010, while serving in Afghanistan. Born in San Jose, CA on May 10, 1965, and raised in the Central Valley, Wayne began his military career in the Army at the age of 18. After a return to civilian life, his strong patriotism led him to return to military service where he served one tour in Iraq and went on to serve in Afghanistan with the National Guard.
While serving in Iraq, he helped train Ugandan NATO troops and went on to sign with a National Guard special detachment in Afghanistan.
He is survived by his wife, Angela, and five children, Kali, Jesse, Steven, Erica and Christopher, two grandchildren, Addison and Brady, brothers Ryan, Lonnie, and sister Dawn, his mother Margot, and grandmother Bonnie Ashlock.
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, at Fort Ord Chapel, 4280 Gen. Jim Moore Blvd, Seaside. Burial will be at the San Carlos Cemetery, 792 Fremont St., in Moterey. A celebration of life service will be held at Portola Hotel & Spa, Two Portola Plaza, in Monterey.

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Vincent W. Ashlock US Army Staff Sergeant.
We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.
We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.
Sincerely,

Thank you so much for fighting for our country! Erica is one of my dearest, closest friends! She talks about her Daddy all the time! I feel like even now I am getting to know who Mr. Ashlock was to her and his entire family! He may not have realized it but he was very much so looked up to as a father, Dad, friend and hero! I know Erica brags about everything he did for his family! And she misses him more and more everyday! I think about the survivors of Mr. Ashlock everyday and probably will for the rest of my life! I cannot imagine losing my Daddy, husband or son! My thoughts and prayers will continue to be with you all! I know you all are so proud of him, what an amazing, strong person he was! I KNOW that you will see him again in God's Kingdom! God Bless you all as you grieve!

Ah Wayne, so sad to talk with your Mom this morning, and to learn of your passing. I will always remember fondly the skinny, kind hearted boy with the long blonde hair I babysat and loved. Your family became my family, and the memories are strong. Your Mom is so proud of the man you became...you brightened her world. The happy memories will eventually be foremost in the hearts of all who loved you.

MY BROTHERS now know why men who have been to war yearn to reunite. Not to tell stories or look at old pictures. Not to laugh or weep. Comrades gather because they long to be with the men who once acted at their best; men who suffered and sacrificed, who suffered and were stripped of their humanity. I did not pick these men. They were delivered by fate and the military. But I know them in a way I know no other men. I have never given anyone such trust. They were willing to guard something more precious than my life. They would have carried my reputation, the memory of me. It was part of the bargain we all made, the reason we were so willing to die for one another. As long as I have memory, I will think of them all, every day. I am sure that when I leave this world, my last though will be of my family and my comrades. Such good men!"

Dear Ashlock family,
I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. I truly feel your loss and pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. Vincent will never be forgotten.
For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed
But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.
For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.
I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.
I salute you.

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to S/Sgt. Vincent Ashlock our Brother-in-Arms . To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Vincent. And to Vincent it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Vincent, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,335 military Legionnaire Veterans of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Vincent’s family and loved ones.

Wayne. I often remember with fondness the summers we spent swimming in my backyard. With Ronnie, Terri, and Buzzy. Having towel and waterballoon fights when we were just kids. Camping with Paul and Sarah at lake mcswain. These are some of my favorite memories, and I'm glad you were a part of them. As a veteran I salute you and thank you for your selfless service of our country. God bless you, and I pray for your family.

I called Vince Wayne Ashlock "My Hero"..
in my many years, I have never met nor
probably never will meet again, a man
who I wanted to be a part of my life;
I know his Mother, Margot, very well and actually only met Vince 3 times, but his effect on me was so very profound....I found myself writing him
and trying to figure out things to send
to make him smile....one of my greatest
sorrows in my life is that he died
before I was able to get to know him even better....in my mind he has a bright light around him and I loved him
regardless of the short time I actually
was around him. It has been one of the
most inspirational experiences of my
68 year old life and my memories and
prayers are with him and his family,
especially his Mother who went to any
and every extent she could possibly could in being what every Mother desires to be, thus having a relationship with him that is enviable.
Sincerely, Pat Coniglio, Monterey, California.
