Gregory Raye Obituary

Campbell resident Gregory Raye, age 50. The thousands who fill HP Pavilion for Sharks games didn't know Gregory Raye by name. But they knew where Raye, a fan since the team's days at the Cow Palace, sat. And they knew his voice. He sat in section 209, the rowdiest location in the building. And when it came to that group's funny, rude and sometimes profane chants, he was their leader. "He used to like to say, "They say San Jose is the loudest arena in the NHL and we're the loudest section in the arena and I'm the loudest fan in the section, so I must be the loudest fan in the NHL,'' his friend Mike Lawler recalled. Lawler and others in section 209 are adjusting to the fact they will have to get along without their leader.

Raye, an experienced outdoorsman, died on a solo hike in the Sierra earlier this month. His body was found Sept. 1 after his son reported him missing for four days.

Dearest Gregory aka G'Pa - Today would have been your 63rd Birthday. You used to throw one hell of a party. I'll never forget the signs hanging around at your last gig .. Nos-mo-king!! You always made us laugh! Davina still misses her G'Pa. She speaks of you often and will always treasure the times you spent together while she helped you organize your pack for your next big adventure in the wilderness. Rest In Peace Dearest Gregory .... Rest In Peace my friend, this search is over. If I had been out in California, this might have happened differently. I remember our many bike rides around the hills around Sunnyvale and San Jose.

Dearest Gregory - Our Son has become an incredible man. He has accomplished something absolutely amazing. He climbed to the top of Mt. Brewer in King's Canyon. Yes, he did. He did it for his Daddy Waddy. He finished what you so desired. He set you free in your beloved King's Canyon; the place you loved most on this earth. That mountain may have taken your life, but now your spirit will live on with it's beauty. My heart is full. I am so proud of our boy. You are free now. Rest in Peace. My Love Always - Your Soup

We all miss you so much. Not a day goes by that I don't think about you. Your funny, funny jokes and silliness. It's just not the same around here without you. Davina and Jacob graduated from the 8th grade; next stop high school. Can you believe it?? Where have the years gone?
Miss you so much.

This is th first time I've read this strand of letters, and I just wanted to say thank you everyone.
I'm currently exploring new life with my family and doing well.
I still have my fathers ashes and plan to summit many a peak with them. On my road trip up North I was able to leave some of his ashes at the many beautiful pit stops my son and I made on the way.

Hi Gregory:

Well, I'm sure you must know by now, the Sharks didn't make it in the playoffs, but they put up one hell of fight. They lost to the Dallas Stars 2-1 (are you ready for this) in 4, yes 4 overtimes. It was actually the first full game I ever watched and I was absolutely spellbound. I think I just might become the next Raye Shark's Addict. I sure do miss you. I don't want you to be gone.

To Gregs family, my deepest sympathy. I a totally saddened to only now find out of Gregs passing. We actually played a hockey game together while at Schurz HS without knowing each other. We were a year apart and found out a few years later when we "met" at the American Academy of Art. We had some great times there and used to take a bus to the old barn to get 2nd level standing room tickets for the Hawks right at center ice. We went to one game (by bus) on the coldest day in Chicago's history in the early 80's. It was around minus 27 degrees without the wind chill added. As always, he wore the black Hawk sweater his grandmother made for him. He always wore that. And he used to always talk about his son who he loved very much. Like everyone else, I am going to miss you very much Greg. You really enjoyed life and making people feel as if they had known you forever. Goodbye friend.

I was so very sad to hear about Greg - the Voice I always heard as a season ticket holder in Section 210, but whose name I just learned today. I haven't lived in California since 2002, but am still a season ticket holder. One of the benefits I always add about our seats is being next to Section 209 - the loudest and funnest section - and Greg was the leader. I found out about the tragic loss when we came up from Atlanta to the Northeast round of games. At the Islanders game last night I sat next to someone who came out from San Jose for the games. He told me about "the voice" and I just wanted to share my condolences, belated as they are. I hope Section 209 continues the chants in his honor. He always put a smile on my face - whether it was the chants, or watching him time himself running up the stairs, he always made me laugh!
Bless you Greg!

Hi Greg it's me, Sue. Guess you probably already know that your precious Blackhawks lost to your ever lovin' Sharks (3-2). The moment I heard that on the news, I looked up and shouted "hey Greg did you hear that"?

It's just not the same without you hear. I miss you so much everyday. Haven't heard a word from our son since he moved to Washington last year. I miss him more than words can say. I've lost both my GAR's. My heart aches to hear your voices, your laughter, your insanely funny jokes. I miss seeing the two of you together - Father and Son; Best Friends.

Happy Birthday Greg!

I miss you so much. I miss your laughter. I miss your sense of humor, and I miss the music that we shared.

We went to some great concerts together. I MISS THAT! Last week I went to see Genesis with my son, Trevor and all I did was think about you!

I hope that you are at peace now and talking and laughing with Mom who passed away 3 years ago yesterday.

Love you forever - your baby sis

Gregory - It's been a year now, and I still can't believe you're gone. I miss you more than words can say. Your laugh - your sense of humor - your wit. The way you would grope me and say "Oh Mama". You always made me laugh.

Most of all, my heart breaks at the thought of the pain that our son must be in losing his Dad, his best friend. Wherever you are, I know you will see the beauty around you. I hope there are many more mountains for you to climb. I watched a documentary the other day on PBS that reminded me of you. It was an expedition on Mt. Everest. I know you always dreamed of reaching the summit on Mt. Everest. I believe you could have done it! I hope you have peace. You truly are the "Watchful One" now. Please watch over our Son. I will always miss you. Love Sue

To Greg:

I never will forget the day I first met you, while I was working at Bonnie's health food store in Chicago, back in 1984! I can't believe it was really that long ago....you came in, and soon afterwards, became one of the leaders of our main group of friends. Ah, to be single, young, in the big city, with nothing to do but hang out with your friends.....I remember our wonderful vegetarian meals, with plenty of imported beer and Haagen Daz (the old carob flavor--we were trying to avoid sugar, while simultaneously drinking lots of beer). You were the ringleader of many of our outrageous antics, like sneaking into graveyards under the full moon and ice skating at Daley Plaza in sub-zero temperatures. I'm not surprised that the people in California loved you as much as we did. I think it's poetic and oddly fitting that you died tying to reach the summit--you were always drawn to "peak" experiences! We will all miss you.......

To Greg,
Many years have gone by since I last saw you but I have been thinking of you a lot. The times we shared together in Chicago are precious memories to me. The gang of friends we came to have together, our once a week 45 mile bike rides and the great feasts afterwards. One of your paintings hangs over my fireplace. My husband surprised me with it after he met you in San Jose when he was working there about 12 years ago. When we visited you, you took my then 4 yr old daughter out to your driveway with a pink child's hockey stick and showed her how to shoot a goal. Who else but you would have done that?

When I heard the news yesterday that you had gone on to the next world I couldn't help but think of you working your way to the summit of Mt. Brewer, doing what you loved, trying to reach the sky, I felt your presence, very much alive, your big smile. You have lived life fully and well. You live on in our hearts and minds.

To Greg's family and many other friends, I wish comfort for you in knowing what a great friend and person he has been.

Greg, Sharks games just won't be the same without you. I came to every game looking forward to seeing you and wondering what new antics we'd come up with in 209. Last night, the few of us in 209 for the Teal & White game talked about how much you meant to all of us. Know that your memory will long linger in 209, and that we'll keep up your great energy and love for the game. You will be missed, SHARKMAN!

Although I did not know Greg personally, I know his sister Carol very well. I want to send out my sincere sympathies to all of his family. Coming from a large family myself, I can't imagine what it would be like to tragically lose a sibling.

As one of Greg's many casual Tank buddies, he will be missed.

Over the years, having tipped more than a few single malts with Greg, I always found him to be generous and a damn nice guy.

We will be toasting him in "Greg's Corner" between periods , for years to come.

Greg... I will miss your smile, which was truly infectious, your hugs and your laugh and most of all your love and energy for life. I cant even recall when I first met you, but it's been years. Sitting in 209 with the rest of the *rowdies* was always fun because I knew you were there with your chants. Even when I would sit elsewhere in the Tank, I could hear you and know what you were saying. You are already missed, but we know you'll be there with us as the boys lift the Cup and bring it to SJ.

Greg was there to share laughs and grow spirit. Nothing more, nothing less. A decade has passed since i've been a regular in 209 but i am saddened by the passing of someone who was pure, original and uncompromising. I never realized Greg's enthusiasm for the the outdoors. Maybe there is something about the game and the outdoors that is larger than life and Greg was lucky enough to find both.

What a shame! Dan and I were two of Greg's devoted chanters (he'd call, we'd respond) in Section 209, a few rows down (row 12) . . . Greg really made a difference in those games . . . to the fans, certainly, and maybe even on the ice once or twice. The team really ought to honor Mr. Shark. As should those of us who remain in The Pirate Section. And if we win the Cup this year, his name should be inscribed on it. My condolences to Greg's family.

I never knew you Greg and I have only been on one Sharks game in person. Your Pronger chants made me enjoy the game so much more than it could have been. You were definitely a member of the Sharks team. You were also probably the sole reason that the Tank was as loud as it was. You will live on to all of us!

Career changes took me away from 209 and the Tank...has it been eleven years ago already? But I still have fun telling people about the great times we had up there. My seat was one row down and four seats to Greg's left, right at epicenter of all the chanting. Call him a "ringleader" if you want, but all in all Greg was one heck of a fun guy. I was shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. It's clear from the comments already posted that he'll be dearly missed, both by those who knew him and those who only heard his voice.

I was a close personal friend of Gregory Raye for 21 years. He will be sorely missed by me and all who knew and loved him.

This past weekend we, his family and closest friends, all gathered at Kings Canyon National Park at Cedar Grove, Sentinel Campgrounds, for a farewell Memorial Service to Gregory on Saturday night, Sept. 9th. It was a beautiful, heartfelt tribute, and we all had a wonderful time and found closure together in the woods celebrating his life.

All our best to ya, Gregory, lad!

I knew you by association, never really had the honor to speak to you. But I know what you brough to the tank, the team and all who knew you! And I know you will be missed by many!!

The only comfort I can give to all your friends is that you are are in a better place with a clear view of all the games and don't need to yell "Down in front" anymore. And all of us will yell "You suck" in your honor!!! Go get the cup for Greg!!!

Greg was a sweet man with an infectious smile. Our seats were right behind him and we enjoyed every single chant. My last interaction with him was a compliment from him...i will always remember his charm. Thanks Greg for being you. Thanks for bringing to the Sharks, the fans and especially section 209 all your enthusiasm and specialness. You will be greatly missed. All my heartfelt wishes to his family.

September 11, 2006

We've chuckled and heckled along with you from Sec. 208, this year we made the leap across the aisle and we were so looking forward to being 209ers. It won't be the same, Greg made it great to be up in the "good seats". Thanks Greg, you'll be incredibly missed.

Shay Club 107, Sec 209

September 11, 2006

Section 209 doesn't exist without Greg's energy. Greg was part of the energy which created "Club 107".. at the Cow Palace. The first year, the CP was like a library. Greg sought out other passioniate fans and we all agreed to sit in the same section.

It took most of season 2, but the Sharks finally accepted this roudy band of fans (especially with the CP nearly empty and 107 still rockin)

Their acceptance allowed us to secure an end section in the new arena. And now everyone knows the result. They might not know who Dieter is or why we harassed him... They might not understand what a bra-trick or jello-shot is... But every fan in the stadium knows where 209 is... and knew about Greg

If I close my eyes I can hear it... Cloud 9, no, make that cloud 209 just got a bit louder... Hey Satan! You .... (you know the rest)

Nancy (Jell-o Lady)

September 11, 2006

Oh Greg, you will be missed in 209. Thirteen years of listening to and laughing at your crazy chants and cheers. The one I'll remember most: "Where's my Cheesy Puffs?". Section 209 will just never be the same without your humor and wit.

Jell-O Daughter

September 11, 2006

It just doesn't seem real we could have lost "our" voice. Over the many ups, downs, bad calls, new chants, people with no hockey ediqutte...one constant remained, Greg. Never knowing what was going to come out in that booming voice, sometimes shocking, always funny he will be greatly missed by so many indeed. Life at the tank in 209 won't be the same. People come and go but friends are forever. I know he will be up there with us, watching, yelling louder then ever being able to say some of the things we had to sensor recently. His spirit will live on forever in the memories of so many. Thanks Greg, jello shots all around!

I never personally knew Greg, but I know that he personified the spirit of every Sharks fan. Section 209 always elicited a chuckle and a grin from me at every game, and it's difficult to imagine what life at the Tank will be like without him. If his destiny was to touch and inspire every fan who ever went to a game to be as enthusiastic as he, then his job is done. Thank you to the Raye family for sharing this fine man with us.

It will never be the same in the Shark Tank, without Greg to lead us.

His passion for the game and life in general are unsurpassed.

Players come and go, but, the spirit of the game that Greg shared will stay with me, forever. I learned alot about how to be a good fan from Greg.

Every time we hear someone yell 'See ya later Ducks Fan'...I know Greg is up in hockey heaven having a laugh.

Thanks Greg for all of the fun that you brought to the game. Skate on, brother!

Trying to pick out my fondest memory of someone who grew to be one of my best friends is just about impossible. Watching the first Sharks win at the Palace or watching the Sharks open the Tank on your birthday? Playing 25 person dogpile at Paddy's after the Sharks beat Calgary in the '95 playoffs or getting the bartender to turn off the World Series so we could watch a Hawks / Blues game the next year? Watching games at your house (which was a LOT like watching them in 209) or just sitting there talking forever the night after my dad died? Nights playing any type of hockey game we could find, nights throwing darts or nights just hanging out?

Life isnt gonna be the same without you. As a great a hockey fan and artist as you were, you were an even greater friend. Looking forward to meeting again in section 209 in the great hockey arena in the sky.

I am fortunate to have sat with Greg for the past 7 seasons. His passion was contagious, and I am especially grateful to have been able to take a backpack trip with him to the high country. Greg was the type of guy that - for many - in reading this story you realize that you knew him. Sadly, I was never able to meet him personally but he and the rest of 209 are a huge part of the Sharks experience. From comments in his guest book and on the Shark's forum, I really missed out.

To Greg:

- Thank you for keeping the games fun. It sounds like you were an even better man than fan - and that is saying a bunch.

I met Gregory 11 3/4 years ago. He said "Come on, meet my friends, we talk about hockey all the time". I did just that, and life was never the same again - certainly for the better. The happiest, most fun times in my life (so far) revolved around Gregory and those friends of his I met - throughout the years.

I love you Gregory. You will be missed!

One of the things I looked forward to this upcoming season was speaking to Gregory before and after the games at O'Flaherty's. Not just about hockey and the Sharks but old movies, hiking and politics.

My life is richer for having spoke with him, and watching the Sharks just won't be the same without him. Gregory, I wish you didn't leave us, but at least it was doing something you loved to do. I'll be screaming "Where's your discipline!" whenever wingers go offside, and we'll hoist a few to you this season. You're in a better place, but we will miss you. God keep you well.

I met Gregory 11 years ago one night in section 209 and decide to move my seats from 226 to 209 in large part because of his enthusiastic cheers. We soon became friends and enjoyed countless good times. He watched my two sons grow up from young boys and was always glad see them and hear how there were doing. It is a sad day to learn just who "The Voice" of section 209 was.

I enjoyed Greg's well timed chants... never stupid, although sometimes over-the-top, Greg's booming voice helped to unify Sharks fans in their support of our beloved team.

Greg was, and will always be, "The 7th man" on the San Jose Sharks wherever he is now.

My heart goes out to his family for their loss.

Gregory, I will miss you. I enjoyed our talks about classic films, your passion for art, and our beloved Sharks. I just can't imagine a season without your smiling face at O'Flaherty's after the game. You were a joyous presence in my life, but too brief. I'm glad you died doing something you loved. I'm hoping there is a great Irish Pub in the afterlife and you are there now with a good Irish beer. Save one for me.

I was a Sharks season ticket holder for many years in Section 210. I remember Greg well as he moved up and down the aisle between our two sections (usually at a high speed). Rest in peace.

Greg was doing what he loved best. Being in tune with nature. A man of many passions. He will be greatly missed in 209. Let's all do Greg proud and be loud and proud Sharks fan when at the arena

I did not know him but we all know who he is. Anyone attending a sharks home game should know. He will be missed by more people then anyone knows. RIP Sharks brother!

May God's blessings be upon you Greg, hockey's greatest fan, and even greater friend.

Greg, I never met you, but I will miss you. It won't be the same at the Tank without you there.

Godspeed.

Being outdoors is heaven to me, as I'm sure it was to him.

To go to Heaven while being outdoors is all the better.

He left this life, into the next, seeing green trees and blue sky.

To go from here to there in such a vibrant view is a blessing from God. I pray I can do so well.
