Lawrence Gamotis Obituary

GAMOTIS Lawrence Gamotis- A native of New Orleans and a resident of Mobile for 58 years passed away Monday September 27, 2010 at a local hospital. He was 90 years old. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Yvonne Landry Gamotis, three sons: Michael Gamotis, Jerome (Paula) Gamotis and John Thomas Gamotis, all of Mobile. Four daughters: Delane (Bruce) Bacon of Pinellas, FL, Carol (Griffin) Wells, Vivian (Joseph) Dooley and Lynette Gamotis Conner all of Mobile. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Drs. David (Jill) Gamotis of Jasper, AL, Robert Gamotis of Birmingham, Catherine (Edward) Wynn of Mobile, Michael (Chesley) Gamotis of Birmingham, Darren (Christina) Tretter of Springhill, FL, Dr. Karen LeBlanc and fiance', Zach Stabler of Chattanooga, TN, Andrew Dooley, Eric Dooley, Michelle Conner and Thomas Conner all of Mobile. Three great grandchildren: Cameron Tretter, Christina Tretter and Anna Gamotis. He served four years in the United States Army during WWII. He was a watchmaker and jeweler and in 1959, along with his wife & sons, founded Mobile Instrument Company. In addition to repairing navigation and surveying instruments, he was well kwown as a magnetic compass adjuster on all types of seagoing vessels. He was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus and a founding member of St. Dominic Catholic Church where he attended Mass daily. Fond of hunting, fishing, golf and scuba diving he also enjoyed traveling across the country with his wife in their Airstream. Visitation will begin at noon on Saturday October 2, 2010 at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 4160 Burma Road, Mobile, AL. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 pm followed by interment at Pine Crest Cemetery on Dauphin Island Parkway. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Mulherin Custodial Home, 2496 Halls Mill Road, Mobile, AL 36606. The family would like to express their gratitude to everyone for their support and prayers over the years and for the donations to Mulherin Custodial Home.
