All these years later I still think of those wonderful GGC-MC, and later Singers, days with great fondness. 50 years later, the friendships I made then are still friendships to this day. Even living 1500 miles from "the Heights", this still holds true. The vast lessons you taught us have been carried by so many of us thru our lives. Our memories of that special time won't ever be forgotten. Aside from singing at Heights, you were an integral part of the Cain Park Arts Festival, founded by my mom, that continues to this day. The legacy you left is tremendous...Thank you, Mr. Bill.

It was many many years and many miles before i would return to Cleveland where upon through a friend was afforded a visit to the then retired home of Mr. Thomas... and as I sat there talking with him , i felt my throat starting to choke up and tears flooded my eyes as i tried to explain to him how much his presence as a teacher and as a friend ( if you dare call a teacher your friend ) had mentored the rest of my life...he was truly an inspiration not only as a music lover but as a human being , challenging us from the simplest to the most extreme in choral compositions...when i saw the movie " Mr Hollands Opus " it truly captured the Greatness of this man that we lovingly referred to as Mr. T.....and so all of us who had the opportunity to be a part of his world , We Celebrate once more his Life...and his Legacy.....until we meet again

What can I say about the man who drove me to school every morning, teased me mercilessly about cleaning up after my dog, mowed the lawn every week and shoveled snow every morning in winter, and taught me the most beautiful song that I can still only sing with and for those who were a part of Heights Singers? I had the great pleasure of living next door to Mr. Thomas my entire life, being best friends with Janet, and taking music lessons with Mrs. Thomas (I miss my piano). I was blessed to be a part of their lives. His presence has truly made a difference in my life. He will always hold a special place in my heart and I will miss him greatly. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those who were fortunate enough to know him, and especially to those who loved him most.

To the Thomas family: Mr. Thomas will always be one of the most important figures in my life. He was a perfectionist, a leader, a great music teacher and a gentleman. I spent many, many hours on the fourth floor of Height High, the auditorium and tour buses with him and his mark on my life is evident each day. He demanded hard work and excellence and offered praise when the time was right. As a result, he made us better human beings, more ready to face the world when we left high school. I am sorry I missed his funeral; I only learned of his passing this evening. My sincere condolences to all of you. He was a special person.

Mr. Thomas, So sorry to hear of your passing. My high school years were the hardest time of my life. Things changed when I found music. You always encouraged me to sing as if I had no fear. I lived for music class, concerts and trips with the group. We had many good times. You will be missed and Thank you for giving me the gift of music. Class of '78. Linda

The impact Bill Thomas made on me and my peers cannot adequately be put into words. How can you describe a man who brings out the best in you that even you did not know existed? Tough love? Sure (ask anyone who was an accompanist for three years). But the results and the rewards were beyond measure. My passion and interest in music was formed in large part due to the experience of being part of Heights Singers (1977-80) and the proud student of Bill Thomas.

Mr. Thomas. You are such an inspiration to me! I am now teaching high school chorus because you inspired me in my years at Heights and being in Singers. You retired at the end of my first year in Singers in 1996 and it didn't feel the same. Dear Jane, Beth, David and Janet,
I was so sad to hear of the loss of your dear husband, father and grandfather. Bill was a great inspiration and positive leader and teacher to so many. He shared so much with myself as well as with my family and helped to define who I am today in my current work and my life with my own family. There were so many special relationships he developed with those who I loved most...my parents. What a tremendous loss for your family and all of us. Through all the laughs and tears my time and experiences in GGC/MC will never be forgotten. Please accept my deepest sympathy as I was out of town at the time of the service. I actually was never lucky enough to have Mr. Thomas for Singers. He was my freshman chorus teacher, and the reason that I, and 3 of my classmates joined Heights Singers. Unfortunately, our freshman year was the year he retired. As a freshman, Mr T asked me to be the page turner for the Spring concert, which was a huge honor to me since I was able to be a part of a group that at the time, freshmen couldn't join. I remember seeing what an amazing family vibe the group had, something which would be lost in the coming years. Although those of us who had known Mr T tried to keep that family vibe alive, it was never the same. My favorite memory of him, was in freshmen chorus, we were working on music reading, and I had made a stupid mistake. My friends Katie (a brunette) said, "Mr T, she's a blonde, would you expect any different?" Mr T looks right at her and says "Blonde is a state of mind, not just a hair color." He was an amazing man and an amazing teacher. And singing Let It Be Me with him directing on screen, was truly an experience I will never forget.

Mr. Thomas was my all time favorite teacher and a favorite person as well. He showed me how to be my best - not with a strong hand - but with one outstretched. He expected a great deal from his students because he knew we were capable of greatness. He was a man of second chances and taught me to give life a second look. No teacher believed in me like he did and has given me a lifetime of believing in myself. You will be missed but always remembered.

I am grateful for having been a part of the Heights Singers community and honored to have had the teachings of Mr. Thomas. He ran a tight ship, but protected his crew. Despite his tough love there was always warmth, sensitivity, and kindness to be found, not to mention a great enthusiasm for music that lifted us all! I'll never forget him holding up the first compact disc I had ever seen. He held it up, gave a big dimpled grin, and played it for us with pride. He knew the magic of music and the healing power it had. He will be truly missed. I look forward to the "Great Day" we all join together again in song! Peace to the Thomas family.

I was in Girls Glee Club Class of '73. CHHS was such a huge school at that time, it was easy to get "lost". I believe I truly found a home on the 4th floor and cherish the frienships that I made, many that endure to this day.
My husband is a member of the clergy and when we were first married I found it somewhat difficult to identify with some of the spoken prayers. One day I just closed my eyes and heard Mr.Thomas' voice in my head telling us to sing from your heart and soul. I do this at every prayer service I attend and think of him each time.
Rest in Peace Mr. T

Dear Thomas Family,
He was my inspiration to pursue a career in entertainment and certain things he said to GGC-MC in the moment were ones we never forgot and served us well. One being, "It doesn't matter if there are only 2 old ladies in the audience and a german shepherd, you have to give them 100%." It was on Tour at a naval base and our audience was limited to a handful of servicemen and women.
He will be missed by every student and especially by those of us who were part of the Chorus when he had only been at Heights a couple of years and formed the foundation of
what was to be his legacy. I bless the day he entered my life. Paul Tapie, President of Men's Chorus, Class of 1973.

It is very difficult to put into words my thoughts about Mr. Thomas.....he was so much more than a teacher and taught so much more than music. He taught some of lifes most valuable lessons regarding the rewards of hard work and disciple, teamwork, and personal integrity. I always had the utmost respect for him. He was in every sense of the word, a gentleman.
The world is truly a lesser place without Mr.T. Our loss is heaven's gain....
My heartfelt condolences to his family.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Bill Thomas. I, too, was blessed with the opportunity to be a member of the GGC-MC family. My fondest memories of CHHS were those spent rehearsing, touring, and performing under his direction. Mr. Thomas always had high expectations for us which taught us the importance of hard work. In doing so, he brought out the best in each one of us. I know I am a better person for having the priviledge of being one of his students. Hopefully, I have conveyed some of those values modeled by Mr. Thomas to my students. Rest in peace.

As I read the comments from everyone else I can only echo what has already been said. I had the privilege of not only being a three year member of Singers but my relationship carried on as a chaperone on tour for more than 10 years until Mr. Thomas retired. I watched Mr. Thomas listen to and advise countless GGC/MC members on every topic imaginable. Whether is was someone who was home sick on their first tour, girls crying over boy problems, or one of us just looking for a little encouragement. It did not matter what the issue was he was always there for us! Mr. Thomas (KING Bill) had a tremendous impact in my life. The comment that he would say to us before a performance when we were struggling with a particular section of music was “you must rise to the occasion”. Mr. Thomas always strived for and encouraged us to do better, not to settle for good enough. I can truly say those words “rise to the occasion” have stuck with me my entire life. To Beth, David, and Janet I will never forget what a great person your dad was and my memories of him will live on forever.

Dear Thomases--This is serendipity. As I drove past Heights High this morning, I realized it was spring break. Could it be that Bill missed Tour so much he decided to take matters into his own hands and go up to lead that tour bus in the heavens??? On a serious note, I must tell you how much Bill met to me in the many avenues where our paths crossed. The opportunity to go on two tours with the Singers as a parent, the opportunity to provide leadership to the parent organization, the opportunity to organize garage sales, the opportunity to see the impact he had on my daughter......there would be no way to express my gratitude.
Bill has had a difficult struggle in recent years. You all will miss him so much. We know he is at peace. Love to all of you. See you Saturday as we all celebrate his life!

He was the best and scariest music director I ever had! He once kicked me out of a performance for giggling during a rehearsal. The lesson was learned and the incident became a great story with many retellings over the years(smile). The discipline along with the quest for a quality sound, good showmanship and love of music remains with me today, almost 40 years later. I've sung in choirs around the world and sing with an excellent Director now with the Washington Performing Arts Society and none, yet, have compared with him! My deepest condlences to the family. He was wonderful and will not be forgotten.

I feel so blessed to have studied under and learned from Mr. Thomas. The best memories I have of my high school career all come from being in Singers. My experience being in the Singers Family are beyond words. There are so many ways he influenced my life and I will always love and appreciate him for that. Because of him, I sing the scales to my kids at night before they go to bed! It takes a special person to deal with all those teenagers for all those hours and their angst at that age, and he did it with compassion and sensitivity and fierce discipline. Thank you Mr. Thomas for the music, the tours, the solos, the rehearsals and most of all, "Let It Be Me." You were a great father to us all and will greatly be missed.

Mr. Thomas was a wonderful teacher, mentor and second father to every member of Men's Chorus/Girls Glee Club (Singers). The two years I was a member were the best years of my high school career! Mr. T, was the "Mayor of Cain Park" for many summers and was a key player in what it has become today. He put the same love and dedication into the park that he did while teaching at Heights High. At the age of 10, I decided that my first major goal in life was to become a singer with Girls Glee Club. This was how old I was at my first G.G.C.-M.C. concert that my older brother, Jon, began to sing in as a 10th grader. We were an enthusiastic family, my parents working endless hours in the parents association. I then watched my brother Dave's 3 years with the group and couldn't wait for the end of 9th grade to try out. What a great day when I made it! What an amazing education we all received from Mr. T and the Singers Family! I still use many of the lessons learned in those years today as a Catholic Cantor. I am often asked for advice by people about voice lessons for children and they are surprised when I say I never had them. Well, actually, I did have them--we got so many lessons from Mr. T that nothing more was ever needed. I never would have made it through those tough teen years without the salvation of Heights Singers and Mr. T. I have taken my kids to several performances in the last few years and they can never quite understand why I get so emotional during them. No one could quite describe the uniqueness of this group. I have had many directors since Mr. T, but never any close to him in knowing exactly how to get the job done right!

Dear Jane, David, Beth and Janet:
It's nearly impossible for me to put into words just how much your father meant to me. He was a mentor, a friend, a confidant, a sounding board, an example and most of all, that little voice in my head saying "you can do it." He taught me confidence in myself and compassion for others.
I know his spirit will be along side me as we embark on this next Cain Park season.
Rest in Peace my Friend.

I send my deepest condolences. I was so sorry to learn of Bill's passing this week.
My mind has been flooded with memories of my six years at Cain Park--years that had such a positive impact on me and set me on my path in life. Bill is largely responsible for that. With the hindsight that age and experience gives us, my memories of 'Mr. Thomas' grow fonder...balancing between being a friend and teacher is difficult, yet he did it gracefully and naturally....Finding the right mix for both us and the audience between popular music and classical was commonplace for him, with the result of infusing us with love for all styles.......'Tough love' would be the call at times, deservedly so, but I felt his compassion and personal concern when in his office privately with him.....We liked him then, for how we felt....We love him now, for what he helped us become. Rest in peace Mr. Thomas...and thanks.

Dear Thomas Family,
Mr. Thomas brought so much light and love into the lives of his students and all of us were touched in an enormous way. We learned hard work, dedication and leadership from this incredible man. I still remember the excitement and hard work each concert season brought, the rehearsals, the late nights and the wonderful feeling of stepping out on stage knowing our Director was going to lead us to new heights as we all gave the best performance we could. I am saddened by your loss but I know Mr. T is in heaven rejoicing with the angels (or maybe even directing them). You will be in our prayers as you go through this difficult time but please know your husband, father and grandfather touched thousands of lives and taught us each to do our best, give our best and sing our hearts out.
May God comfort you during this difficult time and know you are in the thoughts and prayers of the many students that were touched by Mr. Thomas

William D. Thomas (Bill) was a great and positive influence on my High School life. I spent three years in the Men's Chorus at Heights High, traveled with bill, perfomed, learned, built stages, had solos and progressed to Vice-President of the Mens Chorus in 1974-75 school year. I owe a great deal of maturity, staying out of trouble and growth to Bill. I will surely miss him and know he will be greatly missed by many, besides his family and immediate friends. I am living in Canada and unable to attend the funeral, but will be thinking, reminising and celebrating his impact on me as a person. I wish you all great memories even though his life was cut short. All the best! Howard A. Moster, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada 780-909-7479

My husband and I made a big move this Summer, and it was the first time in years that I looked through all my pictures, programs and albums from the Heights Singers. I purged a lot before the move but my Heights Singers memories came with me. Mr. Thomas will remain with me forever!

Dear Jane, Beth, David, Janet and families,
We were saddened to hear about Mr. Thomas. He had a gift of encouraging us to be, not only the best students/musicians we could be, but also, the best people we could be. It was an honor to have known him and learned from him. We hope you find some solace and peace in the many memories you have, and in the tributes shared by so many.

Mr. Thomas taught me that I could sing, and I'm still singing today. I was a proud member of Glee Club and Singers from 1984-1987. Mr. Thomas always expected excellence from his students--what a superb teacher. I just shared a Singers spring break tour story with my two children the other day! He is unforgettable.

So sorry for your loss. I feel privileged to have been in both Heights Choir under the direction of Mr Thomas and with Heights Singers in the early 80's. My best memories of high school are with my friends on tour or all those practices the list goes on. Bill was an inspiration and like a father to me and my older sisters Donna & Lori, who sang with GGC-MC. And part of our Masonic family as well at Heights-Loin Heart. He will be missed by us. Our father also had Parkinson Disease, it is not easy to see one go through what one goes through with such a terrible disease. Our heart goes to the family. Our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.“Practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.” - William D. Thomas. From the Mumaw family as well, Rest in Peace and without pain. God Bless!

Bill helped me become the man, father, and husband I am today. This from my music teacher...life's lessons come in many forms, with Bill, it was by example, not lectures , not threats...an amazing man who left his mark on everyone, the best man I ever knew.

I was in Mr. T's very first year of GGC-MC. He made us work hard, and achieve big.
He taught us the proper way to pronounce excelsis (eggshell- seese)
- which I recall every year when the holiday music takes over the airwaves.
Throughout my career as a music producer / lyricist, I was most honored when Mr. T. asked me to write him a song.
He reached out to us as students, and is still touching our lives as adults.

Rest in Peace Mr. Thomas. I remember well your arrival into GGC-MC back in 68, and how the group grew and improved, as did we all. I still love to sing, and do so in Community Chorus and Theater productions. Thank you Mr Thomas, GGC-MC was my anchor through High School. Class of 71.

In remembrance.
The year was 2004 and i found myself back in Cleveland for my 20 year class reunion...As chance would have it i was able to cross paths with an old friend and alumni Al Glickson with whom i had shared the privilege of being a part of this high school organization called the Mens chorus,Girls Glee Club Singers...As we started to reminisce about those years,Al offered up to me a chance to go see Mr.Thomas at his house...Mr.Thomas was the musical director and our teacher for this singing organization but,he was much more than that to most of us who were lucky enough to cross his path...This was a man who was not only an inspiration to us all as a music teacher but he taught us like a father figure how to conduct ourselves as young adults...how to appreciate...not only these wonderful vocal offerings but our social world around us... He wasn't afraid to listen to our ideas or what we might have to offer...He had a wise sense of humor..He made you want to push your limits and achieve..He made performers of us all and placed us in this school limelight if you will...He was one of those Teachers who were the inspiration for movies like Mr.Hollands opus and tv shows like Fame and Glee...I was fortunate through teary eyes and a choked up throat to be allowed to tell him all these things...to let him know that he made a difference in my life...in all our lives...and all those wonderful memories are still with me..still affect me..still inspire me..and will do so throughout my lifetime.
As we affectionately called you...
Thank You Mr.T..Thank You for everything
our love and our sympathy
to the Thomas family

I was in Heights Singers from 1982-1984 and Mr. Thomas was "that" teacher for me. In the tumultuous time that many teenagers face, he grounded us by offering discipline, love, hard work, and ultimately, the pride that comes from accomplishing amazing music. I can still close my eyes and picture the look on his face when we had finally, after hundreds of practice rounds, given him the perfect song. It felt like a gift. He was an amazing man and will be missed. I think of him often after all these years. My condolences to the family, and thank you for sharing him with us for many late night rehearsals and tours out of town.

Mr. Thomas was a wonderful influence in my life during my teen years as a member of the Heights Singers. I will always remember his kindness and sincerity. He was such a wonderful director of the Heights Singers and a wonderful person. I will miss him dearly. I will never forget the wonderful memories from Singers, and I will never forget him. He has had a such a positive influence in my life. Michael Salzinger, Twinsburg, Ohio

I was an accompanist for GGC-MC from 1971-1974, and Mr. Thomas was a demanding taskmaster. He knew what he wanted from the singers and from the pianists, and made it clear that we needed to stretch ourselves to meet those expectations. "Dumbing down" or accepting less wasn't an option. I work now as a professional accompanist and high school choral music educator, and have appreciated the preparation that I received from Mr. Thomas. These things are now part of my classroom. When pieces like the Vivaldi Gloria, "Lift Thine Eyes", "A Rovin'" or sections of Frostiana come around, it is like greeting old friends as the music takes me back to high school and the great memories of being "on the bench" for Mr. Thomas. Our thoughts are with the family.

Mr. Thomas was a huge force for good in a difficult time in my life. I was the last of 4 sibs to be privileged to be a part of this amazing man's legacy.
He made us focus, work harder than we thought we could and reach for excellence - actually achieving it.
From 1978 to 1985 (HS & Cain Park) I got to be a part of this family, and proudly call myself a geek (now Gleek!).
He wasn't afraid to show us the world & different traditions (Church AND Temple visits and music) and was brave to take so many of us unruly kids on tour after tour...
Thanks to his family for letting us share his love - I'm sure he's singing up there now in MILLION part harmony!!!
It's amazing to read all of your comments - another testimony to the family he created...

I had been thinking about Bill and GGC-MC a lot this past week because my 14 year old son, Nathan sang with his High School Chorus at Disney World on Friday, March 25. I was recalling the wonderful concerts and tours to Toronto and Roanoke. I have to agree with and add to the many remarks made about the lasting impact Bill had on me and so many young people. He shared his love of music, he gave of himself, he asked a lot of us and he believed in us. I received a music scholarship from the Girl's Glee Club my Senior year(1973). I used the money to buy a guitar. That guitar traveled with me to college('73-'77), was played at the Eastshore Club (The Pink Motel) and Cain Park, moved with me to Atlanta, was played in my pre-school classroom and is now used in my classes and private guitar lessons as I continue to share my love of music. Thank you, Bill.
Jane, Beth, David and Janet, Please know you are in my thoughts. My mother, Martha Cleaveland, who lives in Eastlake asked me to convey her heartfelt sympathy. She said she is grateful to Bill for the joy in music and learning he shared with her daughters.
I have to agree.
He lives on in everyone he touched.
Peace and Love to you.

I was a member of MC-GGC from 1972-1974, Mr. Thomas made a huge impact on my life. He taught me that I could succeed at anything I worked hard for. He was a great man with a talent of taking kids to places they never thought they could go. I love him, but know that he now rests with Jesus. God Bless you all in this time.

I was a member of the Heights Singers / GGC-MC from 1982-1984. I transferred to Heights High from Northern California in the middle of my sophomore year. I remember studying a Singers concert program found in homeroom, auditioning for and being accepted into the group for the following year, and then attending their Spring Concert.
Immediately after experiencing that amazing concert, I rushed up to the 4th floor to inform Mr. Thomas that I did not think I was good enough to be in his incredible group. He assured me that I would be fine.
I went on to sing solos and be a featured dancer with the Heights Singers... with Mr. Thomas' guidance all along the way. My senior class even voted me Best Male Singer. Mr. Thomas took my moderate talent, my zero confidence and led me to not only thrive with the Heights Singers, but later to perform professionally with theme parks, cruise ships and Broadway tours and regional musical productions.
I have always taken what I learned from him and the Heights Singers into my professional and personal life.
More than that, Mr. Thomas taught me discipline, leadership, pride in hard work and loving the "details." The Heights Singers taught me community in a way I could never have experienced accidentally. Where else could one experience a Jewish Seder and a Lutheran Palm Sunday service during the same week on Spring Tour?
My thoughts, prayers and condolences are extended to his family. His legacy has shaped and touched so many, many lives.
Our tears will flow more readily now during "Let It Be Me," thinking of the glorious man who taught us to sing that song, and so much more.
God Bless.

I was a member of Men's Chorus and Heights Singers from 1978-1981. Mr. Thomas and Singers truly impacted my life in a positive way. The love of music, dedication, hard work, mutual respect, and frienship were all nurtured by Mr. Thomas. I owe GGC-MC and Mr. Thomas gratitude for my status and my life-long friends. Rest in Peace.

Jane, Beth, David & Janet,
My heart is broken at the loss of Bill. I knew him from his very first year at heights when my sister Lauren was in GGC-MC. I knew I had to be a member as well. Then it was my turn, I auditioned at the end of 9th grade and blew it! I didn't make it. Mr. Thomas told me that I wasn't going to get into Glee Club because I was Lauren's sister. I had to make it on my own. The most incredible words I have ever heard. I spent 10th grade in sophmore chorus which was almost as good, because I still got to sing with Mr. Thomas and of course babysit for Beth and David and then Janet. At the end of 10th grade I auditioned again...didn't make it then either. I was devisdated. But those words echoed in my head again. He really meant it! I worked my self silly and finally I made it. I learned not to take anything for granted. I had to stand on my own 2 feet. From that day forward I worked hard for what I wanted and have accomplished so much. The Love, Support and Dedication Bill showed all of us, his children, has stayed with me to this day and will forever. I may not be a music teacher, but I am an educator and I believe in my kids, like he believed in each and every one of us.
I Love You Mr. Thomas and I know you knew that. Rest In Peace. You deserve it.

Mr Thomas had the most profound impact on me during the most important developmental years of my life, and I am forever grateful for what he gave me. It's been 34 years since I graduated, and he's always been in my heart and thoughts. He was the ORIGINAL Mr. Holland, and will be missed immeasurably by countess people who's lives were touched and changed forever by Mr. T. Rest in Peace - you were loved deeply.

I was the Sun News "paper girl" for the Thomas family back in the mid 1980's. I was also honored to be a part of the Cleveland Heights Singers from 1985-1987. Mr. Thomas was an amazing teacher, with amazing charisma. I will always remember all of the Cleveland Heights Singers - both current members and alumni - gathering hands around the auditorium of Cleveland Heights High School so that we could sing "Let It Be Me". Mr. Thomas, you are truly missed.

I was never really someone to have "favorite teachers." In fact, I'd say I only had one -- Mr. Thomas. I truly believe I am the person I am today in a large part for having been in GGC-MC/Heights Singers and from Mr. Thomas' guidance, support, influence and belief in me. He was a great educator who touched the lives of so many, and his legacy will live on in those and in the people they touch as well.
Deepest condolences to his family.
