LEO HINDSLEY Obituary

Leo Winston Hindsley, 82, went to be with the Lord on November 29, 2011, with his wife at his side. A memorial service will be held at Holly Hill Church of Christ on December 8, 2011 at 11 AM. Leo was born on November 15, 1929 in Rochester, Texas. He is survived by his beloved wife, Darlene; as well as three daughters and sons-in- law, Kathleen and Mikel Pistole of Almont, Michigan, Rebekah and Barry Pate of Plano, Texas and Cynthia and John Michaelis, of Ponce Inlet, Florida. Other survivors include his grandchildren, Rhonda Stroud and husband, Dwayne, Jennifer Strbenac and David Kunz, Gavin Pate and wife, Elizabeth, Vanessa Logue and husband, Trey, Andrea Mead and husband, Marc, Eric Michaelis and wife, Laura, Owen Michaelis and wife, Erin; as well as 11 great-grandchildren. He also leaves one surviving brother, Duyane Hindsley. Leo and his family served as missionaries in France from 1957 to 1963. This stage of their life opened up the door to much travel, which became a shared pastime for the family. After returning to the U.S., the family resided in Michigan where he ministered to several churches of Christ in the Detroit area. He completed his university education at this time, eventually earning his Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He taught History at Michigan Christian College (now Rochester College) from 1968 until his retirement in 1992. After retiring, Leo and Darlene moved to Murray, Kentucky for seven years, where he pursued his passion for raising horses and boating. In 1999, they settled in Port Orange, Florida, where he taught Bible classes at Holly Hill Church of Christ and served briefly as an elder. He later helped establish the Port Orange Church of Christ. He continued to breed horses and received much pleasure from watching his horses graze on his lovely property. Leo was admired for his gentle spirit, his brilliant mind, and his dedication to serving God. To know him was to love him. He will be sorely missed by his extended family and his many friends throughout the world. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.dalewoodwardfuneralhomes.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Holly Hill Church of Christ Food Bank for helping in feeding the many homeless children in the Daytona Beach area. The mailing address is: Holly Hill Church of Christ Food Bank, 1725 Ridgewood Avenue, Holly Hill, FL 32117.

Leo was amongst the 3 most beloved, kind, gentle, understanding and the best friend anyone could be blessed. I think of him often; I still miss him so very much. I hope his family is celebrating his life; it's hard to be happy when your father passes. My father at age 53 passed. I think of him every day & miss him! He & my son are the other extraordinarily kind and loving men. He and my father shared the same birthday! He will always be one of my favorite people I have ever known!

Darlene, I look forward to seeing Leo when we are all reunited in heaven. As a young woman fresh out of college attending the congregation where you guys were working, he taught me a great deal. I remember him as a quiet, gentle, extremely learned man. My heart goes out to you in your loss.

Dr. Hindsley was the most amazing Christian teacher. I majored in history just so I could keep taking his classes. He was the first teacher I had that showed me how world history and the Bible tied together. My prayers are with his family in their loss.

My prayers & thoughts are with you, Darlene. I hope you and your family take solace in that he is with God & all pain, suffering, and that empty place in your heart and soul can be soothed and realize that he is in a world far better than ours. We talked on his birthday & was planning a spring/early summer visit with you and him. I know that there are not words that are comforting enough initially to take the pain away for the loss of such an extraordinary man; for his wife, family & friends. He certainly made the world a much better place with him in it! I will never forget the wonderful times, talks, & bond that formed with each of you. You treated me as a family member & will also remember all the fun & wonderful memories of living with you. I wish you love and your girls & their families & pray that God helps your hearts and that you find strength to continue on with your life and may it be blessed. Much love & prayers, Danita

Many people will miss Dr. Hindsley! But so happy he has gone to be with the Lord. He was my Western Civ prof at Michigan Christian College in the fall of 1985, and of course Mrs. Hindsley was my French teacher at Avondale for four years. Love them both! ~ Jodi Niemi Brown

He was an inspiration to many of us, very gentle, kind and loving. Grateful for the example he gave and life he lived. He was not only a professor who genuinely CARED and listened when I needed guidance and support but was a good friend. He will be missed, but we are thankful for the blessing that he was to each of us.

Review Your Sympathy Card

Please review your card: Inside | Front / Back

I was a student of Dr. Hindsley's in 1972-74 at M.C.C. I must admit that history was not my favorite subject, but Dr. Hindsley loved it so much that it was catchy! I learned so much.

Once, a campus joke on me was that, as Student Council Treasurer, I was using funds for my own use. In Dr. Hindsley's class, he turned a page on his flip chart and there there was a page about me embezzling funds! Everyone screamed with laughter and Dr. Hindsley enjoyed it most of all.

He was a true teacher. I now have a PhD and am teaching at RC and hope I can influence my students half as much as he did.
