Robert Patrick "Bob" Maguire obituary, 1944-2011

Robert Maguire Obituary

Our beloved Robert "Bob" Patrick Maguire, 66, left us suddenly while at his "church" - the great outdoors - on March 14, 2011. He was at his cabin on the Chatanika River, with his beloved granddaughters when he suffered a massive heart attack. He lived life to the fullest and died doing what he loved most - spending time with his family, surrounded by nature.
He was born Nov. 6, 1944, to Hugh and Irene Maguire and raised in Lake Chelan, Wash. He played on the Lake Chelan football and baseball teams and later played college baseball at Washington State University. He earned his bachelor's degree at Washington State University and later his master's degree in education from University of Alaska Fairbanks.
He came to Alaska in 1965, at age 21, with his college buddy, Sandy Hamilton, so they could teach in the Bush and experience wild Alaska adventures. He was a principal-teacher at Hughes, Georgetown, Huslia, Allakaket, Nikolai and McGrath. He first retired in 1998 after 30 years of teaching. After his first retirement the family moved back to Fairbanks, where he worked for Denakkanaaga, then the Doyon Foundation, and retired again in 2005.
When he was younger he was a pilot and owned an airplane, but after his first child was born, Cora didn't want him to fly with their daughter so he sold the plane. He kept a dog team and mushed dogs and loved being outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping and sledding. He was a carpenter and loved building anything out of wood. He built the family homes in Allakaket, in Fairbanks at Murphy Dome and his latest projects were a steam bath and an addition to his cabin on the Chatanika River.
Bob was a gift to our community. He was the McGrath High School girls' basketball coach for many years and took them to state where they won the 2A State Tournament.  In 1993, he was named Coach of the Year for the state of Alaska by the Alaska Legislature. When asked to volunteer he never said no. He volunteered at the FNA GRAF House, Fairbanks Correctional Center, cultural camps, countless basketball tournaments, and salvaging roadkill moose for nonprofits. He volunteered as a coach, adviser, teacher and science fair judge at Effie Kokrine Charter School. He was the first to come up with the idea of starting a charter school based on Alaska Native culture, so he took a special interest in the Effie Kokrine Charter School.
In 1967 his friends told him he had to meet a young lady named Cora Moses who worked at the school in Allakaket. Soon after, they fell in love and were married in 1968. The Moses family and the Native people on the Koyukuk River took him in as one of their own and after that he was Native in his heart. Bob and Cora lived in Allakaket for three years before moving to Nenana and then lived in various other communities around the state for teaching. They lived a wonderful life together for 42 years.
Bob filled many roles as a grandfather, father, uncle, coach, mentor, confidant, volunteer, hunter, and drum keeper for the Soaring Eagle drum group. Recently, he had been drumming with his group at the Fairbanks Correctional Center to work with inmates as part of an effort to provide activities in hopes of rehabilitation.
He touched so many lives throughout Alaska and had a special love for young people. He saw no color in people and treated everyone equally. He adopted the Native American views and religion and was deeply spiritual. His wife would say, "I swear he was a Native American in a past life."
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Irene Maguire; brothers, James and Larry Maguire, two infant siblings, and niece Karen Stamps of Chelan, Wash.; mother-in-law Bertha Moses; in-laws, Bertha Sherrie Moses, Johnson Moses Jr., Norman Beatus, and Dan Bailiff.
He is survived by the love of his life Cora (Moses) Maguire; daughters, Jennifer Maguire, Gail and husband Jeremiah Vanderpool, and son, Jeremy Maguire; his sisters, Doris Jean and husband Jim Stamps and Mary Bailiff; his beloved granddaughters, Navonne Benally, Jazlin Vanderpool and Aralin Vanderpool; father-in-law Johnson Moses; brothers-in-law, Bergman Moses, Rudy Moses, Ross and Shirley Ann Moses; sisters-in-law, Virginia and Stan Ned, Kathy and Morris Moses, Barbara Beatus, Brenda and John, Sr. Erlich, and Shirley Mae Moses.
He also is survived by the following nieces and nephews in the Lower 48: Jeff, Chris, Peter, Gary, Joe, and Pat Maguire; Steve Stamps, Linda (Stamps) Reister; Sue, Mike, Tom, David, Kerry, and Ruth Anne Bailiff; and sisters-in-law, Anita and Jan Maguire, as well as, nieces and nephews in Alaska: Peter, Jason, Greg, Christy, Martha, Jack, John, Timothy, Bobby, Alan, Melissa, Mandy, Jody, Tanya, Jessica, Cherise, Genevie, Stotlin, Lavonne, Conrad, Kaitlin, John Jr., Alex, Cheryl, Brittany, Reanna, Amy, Hailey, Alana, and Lila.
We were lucky to have had such a special person in our lives and will miss him dearly. We take comfort knowing he has started a new and everlasting life with the Great Creator.
A fundraiser will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today, March 18, 2011 at the Chief Peter John Tribal Hall.
Viewing will begin at 11 a.m. with a memorial service starting at noon Saturday, March 19, 2011, at Chief Peter John Tribal Hall. A potlatch will follow at 5 p.m.

As just a young pupster I arrived in Alaska in 1983 with a head full of dreams and a desire to teach in rural Alaska. Thank goodness for people like Bob and Cora who imbued me with an awareness and appreciation of multicultural education. They lived what they taught.

Bob's and my paths crossed in unexpected ways over the intervening years. Always it was a pleasure to visit. Always I left feeling better about life, because Bob continued to model for me how to live and love fully.

Cora and family, I am greatly saddened to hear of his passing. I am so willing to hold a portion of your grief in my own heart in the hopes it help you to transition through difficult days.

I was very sad to learn about Bob's passing. Though I hadn't seen Bob or Cora in some time I have warm memories of them after returning from teaching in Kaltag and living in their cabin on Murphy Dome Road for two years. Being there was comforting and I felt Bob and Cora's presence in the beautiful octagonal log structure they built. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go to Cora and the families. My you find peace in the sadness, knowing that so much of Bob's love of life made such big impressions on so many people.

We will miss our brother Bob who helped sister Cora care for us in our younger years at Steamboat. Those are my fondest memories. Life was so good at camp. Bob keep us busy with traditional native games. I will miss his happy greetings when I call. Bob will be so missed when we visit Fairbanks. He was always grilling or cooking and visiting with friends and family. Bob will forever be in our hearts.
My love and prayers are with our sister Cora and family and Bob's family in Washington.
Aana baase' to his friends and faimily in Fairbanks for raising funds for our sister and for putting on a wonderful service and potlatch.

I would like to say thanks to all the wonderful people who came out to support my sister and her family during their hard time after Bob's passing. It was a long week and it was made longer by the thought that we would not hear Bobs voice again when we went to visit him and my sis. Bob was a wonderful father and a great guy to have grown up with. His sense of humor was awesome and he was always willing to sit down and talk about one of his passions which was basketball. I will miss seeing him in his spot up at the Patty with my sis by his side, cheering on the Nooks. I just wanted to say that I will miss Bob and thanks for the many people who helped out and who are praying for my sister and her family. Baasee'

My most sincere condolences to Cora and the entire Maguire and Moses families. It was my honor to work with Cora's parents and others from their extended in family in the mid-1980s while preparing the conservation plan for Kanuti National Wildlife Refuge. My Mom came from Minnesota to take a memorable field trip on the Koyukuk and Kanuti rivers with Cora's dad, Johnson. We were warmly received by the Moses family in Allakaket. My mother treasured this glimpse into my work and the wonderful people who had opened their homes and hearts to me.

Bob Maguire was one of a kind. He was an awesome dude, and will be greatly missed. He always had encouraging words, and a joke or two. He made you feel included, even if he just met you. I was so sad to hear of his passing. Many hugs to the Maguire family. Thanks for sharing your husband, father and grandfather with us, he was amazing.

My family and I were saddened to hear of the passing of Bob. He was my sons teacher in McGrath and they have fond memories of him. Walter spent some time with the Maguire family in McG and he was always grateful for the wonderful treatment he received. I had many visits with Bob and always enjoyed the stories we shared. Our Minto trip with other Native educators was great and I'm glad that I got to know Bob and Cora as friends. May he rest in peace and we offer prayers and thoughts to the family. The Bob I knew was committed, to Cora, his children, his grandchildren and the rich and varied community he gathered around him. The Bob I knew was solid, present, aware...Our friendship was special and unique to me and, I suspect, that everyone who knew him felt the same way...Bob enriched our lives...I will miss his insight, his compassion, his stories and his humour...Our world was enlarged by his presence and has been diminished with his passing.

My sincere condolences to Cora, Bob and Cora's children and grandchildren. I knew he was a "one-off design" when we first met him in Hughes in '66. He was a young bush teacher, so enthusiastic about his profession and his experiences in the wilds of the Interior. I remember his excitement when he and Cora were married. Visiting them and flying/hiking with them into Arctic lakes were some of my very best Alaska days memories. His passion for teaching has been an inspiration to me in my own career.

Bob will be missed by many. Each day since his passing, when I click on the Get Mail button and there is no message from Bob there is a pang in my heart. Bob did the work he needed to do while he was with us and I trust that his spirit will soar far and wide. To Cora and his family my deepest heartfelt sympathy for your loss. For his friends, I know Bob reached deep into your hearts and minds. May we follow his path of service, appreciation for the natural world and reverence for All Our Relations.

Bobby (as I knew him) was two years ahead of me in school in Chelan and was buddies with my brother David. He was always as his Alaska friends knew him -- kind, humble, intelligent and very funny. And of course he grew up loving the outdoors. My brother recalls him being late for school one day and finding out later when they went to their lockers that Bobby had stopped on the way to school to bag a deer! His gun and bloody clothes were in the locker and the gutted deer was tucked away in the hills to be picked up on the way home.

The honored and respected man he grew to become in Alaska is a mature reflection of the inventive and irreverent kid I knew growing up in Chelan.

Our prayers are with his family and many friends as they struggle with their loss. He'll have a warm place in our hearts, and thoughts of him will always bring a smile and that nod of satisfaction that comes from knowing someone who really believed his purpose in life was to make it better for others. His life was an inspiration that will touch people for many generations to come. That's a legacy that no amount of money could every buy.

What a wonderful man Bob was--- kind, loving, simple, self-effacing. He gave so much of himself to others, his family, friends, and community. He walked the high road always and earned the respect of everybody who knew him.
My heart goes out to Cora and the family and to his many friends. We all will miss him dearly.

Bob lived his convictions and paid the price for what he believed: a man of great conviction, integrity, a gifted teacher and a genuine friend, one who lived in both cultures and did all he could to help, wherever. A rare soul whom I deeply respected and am grateful to. His humor and relaxation in life was always a balm to others. I am so sorry, Cora. I am so grateful for both your lives. Judy Ferguson

Bob was a great teacher in Iditarod Area School District, and a wonderful basketball coach. He was such a thoughtful, kindhearted person, and always had good things to say. Always a loving husband to Cora, and a great dad to Jennifer, Gail, and Jeremy. After retiring as a teacher Bob worked for the elder program Denakanaaga, and then was the Learning Styles Director for the Association of Interior Native Educators. He was a great supporter and advocate for Native people. He and the others in "Soaring Eagles" could be found at the Alaska Native Education potlucks drumming and singing or around the community volunteering his time. He always asked how my family members were doing. He gave tirelessly of himself, and was so proud of his grandkids. He touched so many people, and we all mourn with the family. Prayers and hugs to your family Cora! Love ya Bob!

Our condolences to Bobs family- how you must miss him already.

I regret that I did not take the opportunity to know this man better- I always enjoyed our conversations, and wish there had been more.
He taught my love, Debbie, that she has a voice she was not aware of before (hope she doesn't mind me telling). How many more lives are better from his guidance- I'm sure they are everywhere he has been.

We first met Bob at our children's; ( Jeremy and our daughter Christine) , college graduation & reception which they celebrated together. Bob stayed late to make sure his son and guests were out and home safely attending each detail. His spirit was love and his compassion and pride for his son and family was strong and unending. An honor to meet Bob. May his light continue to shine in his loved ones. God Bless with his care.

Well there he was up there on the Koyukuk River with that giant but mischievous grin; even then in 66 with an attitude and dreams. And just two weeks ago in the lumber store talking about life, the planet, but as others here have pointed out foremost about family. I feel so privileged to have known him and to have been able to call him friend. By his early passing he teaches all of us still here to be better to each other and to ourselves now, today tomorrow and for every day the rest of our lives; to be patient and forgiving. Teaching to the end. Doing what he was born to do. That's my Bob. One of a kind and gone now. Farewell my friend.
