Augusta Bayonne Obituary

BAYONNE Augusta Hicks Bayonne passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, June 23, 2011. Gussie, as she was known to many, was born in Fullerton, LA on November 28, 1920, oldest of eight children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nace Hicks Sr. and Willie Estes Hicks. Beloved wife of the late Harold F. Bayonne, Sr. Mother of Patricia Bayonne Johnson (Gerald), Jacqueline Bayonne, Annette Rodgers, Carol Bayonne and the late Harold Bayonne, Jr. Sister of Wilma Hicks, Marion Vaughn (Marshall), Gladys Butler, Nace Hicks, Jr. (Cindy), Robertine Charles, Dr. Onita Estes-Hicks and Elois Brown (Andrew). Grandmother of Scott Carriere, Harold Bayonne III (Tracee), Dana Johnson, Alexander Stross (Brittany), Simone Norah, Marcus Rodgers, Ingrid Norah, Carla Rodgers, Karena Stross and ten great-grandchildren. Aunt of Linda Elwood, Rev. Lionel Baker, Jr. (Petrie), Rev. Leroy Baker (Deshrea), Brenda Daggs, Michael Brown, Karen McCoy, Michael Hicks (Terri), Gregory Hicks, Donna Hicks, Lisa Campbell (Michael), Rhonda Hicks, David Nace, Kalea Hicks, Camilla Johnson, Odistine Hargrove, Samuel Johnson, Bernard Johnson, the late Lawrence Baker, the late Keith McCoy and a host of great nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Leola Lee, family friend and caregiver. Augusta was enrolled in St. Monica Catholic School and was a member of the first graduation class in 1934. There she met Mother Katharine Drexel and was selected to read her composition, "Building for Eternity". As an 80th birthday gift from her sister Onita, she traveled to Rome and witnessed the canonization of Mother Katharine Drexel. She attended Xavier Prep, Xavier University and Southern University. She taught at Washington Elementary and later worked at the Dorothy B. Watson Community Center and retired after 18 years of service. Relatives and friends of the family, Rev, Richard Miles and parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, St. Katherine Drexel Court 59, Dorothy B. Watson Community Center, Internal Revenue Service, New Orleans Public Library, New Orleans Public Schools, Family Home Care and Guardian Angels Hospice are invited to the Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, 4230 S. Broad St., New Orleans, LA 70125. Father Asare-Dankwah, celebrant. Visitation at 9:00 a.m. Interment: Providence Memorial Park, Metairie, LA. Richardson Funeral Home of Jefferson in charge of arrangements.
