THORNTON Brother Mark Thornton, S.C. January 23, 1916 - February 14, 2013 Brother Mark Thornton, S.C. (Joseph C. Thornton), a Brother of the Sacred Heart, passed away in Baton Rouge, LA on Thursday, February 14, 2013, at the age of 97. He was a native of Far Rockaway, NY, and the beloved son of the late Elizabeth Reilly and Luke Thornton, Sr. Bro. Mark is preceded in death by brothers, Luke Thornton, Jr. and John Thornton and his sister, Marcella Klinck. He is survived by his nieces, Kathleen Lunamand and Karen Klinck, his nephews, Chris Klinck and Robert Klinck, and a host of great-nieces and great-nephews. Bro. Mark entered the Brothers of the Sacred Heart at Metuchen, NJ, in 1928. He started his career in education as a teacher at Menard Memorial Catholic High School, Alexandria, LA, in 1934. Three short years later, he was transferred to Catholic Boys Home, in Mobile, AL, where he added prefecting duties to his teaching responsibilities. Bro. Mark was later assigned to St. Aloysius H.S. in New Orleans, LA, in 1939 where he devoted the next ten years to classroom instruction. But, he moved into the principal's office at St. Aloysius in 1949 and spent the better part of his remaining 48 years of ministry as a school administrator. Bro. Mark served as principal at St. Aloysius H.S. (New Orleans, LA), McGill H.S. (Mobile, AL), St. Aloysius High School (Vicksburg, MS), and was the founding principal of Brother Martin High School (New Orleans, LA). He was elected Provincial Superior of the New Orleans Province of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart for two terms, from 1970 through 1976. He later served as president of St. Stanislaus College (Bay St. Louis, MS). Bro. Mark also enjoyed teaching at the Brothers' Bayou schools, E.D. White Catholic H.S. and Vandebilt Catholic H.S. Before retiring, Bro. Mark was named treasurer of the New Orleans Province. Throughout his life, Bro. Mark was known for his humble leadership, his practical wisdom, his love of God and his religious community, and his selfless dedication to the young people entrusted to his care. His keen wit, insight into complex situations and financial acumen, especially evident at the untold number of meetings he attended, were legendary. Since Bro. Mark donated his body to medical science, relatives, friends, colleagues and former students are invited to attend a memorial Mass commemorating his earthly life and celebrating his new, eternal life on Friday, February 22, 2013, at 4:00 PM in the Branton Chapel at Brother Martin H.S. (4401 Elysian Fields Ave., New Orleans, LA, 70122). A light reception will follow in the lobby of the Meyer Math and Science Building at Brother Martin H.S. In lieu of flowers donations are preferred to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Foundation, 4600 Elysian Fields Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70122. Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis, MS.

"Beware the Wrath of a Patient Man" Brother Mark taught us this through example, and I will never forget it and actually have used it myself, with the demands of leadership. I will never forget the leadership Brother Mark demonstrated to me and the other students. What a great man! Rest in Peace, Brother Mark and THANK YOU! Brother Martin Charter Class, 1970

I graduated in 1949 when Brother Mark became Principle. He was also Principle when My sons were there and they graduated from Brother Martin when he was Principle. I was fortunate enough to be in touch with him through the years. Since Hurricane Katrina I have lived in Baton Rouge and was able to visit with him several times at the Brothers Retirement Home at Catholic High. He truly left me with a deep respect for the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

Brother Mark was my freshman home room teacher. He was a great teacher and an excellent, but gentle, disciplinarian. He,and Bro. Nicholas, are the last of my St. Aloysius high school teachers. I shall never forget him. Judge Philip Ciaccio

Brother Mark had a presence that's not forgotten..after all these years. He set the tone for discipline at St. Aloysius (Vicksburg)...and it was a fair discipline and he kept it toned.

On behalf of myself and my classmates from the class of 1955, I would like Brother's family to know that Brother Mark's patient, firm but always fair leadership at McGill influenced all of us and his principles have guided us throughout our lives. We will always remember him.

Brother Mark Thornton, S. C., who died on Valentines Day was principal at St. Aloysius High School in Vicksburg, MS, when I was a senior (1965) and also taught us English 4. I want to share a memory of him that has stayed all these years. St. Al at that time was an all boys school. In the second half of our second semester, we were getting a little rowdy and ready to move on. Our English 4 class was immediately after lunch. One day we must have been really rowdy. When we entered his classroom, all the blackboard were clean except one.

He had written, "Beware the wrath of a patient man."

You could hear a pin drop. He had no more problems with us for the rest of the semester. God rest his soul. The other day a cousin of mine told me God calls his favorite souls to Him on Valentines Day. May his soul and the souls of all the faithfully departed rest in peace. Amen.

Thank you, Brother Mark, for all you did for me. Will always remember you as our principal and teacher at St. Aloysius in Vicksburg.

How lucky I and all those at Saint Al were to have had you Brother, I think back often to the great lessons often laced with your wonderful brand of humor that you imparted to us. Rest in peace Brother you certainly have been an example for us all to follow.

God bless you, Brother Mark. I will always cherish my memories of you at the helm of St. Aloysius HS in Vicksburg, MS. We capricious students never knew how you did it, but you managed to be everywhere, benevolently watching and guiding us throughout the school day (and never, never letting us get away with any of our mischief). A finer person, I have rarely encountered.
Rest in peace, dear mentor.
