MARENGO – Gary Lynn Carter was born Dec. 7, 1937, in Mount Clemens, Mich., and died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, peacefully in his home surrounded by his children after a long illness. Gary was a devoted husband and father.
Gary met Carol Grace Beyer in Mount Clemens, where on June 25, 1960, the couple married and spent the next 53 years together. Carol Grace passed away one day prior to Gary, only one short day apart. Today, they are in paradise where they will be together forever.
Gary and Carol raised three children, Brian (Holly) Carter of Elgin, Wendy (Mary Beth) Carter-Siddons of McHenry and Kevin J. Carter of Rockford.
Gary had an impressive career with General Motors in Warren, Mich., where he worked as a metallurgist at GM's research and development facility. In 1977, Gary relocated to Illinois where he worked as training manager for AFS (American Foundry Society). In 1985, Gary accepted a position as training and safety manager for the Department of Energy (EE&G) in Blackfoot, Idaho. While in Illinois, Gary was an active supporter of the Crystal Lake Heraldry Guard and a very active member and instructor for the American Red Cross water safety programs.
Gary loved all things adventurous, the mountains, the outdoors, great food and restaurants. He was an accomplished wood carver, photographer, gardener and cook. His greatest love of all, however, was his wife Carol of 53 years and his children and family.
There will be a memorial service from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at Colonial Funeral Home, 591 Ridgeview Drive, McHenry. There also will be a memorial service in Mount Clemens, Mich., that will be scheduled over the next few weeks.

So sorry to hear about Gary and Carol. He was a good friend earlier in my career. I was responsible for bringing him to Illinois and he did a great job at AFS/CMI. Sorry to hear you are gone, Gary, but I am glad you had a wonderful life.
