Allen Barkey Obituary

1929 - 2011
Allen Barkey died on September 24, 2011 on Longboat Key, Florida, where he resided with his beloved wife Henrietta.

Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Allen emigrated to the United States at the age of 17, settling in New York City with his parents Isaac and Caroline and sister Viviane. An alumnus of the Lycée Saint Michel, a graduate of Manhattan College and a U.S. Army veteran, Allen spent most of his career in international trade. Together with Henrietta, he ran Barkey Importing Company, which, notably, introduced Turkish apricots to the U.S. market.

Allen was the proud and loving father of two boys, whom he raised with Henrietta, the light of his life, in New Rochelle, NY. And he delighted in the hugs of his two young granddaughters, who called him "Papa".

Fluent in five languages, Allen was a traveler, a raconteur and a loyal friend to many. He was also an opera buff, an avid reader of history and a life-long student. Swimming in the ocean was his favorite outdoor pastime, and he continued to ride his three-wheel recumbent until his last days.

Survived by his wife of 48 years, Henrietta, his sister Viviane, his sons Jonathan and David, his daughter-in-law Lauren, and his granddaughters Cara and Chloe, he will be forever missed.

A Memorial Service will be held at John J. Fox Funeral Home in Larchmont, NY, Tuesday September, 27 at 12 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Epilepsy Foundation.

Dear Henrietta, David and Jonathan. Amazing and wonderful how the years pour back after more than twenty apart. We had some good times, and we know that Allen was cherished in his own household. Our condolences at this awful time. Love, Linda and Steve Kates

Dear Barkey Family,
Loosing a loved one is the most difficult thing in the world to survive...Hugh and I send our love and our condolences. We hope with time the wonderful memories of good times will over shadow the sadness you feel in your hearts today.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.

It was my great privilege and honor to have been Allen's creative writing "teacher" at the Lifelong Learning Academy in Sarasota. To say that I learned more from him than he from me would be an understatment. What a wonderful and interesting man...even though he occasionaly chaffed at our twenty minute time-limit in class for reading and critiquing his work. He had so much to tell us...so much history...so much delight in describing the not-always-easy life's journey he had carved out for himself. He will be missed, but certaily not forgotten. What a remarkable man!

Dear Henrietta,

It has been such a shock to know I will not see Allen coming and going from class to class as he loved to learn anything he could at the Lifelong Learning Academy. He was such an example of steadfast determination after experiencing his stroke two years ago. Honestly, I had a great deal of admiration for him. He spoke spanish with me quite a bit and I really enjoyed our conversations. Allen had great wisdom of the world and he spoke so often of his love - Henrietta. Take good care of yourself and enjoy all your fond memories of him. My condolences. Maria Hussey
