I guess I was as close as any friend to Allen during our teen years. We went girl hunting together and I found my wife and Allen a girlfriend at the time. I lost touch with him and there are many unanswered questions. Alan went his own way and when I reached out to him in the mid 80's and the mid nineties our contacts only raised more questions.
I'm not surprised to read the many tributes for Allen and I'm not surprised about his achievements as lofty as they were.
I miss Allen even though it's been many years since we last spoke. He embodied a youthful charm and an adults sense of responsibility. He was a mench at the age of 12. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who thinks they can fill in the gaps for me. [email protected]
Goodbye good friend.

Dear Mark and Mindy,
Allen's passing came as such a shock. Just finding this today after being out of touch for awhile. Although we only met that one time at the Open, I feel as though I got to know both of you through Allen. I sit here so many months later at such a loss. Your family was his family. I pray that you have found peace and I know that your memories are cherished. I am so deeply sorry. I feel blessed to have had the wonderful, kind, caring Allen in my life.

I just heard the news and cannot express how sad my heart is. I knew Allen back in the late 80's when we met at the NASCAR events in Daytona Beach, FL sponsored by RUSA. Allen was a gentleman and super nice human being and will be missed by all of us.

To Allen's mother Ruth and his sister Laura and her family,

Allen was a great person and a tremendous success story. From the day my mother invited him to our house, I knew we would be friends forever. He was very special to my family-always praised the business lessons he learned from my father and he never forgot special occasions like Mrs. S's birthday and mothers day.
He will be sorely missed.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of you.

A few years ago, while on an annual charity bike ride in Israel, Allen asked me to visit Nalaga'at in Yafo near Tel Aviv. Nalaga'at is an organization that employs blind, deaf and speech deprived people in two restaurants and a live theatre. The waiters in one restaurant are blind and dinner is served in total darkness. The waiters in the lighted restaurant are deaf. The actors are deaf and blind, often because of a genetic disorder called Usher syndrome, which results in acute deafness at birth, followed by gradual loss of vision. As a result, most are non-verbal, communicating only through touch. Yet they still manage to make extraordinary theatre. He remarked, "visit, you will be my eyes and ears."

I visited and caught the tail end of a show presented in the theatre entitled "Not By Bread Alone" followed by dinner in the lighted theatre with the executive director, Adina Tal. The show is internationally acclaimed and recently played in London. It was a defining moment for me and I highly recommend it for all.

By the way - Allen built that theatre and participated in many other philanthropic endeavors - all very quietly, without fanfare. That was the Allen I knew and admired. While I mourn his loss, I celebrate his life of achievement and generosity.
