Albert Portis Obituary

Albert V. Portis, 87, of Canal Fulton, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, February 19, 2012 at Rose Lane Nursing Home after a six-month illness.

He leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Nila (Pence) Portis; his daughter, Cindy Galloway and daughter and son-in-law, Tami and Brian Benton. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nila Jean Burke and grandson, Chad Allen Burke.

Born in Graham, Virginia on June 21, 1924, his family then moved to Akron, Ohio where he lived most his life. As a young man he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon returning home he became a truck driver and then later found his expertise as an electrician. He co-owned West Port Electric then started Portis Electric in 1968, retiring in 1981 when he passed the business on to family, Dave Galloway. Al was a member of IBEW Local Union 306 for 60 years. He was a devoted member of Temple Baptist Church where he sang in the choir and dedicated his time to visitation. Al was an avid gardener who bestowed a countless amount of vegetables to family and friends. He and his wife enjoyed wintering in Florida for many years.

Al was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather. His love of God, Family and Music is a legacy that has been passed onto his beloved family.

In addition to his wife and children he will be greatly missed by eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grand-children.

Al will be remembered as a faithful servant of the Lord, who enjoyed spending his time with family, friends and extended church family. He'd never turn down a waltz or polka with his daughters, granddaughters or anyone for that matter. The last one at the dinner table, where every meal was the best he ever had, strumming guitar and singing precious melodies to family members, lazy afternoon naps, and old stories of new cars, army days, and the years growing up with his siblings are memories we'll all hold dear to our hearts. He was a kind, loving man who will be missed by many. He cared for his wife with a passion only true love could reveal. God Bless his soul.

A Memorial Service will be held SATURDAY, 11 a.m. at the Swigart-Easterling Funeral Home, 624 E. Cherry St. (Rt. 93, Canal Fulton), with Rev. Glenn Rogers, Jr. officiating and where friends may call SATURDAY from 10 a.m. until time of the service. Inurnment at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Akron. Tami, Cindy and Family,

My sincere condolences to you and your family during this difficult time. I have so many memories of your Dad growing up, he was an amazing loving man that always found the good in everyone. I remember church (always special), Lake Milton, cars, motorcycles, music, and the absolute love of his family and friends. He certainly was the "Rock" of the family, and deeply loved Nila, adored his children, grand and great grand children. He was funny, loving, and always had a story, "truth be told", he will be cherished and greatly missed.
May you cherish and hold in your heart memories that will remain with you always.

Our sympathy to all the Portis family in your great loss. I am sitting here thinking about the great times we had for so many years. The Florida vacations, the fishing trips, the church bus we drove for 13 years at Akron Baptist Temple, the great times at Berlin Dam, and the great meals we shared over the years. Al was a wonderful friend and buddy and a true Christian at all times. I will see you later Al

Dear Cindy and all the family - Your dad was a great guy! I remember a time when you, Tami, and I were sitting around with your dad. He was playing the guitar and we were singing hymns! And he sure could dance! This picture of Al in his army uniform is a great one - I can certainly understand how your mom was just swept off her feet by this handsome young man. I am so sorry for your loss. You will miss him dearly. Hold fast to your wonderful memories and tell the stories often. It will help to get you through this. I love you and yours -

I was saddened to read of your father (and father-in-law's) passing. From the obit, it's evident that he lived a full and Godly life. I know he'll rejoice in spending his first Easter in Heaven. My prayers are with you and each member of your family during your time of sorrow.
