To the family of "Ms. Whitmore" (that's what I called her). I cannot tell you how sorry I was to hear of her departure. In her own special way, she allowed me to appreciate the power of radio, which I grew to love. Please know that she was truly loved and appreciated. -- HIU Class of 1990

Evonne Whitmore is the reason I am where I am. She encouraged me when I needed to be encouraged but also pushed me when I needed to be pushed. But the best thing she did for me, was believe in me.

To the Family of Dr. Evonne Whitmore:
Please know that you have my deepest sympathy. You all are in my thoughts and prayers. I am a staff member in Career Services at Kent State University and remember fondly those occasions when I presented (at Dr. Whitmore's request) on Resume & Cover Letter Writing for the Journalism students she advised. She was very student centered and wanted her students to be prepared for the real world. Dr. Whitmore will be greatly missed. God bless you all during this most difficult time.

I am so sad to hear this. Dr. Whitmore was one of my instructors when I was a freshman at Norfolk State in 1977. I was impressed how she taught her class, how she spoke and how she carried herself. She meant business and we youngsters knew it. She was serious about educating us. I saw her a few years later at a journalism conference at Howard University. She gave me a big hug and congratulated me on my success. I will remember that warm smile and her words of encouragement. She was proud of her students. May God bless her family at this difficult time.

Arthur, Kinney, Lauren & Other Family Members,

Evonne was a loving wife, a dedicated Mother, a skilled, committed imparter of knowledge… whether in the classroom or in life…and a true friend. I first met her at Norfolk State University in the early 70’s as student workers in the Political Science Department. Even then she had her own style and a special way of impacting people. Years later as we both worked at Norfolk State, she was an outspoken advocate for the education of all people, an influencer toward action, and a people person; it is apparent that she continued in that vein throughout her life. What a remarkable woman, truly she has left her mark on the world!

Our bond formed early and continued through college, our courtships, marriages, multiple jobs, two children each, over 35 years of marital bliss, relocations and it will withstand this latest chapter as she transcends into the presence of the “Holiest of Holies’. We lift your family before the Most High, pray your strength in the Lord and seek His wisdom and guidance as you withstand this tremendous loss. I think the scholarship honoring Evonne is a wonderful way for us all to continue to demonstrate our love for her and trust that many people will make contributions, not only this year, but for years to come. We intend to do so. May God richly bless you, He already loves you! And please know that we do too!

To the Whitmore Family:

I am saddened to hear of the passing of a "wonderful encourager."

Dr. Whitmore or "Von" as she instructed me to call her, always had a word of encouragement and challenge. She gladly lent her expertise when and where she could.

I particularly remember her willingness to facilitate a writing workshop for a college access program. Needless to say those who attended wanted to know when could "she" come back! Her enthusiasm was just that contagious.

I am confident and certain that her quest to remain a life long learner and teacher will live on.

My sincerest prayers are with you and your family.

Lovingly submitted, Rev. Diane Lewis

My sincere condolences to the Whitmore family. Dr. Whitmore was my professor at Norfolk State University. She was also my sister's best friend. Dr. Whitmore let me know that because of their relationship, she was going to make sure I earned my grade and that I would be the absolute best that I could be. I thank god for allowing me to be her student. She helped me reached heights that I did not know that I could. I use what she taught me to this very day. Dr. Whitmore was the quintessential professional with a kind heart and I am blessed to have known her. May she rest in peace and her family and friends be comforted in this great loss.

I'm so glad I had the opportunity to sit in her classroom at Hampton University. She was a no-nonsense, make you want to give 1000% to everything you turned into her kind of Professor. I lived for her approval. You couldn't fake it with her. You had to know your stuff. I loved her tough love approach. I remember asking her why she was so tough on us and her response was "You think I'm tough, try life!" Never have truer words been spoken.

After I began teaching, I shared wiith her my appreciation for all she did to shape the educator I've become. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery, If she saw me in action, I hope she'd be flattered...& proud!

To her family, may your cherished memories and the kind words from others help you through this difficult time.

I extend my heartfelt prayers and sympathy to the Whitmore family. I first knew Dr. Whitmore watching her report for WVEC, then was fortunate enough to have her as my professor at Hampton. To this day I still appreciate the knowledge she instilled, not just of the media but about how to make it in the world. Her love shown to us was tough, yet inspiring. She will be sorely missed.

May you rest in peace Mrs. Whitmore. I was fortunate enough to have been one among the first group of students at Hampton University when you came there to teach. I was also among the first group of students that were coached by you at WHOV-FM. You taught me so many valuable lessons that I've used througout my 25+ year career in radio broadcasting. I've even managed to own an online radio station now. You were a great teacher, mentor, and friend. May your family take comfort in knowing that you are now with the Lord and that you'll always remain in the hearts of so many of your students. Thanks again Professor!!

To Brother Whitmore, and Family;
May you find peace in knowing that our prayers are with you. May God strengthen you during this difficult time. Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4.

During these difficult days it is comforting to know that God can help you to endure any problem or the challenges that you will face in days to come. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of tender mercies and the God of all comfort.” You and your family are in my prayers during this difficult time.

Dr. Von:

I have so many things to thank you for. First, your Media Ethics class that lit a passion for learning in me. Second, the time you spent to counsel and encourage me as I chose a program and proceeded in the direction of my dreams. Third, your leadership and the excellence you showed in the classroom encourage me to be just like you.

I enjoyed every moment of that class and always knew that I could count on wise counsel delivered with common sense every time I asked you a question.

To Dr. Von's family, I wish the peace of knowing that the wife and mother you shared with all of us was truly a wonderful person. Her unfailing faithfulness to her work and her craft and the high standards she set for herself in all her efforts will not be forgotten. Take comfort in her love and the expression of that love in everyday life. It will be remembering those everyday moments that will give you peace and strength in life's difficulties. She will be there with you.

And Dr. Von, we never got to that cup of coffee this summer, but we'll meet again down the road and I'm sure that coffee cup won't run dry.

Please accept my condolences on the loss of your loving wife and mother Yvonne. I am very sad to have learned of her passing and regret that I cannot attend visiting or services as we are currently out of the country.
