Ann Pierce Obituary

Pierce, Ann Jardine 86 11/06/1924 01/29/2011 Ann Jardine was born Nov. 6, 1924, in Great Falls, Mont., and grew up in a time when backyard gate markings indi-cated that Ann's family would help a fellow out with a warm meal. Ann left Great Falls after high school and attended, and later graduated from, Colorado Women's College in Denver. After a day of studies, Ann would take a long streetcar ride out to a dirt runway at the edge of town for flying lessons. She obtained her pilot's license at age 19. Adventure beckoned again when Ann headed to Palo Alto, Calif., and Stanford University at her sister Shirley's insistence. A part-time job "for good money" became full-time, and Ann divided her time between a lively college experience with Shirley, and bringing home a paycheck. Ann met the love of her life, Lawrence "Lonnie" Pierce, who wooed Ann even though she was "pinned" to one of his fraternity brothers. The romance deepened, and in 1950, Lonnie and Ann were married. Soon after, Lonnie accepted a position in the insurance business in Portland, and the young couple moved to Lake Oswego. Ann raised three children and enjoyed an active and happy life with Lonnie until his untimely death in 1983. Ann supported Lonnie's philanthropy and active community involvement. She was a member of the Oregon Symphony Women's Board, served on the Women's Board of OMSI, was president of the Women's Convalescent Home Foundation Association and was president of the Portland Women's Union Board. Ann remained close to her family in Lake Oswego, doting over daughter, Jennifer Pierce Zahniser and her husband, Jim; sons, Chris Pierce and his wife, Ann; and Lawrence "Chip" Pierce and his wife, Christianna. She saw absolutely no flaws in her grandchildren, Lawrence "Lee" and Theodore "Tad" Pierce; and Rich, Anni, Jimmy and Jane Zahniser. In addition to her children and grandchildren, Ann is survived by her "little sister," Shirley Jacobsen of Great Falls; and dear sisters-in-law, Marian Slade of Portland and Tricia Layden of Seattle. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, Ann lived with her daughter and son-in-law for 18 months and most recently resided comfortably at The Stafford in Lake Oswego. Ann maintained a sweet graciousness and good humor her entire life. She died of heart failure Jan. 29, 2011. Ann's family is deeply grateful to the staff at The Stafford assisted living facility for the compassionate care of Ann in her final months. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Ann's memory be sent to Glenfair Elementary School (where her son Chris teaches), in care of Chris Pierce, 4334 N.E. 32nd Place, Portland, OR 97211.

I heard of Ann's passing today and want to extend my sympathies to the family. Ann and I were Tennis partners at Mountain Park, Ann was tall and i was short, we made a great team. We also played a lot of Bridge together. The years flew by and we moved a lot, but I always thought of her and tried to keep in touch. She was a wonderful and delightful friend. Now she and Lonnie can get together again . She will be missed. My prayers go out to your family. Know she was loved by all her friends. Lois Fisher in Eugene

I am sending my prayers for you all in the loss of your dear mother. I knew Ann from times at the beach where we both
had a home, lunches at the Town Club, but mostly at Waverley. She was the first person I played with in the ladies group; I was so nervous, but she said, "remember, this just a game, so kick the ball if you don't like your lie".
What a great friend she was. It was a priviledge to know her. Adrienne Tromley, Lake Oswego

I will always remember your mom as one of the most gracious and kind mothers of the Lake Oswego teen gang. So many fun times at your house, where she watched out for us during our stupid antics, but from a distance, never with judgement. If she got mad, it must have been after we left, because all I remember is her great smile and laugh. I'm sure she's smiling down from heaven with 'Tiger', so proud of the family she raised.
